    I ran KDE under OSX via Fink years ago. Gnome too. It was kinda cool for a few minutes, then I never bothered again. I like OSX so much better. Isn't that why we pay extra for our Macs? If you don't want to take advantage of OSX then you might as well just get a cheap PC and put Linux or BSD on it.

    If there's any hope for radio it's in independant stations like that which "add value". (Too bad that liking music is now an added value and not a given.) Dial-N-Deal sounds like a great idea, just the kind of thing that people could get hooked on, and which couldn't exist on Clearchannel clone stations whose content are pre-programmed and pre-recorded at a faraway studio somewhere and have no community involvement whatsoever.

    I agree 100% that Clearchannel is killing radio. Those stations replay the same crap at the same time, day after day.

    It's too bad that this may be necessary, but maybe you can contact some local news people and become the subject of a "human interest" story: "Big Bad Insurance Company Won't Help Burn Victim".

    People are often very kind about donating to such a cause; it might also shame your insurance company into helping you out.

    According to this, Dell shipped 8.8 million units in the fourth quarter of 2004, while this says that Apple shipped 836,000 Macs in their fourth quarter. The two companies' fiscal quarters may not precicely coincide, but that's still over ten times the number of Dells sold than Macs.

    It's a nice thought, but as happy as Intel apparently is to have Apple as a customer, Apple's got a lot of catching up to do before their clout is greater than Dell's.

    It's only in the last couple of years that Apple has finally included USB 2.0 in their new Macs; there are a lot of Mac users (even fairly recent ones) who are stuck with USB 1.1 because they don't have PCI slots and don't want to buy a new machine just for USB2.0, especially when they already have Firewire.

    It's just kind of annoying when you're content with your Mac in every other respect.

    But seriously folks. I was at the bookstore the other day and picked up a Computer Shopper. When did this new thin format happen? What happened to 500 pages of advertisements?

    I haven't thought about Computer Shopper in years! It used to be a great resource for ordering computer parts (like individual RAM chips, back when they were necessary). What happened to them (and other mail order rags) is the Web; it's so much easier to order online now. Kinda sad, really; I used to enjoy flipping through it "window shopping".

    That much space would be great for a PVR application; you'd be surprised how quickly that eats up space, especially at DVD quality.

    Too bad it's Deskstar. "Now lose more data than ever!"

    It'll be a long time before I ever consider getting another "Deathstar" drive.

    Aside from privacy issues, what if there's no phone or network line anywhere near where you wish to put the player? People HATE having to run extension lines around the room.

    What if you want to play these discs on a laptop that is away from any network connection, or in a car? What if you want a standalone, portable player? Those have become common scenarios for playing DVD's nowadays.

    Tell the average "Joe Sixpack" that Sony can remotely destroy his player anytime they want and he will be PISSED. Don't underestimate the average Joe's ability to understand what it means to be fucked over by a big company.

    This WILL fail. That this idea has made it so far into the market shows how completely out of touch the execs at Sony are.

    Maybe this would be a good time for some Chinese company to come out with its own standard HD discs and recorder/player. Sure, you won't be able to buy Hollywood movies released on that format, but it could ignite a home-recording hobbiest market.

    Maybe people would even start watching Bollywood and Chinese movies released in that format (if you could just get them used to subtitles) :-)

    I have a real problem with this guy's immature attitude. Sure, what the Fuddruckers webmaster did was a little rude, although it could have been a simple lapse in judgement, and who hasn't had one of those? (Only a liar would claim they haven't.)

    What harm did he suffer? The indignity of having his game (a rip-off itself) linked-to without permission plus a 5% increase in traffic. What does he hope to do in retaliation for this grave injustice? Cause someone to lose their job. Yeah, that's fair. Regardless the likelyhood of such an outcome, the guy's a flippant prick for wishing it. Also, while slaugherhouse pictures are certainly preferable to the goatse guy, they're not exactly kid-friendly either.

    (And no, I have absolutely nothing to do with Fuddruckers, other than having enjoyed a burger there from time to time.)

    Seriously, you're absolutely right in that it is about the eye candy. Nothing wrong with that though, although I do wish that everyone would just be honest about it and stop trying to come up with some bogus productivity justification for wanting to have a "shiny" desktop.

    If you want to have a plain, utilitarian computing experience then go ahead and stick with the plain-jane window manager and cheap video card; that's fine for you. But don't get on the case of everyone else who enjoys a flashy desktop. Desktop computers should be fun, and fun is the reason why many like playing with Linux in the first place.

    Trying to get the ATI driver to work under Fedora (core 3 in my case) was nothing but a nightmare. I never did get 3D acceleration to work. ATI's kernel module just didn't like Fedora's kernel even after I patched it; even when I finally got it to compile it would segfault on load. I could've compiled a generic kernel but by that point I was fed up and installed Suse 9.3; the ATI drivers worked with no problem.

    This was with a Radeon 9800Pro. The system's previous card was a Geforce3 and NVidia's drivers never gave me any trouble under Fedora.

    As for your problem, it probably is the ATI driver, but just in case it might be worth giving a different distro a try, especially if you have some spare disk space for it.

    I was wondering if the NTFS driver developers for the Linux kernel might find this documentation useful in order to enable NTFS writing in Linux, finally. My question had nothing to do with data recovery and everything to do with the fact that apparently somebody has finally documented NTFS.

    So, was the author somehow able to get more in-depth documentation on NTFS than the Linux NTFS driver developers have?

    I'd love to see reliable and fast NTFS writing capability in Linux without having to use Captive-NTFS. Maybe the developers should buy a copy of this book.

    His portrayal of Bester actually made me forget all about Chekov, to the point that when I see Walter Koenig I think "Bester" instead of "Chekov". Considering how deeply the 'Trek characters have been driven into our memories over the decades, that's quite a testimony to his acting ability.

    I've a friend who's a TOS purist, and she absolutely hates to see William Shatner anywhere other than TOS because his "goofiness" ruins her image of Kirk. Geez, I wish she'd lighten up.

    I like goofy Shatner! He knows he's a big goofball and he has fun with it. The guy always makes me laugh.

    What he is suggesting is that when Apple releases a new version (i.e. 10.5) they should give away the old version on IPod's (i.e. 1.4) to woo new users to try it out.

    OK fine, my eyes skipped the "4".

    The way it was worded strongly suggested to me that OSX was installed onto the iPod, rather that having an installer image. I don't care enough to argue about that, but I stand by my other points - it's a silly idea that Apple will be giving away OSX, even an older version.
