... Late breaking news about the updated "Jaws":

Famous Hollywood producer and director Steven Spielberg will include a new crew member to the enhanced version of the "Jaws". "Jar Jar" will be a computer generated addition to the fishing boat Orca. Spielberg said 'Jar Jar will give a much needed contrast between the updated action scenes in the film' and promised that the film would be suitable for wider audiences.

In your situation I would definitely get better equipment and in this case a better multi-io sound card or breakout box. Routing the audio through a mixer and few input cards sounds like a way too complex setup. Your own words were "This method has been very buggy".

If you buy one good multi-io card you can skip the mixer, skip any extra mic-preamps and drop the extra sound cards. With one card and a suitable recording software you'll get perfect multitrack recording.

Unfortunately only a few audio interfaces support 2 or more mic inputs, but this one from Alesis seems to have 8 http://www.alesis.com/product.php?id=94

You're right, I could have lied about my identity. But CastrTroy was right, that was about a principle. I support things which I like and I don't support things which I don't like. I hope that in the long run market forces will make the "good" things flourish and drive the "bad" things/companies/whatever out of business. For example: Sony bad, open source good. When enough people start making conscious choises the companies might actually start caring about their customers again.

And for the record, since I'm Finnish I couldn't care less about Bank of America or its offerings, specially if I might get spam from it.

  10. Bank of America on How Well Do Businesses Respond to Phishing Reports? · · Score: 3, Interesting
I almost submitted a report about a phishing attack to the Bank of America. What stopped me was that the feedback form required me to submit my email address with the feedback and the feedback page's EULA had something like this in there: "we might use your address to send occasionaly information about our services". I may be paranoid but that translates way too easily to "we will be sending you spam as soon as possible".

And no, I didn't send them feedback on how they could improve their website.

The latest Microsoft mouse drivers (IntelliPoint 5.5) have an assignable mouse function called "Precision Booster". When you click (or hold, depending on the mode) the assigned mouse button, you get 2x precision. Another fancy feature was "Gaming Toggle" which allows you to record key macro on the fly with the mouse. Haven't had the chance to try these, but the added precision will be probably used here :)

  21. Re:A warning to audiophiles on BBC Offers Beethoven Symphonies for Download · · Score: 3, Interesting
Variable Bit Rate was first. VBR means mp3s are encoded with variable bitrate where encoder makes guesses about the needed bitrate based on the content. This allows the encoder to allocate more bits for the parts which really need better quality.

After a while people noticed that the changes in the bitrate were in some cases too audible and reduced the illusion and immersion of the encoded audio.

So, Average Bit Rate tries to avoid that by keeping the variable bitrate somewhere around the specified bitrate.
