Mainframes are still around in part because for some of the bigger custmers, IBM will drop their shorts to keep them on a mainframe.
That's what happened for quite some time where I worked.

In my shop we are currently converting a bunch of IBM Mainframe applications (mostly written in Natural and COBOL) to open intranet applications. The decision ended up being an easy one because this way will save a boat load of money. However, IBM still worked hard to make sure we are using a DB2 database, which overall doesn't really work as well as some other database applications with what we are doing.

  5. All the people like me on Yet Another Look at CD Sales · · Score: 1

I bought twice as many cd's back in Napster's heyday as I do now....probably more.
Granted, the current economy makes me think twice about some of my more frivolous purchases, but the main reason is that my exposure to music has been cut down.

Back when Napster was kicking, my friends would send me an e-mail saying "Hey, check out this song by this band." I would go to Napster, give it a listen and if I liked their music I might go buy the cd. These days, I just don't get to hear the songs, except for what popular radio shoves down our throat during drive time. I won't be buying any of those cd's anytime soon.

The labels want to be able to steer people to the music they want to sell, not the music that the people necessarily like.

Screw that. I'll just keep listening to the good songs that I already have.

And that is why Microsoft owns the market. They play to the "point&click People", also known as the "majority". Linux tends to be such a "smart" tool that your everyday user finds it too cumbersome. Most of them just want to click on an icon and get on the internet, or click an icon and read e-mail. It's a pretty simple concept that most braniacs will never grasp.

You didn't catch all that, did you? Granted, I wouldn't mind seeing what you are talking about happen, but it will be a long time coming. Like it or not, Microsoft IS the standard right now. Most developers MAY want to code to a standard and not a browser, but when one browser owns the market, you better make damn sure that your web page looks and works good in that browser. Even if you have to break the "standards" to make it that way.

Not to say you can't learn civil behavior from religion, but there is no black and white here. Just going to church doesn't make you a saint.

I know what you meant towards the end there, but I have to restate one part. There is nothing bigger than us...as in all of us. The problem as I see it with society today and what has been repeated again and again in this discussion is that people don't think about US. The think about ME. What do I want...What do I need...What do I deserve. A whole lot of us today don't take into account how our actions effect others. Even if you do, I'd bet you don't do all the time. I try to, because that's how I was raised. Even still I catch myself sometimes looking out for #1 first before anyone else and not thinking about how it might effect someone else.

Now the problem we have reached is "Why should I think about other people? It's not like everyone is looking out for me." That's not gonna change, no matter how hard we try.
It all falls back to ME again. At the end of the day I know that I've done the best I could and tried to stick by my morals and not mess up anyone else's good vibe.

The five yard halo keeps people from getting killed. Seeing a knockout blow on almost every punt was not the intent of the rule (although one might wonder with the WWF being involved).
The big thing about "no fair catches" is that it's there to guarantee a run back (or attempt) on every punt. The other rule that wasn't hyped, or talked about as much was the fact that it's a free ball after 20 or 25 yards (I forget). Again, forcing the returner to catch it. For those who don't know, in other forms of american football the returner can let the ball go by and the defense can down it (for the return team to take over) wherever they touch it.
