I *THINK* what he means is if you're doing a large order, the OEM will often do a base install of whatever you want - instead of them preloading the default image.
I know my college did this - they got one base system with all the installation CDs, set it up as they wanted, and each quarter would send Dell an updated HD image - all the new systems came loaded with that. I don't think they paid extra for it, either. (Dell had to load *SOMETHING* on the system - might as well benefit the customer)
Make a copy, plant a tracking device or get address off of registration in glove box. Steal car at another time - say, a week later - and no one will think you did it. (Say, as a valet or coat-check)
Swivel arm, or a monitor you can easily lift and set on a taller object?
One coworker for awhile had his PC upright (Desktop on edge, so standing all) against the back of the cube wall, and set his LCD on top. Then put his keyboard & mouse on a pile of books. Worked for him, kept him standing.
I do this automagically - I have one Window represent a "site" or "topic" then the tabs within all relate. If I find a link that is interesting, but unrelated, I spawn it in another window.
Also makes it easy to bookmark one window-session for later - "Oh, I better focus on XYZ because of the deadline...I'll bookmark this stuff on ABC for later."
No, its true. I was kicking myself after buying 2 copies of the Platinum Pack (retail, included all the original HL content)
Its how I ended up with 8 Steam accounts for the HL stuff - 3 per on those (HL, CS and one of the expansions) and a pair of retail HL boxes I ended up getting off my neighbor for some repair back in the day...
They're based in Illinois but I found them in a Rainbow Foods here in Minneapolis, MN. (at the Quarry location, just north up 35W from downtown & Dinkytown, for anyone that cares)
Bit spendy - I'm the only one out of my roommates that really drinks milk, so I only buy 1/2 gallon anyway - but at $2.99 + $0.85 deposit, they come in a glass jug. Costs an extra $0.70 over any other half-gallon, but in this case they're "better than organic." (Short answer: They'd be organic, except they allow cows to be pulled from the herd when sick and taken care of with antibiotics, but that cow's milk isn't allowed back into the shipments until it tests 100% clean of the antibotics)
So I get healthier milk, don't have to use jugs that will get thrown away - I take them with me when I go back for more and get my deposit back - I consider it a win.
I'll bet there's other companies around the US and North America as a whole that offer things like this.
They called me on Saturday to thank me for the recent auto-renewal for my domains; asked me if I had intentions of letting another one lapse that's coming due (I'd forgotten; it was my first one through them and I wasn't sure I liked Godaddy, so set it on manual); and asked me if I had any issues, questions or concerns.
First time I've ever gotten a call from a Registrar, other than that one that called me saying I urgently needed to renew. (Was some other one trying to snipe registrations, like the "Domain Registry of America" that I always get snail-mail from.)
I think I'll be staying with Godaddy - plus when I register one, there's an easy step: "hosting with us, or got your own nameservers?" I do my own hosting; so that's an awesome step. Don't have to go change it after the fact. I think I'm up to a half dozen domains of my own; plus another dozen that I host for others.

We keep a pile by one door (along with all our other recycling) of things pre-tagged with "Please Take" - recycling week comes, I haul two out along with everything else before I leave for work in the morning.
OEM copies aren't tied to the BIOS or the board or any piece of hardware.
BUT
Many OEMs nowadays are ONLY shipping restore CDs/DVDs/images/partitions with their new machines. Replace the motherboard, and the restore disk goes "HEY! That's not my hardware!" and refuses to load.
eMachines did it back with Windows 98SE - checked for specific hardware on boot, and didn't load if it found something else.
Yes, yes it does.

Oh my god, that is the BEST way to re-purpose a Slashdot meme I've seen to date.
Had to comment, rather than moderate.

You're forgetting one VERY important thing, that often leads to companies driving their newly-acquired divisions into the ground:
Profits

If the remote is too small, build a block around it. They've got the steering wheel, the gun - just make a bigger box to hold it in.
Heck, manufacture them and sell them for $20 to other people like you.
Speaking of which, where is our Mortal Kombat 3: Ultimate machine?
Oooh. I would be most interested in reading this SciFi story - you plan on publishing or posting it anytime soon?
Sounds like it should be fun!
