  1. Re:Seconded on Hack turns GIMP into Photoshop Look-alike · · Score: 1

Well yes, I do agree, but even though the interface change might make it easier for some people to use the GIMP, it's my opinion that these same people are impatient and some might even refuse to learn how to use new software with a different interface that does the same thing. I used to use other software for image editing and wanted to switch to the GIMP. It took me a little while to figure out how things were done, but now I know how powerful the GIMP can be. A little patience and the desire to learn is what people really need and not some go-between interface to make them feel better about themselves.

The best free firewall that gives you control like this is Sygate's Personal Firewall. It gives you process level control of who and what can access the network on what interface and (optionally) at what time. I use this firewall on one of my computers that's running Windows Server 2003. It would be nice if Microsoft tried to make their built in firewall more flexible like this one is for the server environment.

The only thing I don't like about this idea is that anyone managing a technical project like this needs to have established technical skills and knowledge. Most politicans in governments seem to have demonstrated that they largely lack this skill. ICANN is a good regulatory body because the people there are technically qualified to work with this stuff.

If governments step in to regulate the internet instead of some organization like ICANN, then it's possible that we will see a lot of controversial decisions made on behalf of the internet that might not make a lot of sense to us. Or governments might feel compelled to exert even more control over the information that travels throught the network.

Yes, there are encryption applications for most operating systems, but the big difference with NTFS is that encryption is built into the file system's spec. It might leave some unencrypted data around, but a lot of the recently used unclaimed space seems to get trashed quickly.

I really liked immersion's idea of trying to get more games and applications to support force feedback. I have an iFeel mouse, and I really love what some games can do with it. Although last time I checked, it seemed like Immersion was having trouble getting developers to add vibration support to PC games. I noticed that they had some cheesy software on their web site that enabled devices to rumble based on the sound that the user hears.. sigh.

Microsoft had better be joking. After all, even if they see a version of CSS as flawed, a ton of web sites use it, not having compliant support for the standard would make unnecessary trouble for many web developers. This sort of thing sounds really arrogant coming from the same team that introduced the non-standard Microsoft way of doing things into just about virtually everything. (They put in a hack for IE to have it evaluate JavaScript expressions in CSS for example. Using this feature is one way to work around their non-existant support for the max/min-width properties in CSS. HMM.)

The images on the site looked nice, but I wish they had put an iPod with a regular LCD alongside the one with the nanotech display for reference.

The image remains on the display even after power is removed, and does not require a backlight. That cuts power requirements dramatically, according to the company. Although painting the initial image takes more power than with an LCD, once displayed, the image will remain for days or weeks without needing another charge.

So this doesn't sound like a replacement for most LCDs that make frequent updates to their display like an iPod, right? Although it seems well suited for the eBook and alarm clock, since they're devices that update their display infrequently. The eBook could especially benefit from the high resolution display.

Since it seems that the display doesn't clear itself if you remove the power, it would be interesting for firmware writers to have to flush the display on devices before a power down. The assumption with the current technology is no power = no display.
