God I wish I hadn't commented already so I could mod THIS up... Frankly I don't think its gonna be very long at all before those of us who use Linux and don't suck at the MS teat will be targeted.. first, just by marginalization, then further on, being persecuted/arrested/jailed due to some regulation that some government bureaucracy decides to add to the infinite "rules/regulations" that these unelected crooks keep coming up with. I seem to recall a couple of years ago, some Congresscritter called Linux a terrorists tool... Call me a conspiracy nut, but remember you heard it here first...

  3. That's what I do.. both my desktop and laptop came with Windows 7, but I 99.99999999% gave up Windows in 2011, and moved to Linux on both systems. However, since there are a couple of Windows programs I need to run that don't play nice with Wine (or Crossover even) I installed Win7 as a Virtualbox VM, and used the key that came with the laptop and desktop to run Winblowz on VBox.. Yes, I know.. this is against MS's precious EULA, but I couldn't care less as I extend my middle finger at Redmond.. Lately I've found I have to turn off WU as it keeps trying (in vain) to stuff that turd, known as Win10 on my VMs, along with trying to put the "telemetry" crap on also....

Now on the topic at hand.. WTF is Canonical smoking to want to have ANYTHING to do with MS?? MS probably is slipping a few million to Canonical to get this kind of insanity on the table... I currently run KUbuntu 14.04 but am seriously considering going back to my Linux roots, that being Slackware, since the next LTS release comes with that abortion, systemd..

I've come to the conclusion that Windows 10 and MS's abhorrent behavior makes Windows 10 a computer-equivalent of a sexually transmitted disease.. Call it say, a CTD. Of course in the case of the STD, a nice little rubber balloon does a fair job of protecting the "family-jewels" from said STD. In the case of a CTD, its quite a bit more complicated, but simply disabling WU does a pretty fine job...Of course, Windows being what it is, I certainly wouldn't advise disabling WU unless you take certain other precautions prior to using the system on the wild-n-wooly internet...

  8. Good god... No kidding.. I too, played with it for a while during preview and actually converted one of the OEM licenses for 7 Pro that came on one of my Dell systems over to 10, and installed it on a spare drive for my laptop. Since I normally (99.9999% of the time) am running one Linux distro or another on the laptop, I figured it would be a good way to see what all the hubbub was about.. Sure, it looks fairly nice and seems to run fairly smoothly on a Core2Quad with 8Gb of ram.. But, after seeing what a privacy nghtmare it was, even when installed in a "castrated" manner, I put the drive on the shelf to be used when I decide to play around with another Linux distro on the laptop.. Ain't NO way in hell I'm gonna use MS products anymore, despite the fact I used/supported them as a helldesk flunky+sysadmin for nearly 20 years.. Being I'm retired I have become the defacto neighborhood tech support, and I do my best to keep the less-knowledgable folks I work with to stay on Windows 7 for the time being.. The way MS keeps playing whack-a-mole trying to get their spyware crap on these systems, I've advised everybody to turn off WU.. I put Sandboxie on said systems, and force Firefox to run via Sandboxie, plus uBlock Origin/Ghostery. MS has lost ANY trust I *ever* had for them... Yeah, I know, they're a souless corporation and this kind of behavior is to be expected.. NOT BY ME!!!

  9. Dell seems to be on a kick of only offering Linux on their consumer-grade systems..ie: Inspiron/XPS/Alienware. I've yet to see any Ubuntu offerings on any Precision workstation laptops.. Of course, it may be that technically astute users who would buy a Precision workstation with Ubuntu Linux might just buy the system as-is with Windows, and then either dual-boot it with Linux or like I did with my current system, a Precision M4400, which was to wipe Windows 7 off the system, install Ubuntu, and Virtualbox and install Windows 7 as a VM using the product key that came with the system. Admittedly I don't use the Windows 7 VM much anymore, since Linux does pretty much everything I need, with a couple minor exceptions of a couple of Windows programs that don't work under Wine (or Crossover Office).. Lately its become necessary to completely turn off updates on Windows 7 to prevent MS putting their telemetry shit on my system....

Since both of my main home systems came with Windows 7 Pro, I created a Virtualbox Windows 7 VM on each, using the productkey for the original Windows7 on the system. Up until the fact that MS was sliding their crapware "telemetry" updates into Windows 7 too, I'd been only firing up the VM every month or so to let it update. Now, I have disabled WU on it, and keep it for "legacy" sakes.. Frankly I'm torn between laughing my ass off when I hear about how MS has fucked up Windows 10, and being really really sorry to see so many people using it and having no flippin' clue (OR just not giving a shit) about what a total nightmare Windows 10 is..
