apparently people feel that it is ok to bootleg software for learning purposes. basically they do stuff like this with it: pet projects until they get good enough with the technology to the point where they can land a job in the field. then they will be able to get their employers to spring the cash for a real valid license. i wonder if anyone has checked mister belmonte's shelves for license agreements?

but seriously, at 24 i understand your doubt that he would have the disposable income to buy a highend video editing package and 3d modelling software. but then again if you look hard enough, you can find free and education editions of most of the major software packages. http://www.alias.com/glb/eng/products-services/pro duct_details.jsp?productId=1900003

no, whats even funnier is that nintendo knows that they will be ripped off. they are playing it up to build excitement. they know their consumers. they know that nintendo fans like the mystery and love the fact that they are keeping tabs on their plans. thats why they are nintendo fans and havent jumped ship yet; because they dislike sony and MS' way of overexaggerating everything.

if nintendo comes up with something/ anything truly revolutionary, then it will obviously revolutionize all consoles from then forward. if its a big enough hit sony will find a way to incorporate it into the ps3, and ms will incorporate it into the 360. look at the analog stick. look at the d-pad. look at controller vibration. look at the trigger buttons. they found a way to incorporate those things into the other systems. either by modelling something after it [the d-pad] or just buying the rights to license it into their machines like MS did with their controller vibration tech.

im hoping that its all along the lines of their new going underground ideology. not talking it up; and just springing it on us. xbox live is nice, but it could stand to be better. alot better! and i hope sony realizes that its not to late to at the very least play catchup.

the point is just as you say; MS is willing to sell its licenses. it wants everyone to play by its rules and follow its vision. what about the vision of others? getting away from /just/ music, look at some of the other more popular media formats. divx, xvid, mp4... when MS decides that it is willing to go that extra mile to incorporate those into xbox360 or even WMP itself, then you wont have these issues. MS is willing to play nice with everyone, but only if they are playing by MS's rules in the first place.

apple has a similar stance. its just that apple is more outwardly honest: now that they have the best product on the block doesnt mean that they HAVE to share with everyone. its a messed up stance on their part, but at least its honest.

what about as new formats that come to market? MS hasn't been exactly quick to incorporate codecs into their media players. seriously, unless they open up the xbox360 to the homebrew community [which they wont] chances are that your xbox 360 mdeia center will never be able to play your divx collection, or sync your collection of mp4 movies to your psp or do any of the grand features that MS is touting.

im sure they will play up the ability to use custom soundtracks for your favorite games i guess. the real problem is, with custom libraries and three different copies of your library, the only way an xbox based music service could work would be to allow itunes and the ipod to sync/ read music bought with the xbox360. i dont see MS doing so, and unless they build in a way to sync with the ipod, psp, or other music devices. i see xbox 360 being crippled from birth.

the way i see it. sony only needs to support the rsx graphics chipset. thats the benefit of it being a console. no need to supply drivers for anything else. why should/would they?

the dev kits run linux anyways, so the idea of providing it for home use is simple. they already have a ps3 friendly distro. its already done; epic has had their dev kit for months now.

sony doesnt want people using their ps3s to create games for pc. lol.

nah, of course sony wouldnt sweat the homebrew factor. its the piracy factor that they are afraid of. its like handing over the key to the door because the valuables are in a safe and then telling everyone the combination of the safe too.

i mean in a perfect world sony would create a image disk with whatever lowlevel linux that they are going to use as their gaming environment and another partition with a distro of linux that you can futz around with til your hearts content. lil jimmy destroyed both partitions with his latest game development project? no problem, stick the cd in and it returns the HD to the default factory state.

that would be perfect, but what about when lil jimmy wants the latest and greatest games? youve got your gigabit ethernet, he coded up his own p2p app in linux, and now hes got the games downloaded. whats the next step? you got it, hes gonna code up his own loader. next stop? jail! lil jimmie is getting hauled off for piracy, since the built-in DRM on the ps3 reported him the second he downloaded the iso.

but in all honesty, many many enthusiasts release their own independent games out into the market. many many computer games are pirated. homebrew will not steal the spotlight from a million dollar industry [although i LOVE the idea of mods, updates and patches for console games]. piracy will always be an issue, period. might as well stare it head on and pray on the strength of your DRM and that for the first couple of years blu-ray burners will be too expensive for casual piracy. your more hardcore gamers will STILL go out and buy the games they love and that will be that.

right now. i believe that columbia is the company major motion picture studio that still supports mini-dvd [i might have the company wrong, but there is only one studio left; thats a fact]. as a writable media, we will all have to wait and see how far UMDs go, but the fact that they have been accepted as a medium faster than dvds were, and they are only playable in one medium [for the time being] really says alot.

if the psp fails as a gaming device [and once third party support starts to hit its stride, i dont foresee that happening], the psp is still a very, very viable movie player; that is unless apple can come up with an iMoviePlayer or something absurd. since the movie studios are even more paranoid about allowing downloads of their property, i dont see that happening either.

as for the quality titles comment, i meant that as with the playstation there are titles in every genre that appeal to everyone. not all, but many gameboy titles are just little sibling titles to console titles. looking at the upcoming lineup for PSP, you could say the same thing, but the fact is that overall the PSP will offer a more varied cross-section of genres.

competition is good, but you have to admit; both handhelds are aimed at the same markets. whenever the topic of handhelds come up, the inevitable comparison rears its head. DS vs PSP. "the psp didnt sell out, but the DS did". when they were still tentative devices, nintendo reps were talking it up against the psp. once the psp came out and stole alot of its 'ooh and ah' factor, the reps came out with the whole 'its not meant to compete with the psp' line. its just like whole: 'the ds is not a replacement for the gameboy line'. its corporate talk to make it seem like they have something better planned. the new gameboy will not come out for at least three years. they just came out with the ds, i respect nintendo more than to imagine that they would burn ds users by coming out with yet another system that quick. besides, if its not a replacement why would it be backwards compatible with the gameboy line? the same gameboy line which the psp is competing with...

the psp can store your own videos on it without anything extra other than enough space. and thats out of the box, not requiring some obscure piece of hardware from half a world away.

the point is that now they have dvd quality discs; no more rooting around downloading crappy quality crap just to reencode it to an even more crappy quality media to play it on some crappy handheld screen. the fact that the media is porn just makes it more taboo since most people associate the ps with video games, and thereby a child's toy. sony stated quite flatly that their latest incarnations of hardware are not simply for video games or for the kiddie age demographics. they are building media centers. so they want people to be able to show off their equipment. porn is just their way of marketing to everyone. you can watch whatever youre into: from anime to summer hits to porn. they got something for everyone. as much as we sweep it under the rug, porn is a serious industry and lots of money could stand to be made from it, and could sway more and more people into the sony camp. bottomline, thats all they care about in the end.
