Over a MILLION people a year die from those 3 things. According to NASA we should stop doing all three of those things because they are too dangerous.

No, there won't! That's the point. Hubble's replacement is scheduled for 2012 and it sees in infrared. Hubble uses visible light spectrum. There is no scheduled replacement for hubble. We can not afford to lose Hubble! I'm outraged, let's just spend 10 Billion USD on football because apparently people care more about that than learning about our universe.

These safety issues are just plain silly. It's the same thing as to why we are allowing our privacy and dignity to be invaded when taking a plane somewhere. The columbia crash sucks, yes, but when did a couple of human deaths ever stop human invention. There are still 6 billion people on this planet I don't think we should stop our science because a couple people died. The next telescope to be put in space won't happen until 2012 and it can't even see the same spectrum that hubble can. The new one is going to be infrared, hubble on the other hand uses human visible spectrum. This is a loss that can't be imagined. Stop playing your silly little games NASA and let us use hubble!

I agree with you on this one. The dot-bubble is the cause for all of this. People saw money in this field and ran for a job. Now that they have been laid-off they still think they can make money in this field because of their experience. That doesn't leave much room for us, the people who have been working on computers since before we could read. I worked on a computer before I watched television. People like me are the ones pining for the jobs because we deserve them. And yes, I do make shit for money so I am most definatly working for the love and NOT the money.

  14. Re:dropped carrier on Cable Modem Hackers Release Improved Firmware · · Score: 1

8 years ago or so when I first got my cable modem it was quite easy to hack the modems. Most of them had exposed serial ports to plug into. Some providers back in the day left access to their control matrix on the network. All I needed was the user/pass which was the same for all workers. A quick keyboard logger and a service call later and I have root access on the network. Then when DOCSIS 1.0 came out all you had to do was build a linux box and a BOOTP server and uncapped modem again. Then DOCSIS 1.1 came out and changed all that. Now uncapped cable modems last all of about 1 min when the new script gets sent to the modem. If you want fast internet, either get a job at a very rich company or go to school.

I'll have to say that with all the draconian rules being put in place with cable providers that I don't see this as being a new playground for crackers. You'll likely get dropped quicker than you can refresh the BIOS on that cable modem of yours. With DOCSIS compliant cable modems you'll be sure to know that the cable modem company DOES know what you're doing with it.
