My first experience with the World Wide Web was similar to subby -- it was in the Sun lab at the Department of Computer Science at Old Dominion University. The browser was NCSA Mosaic, and the workstations were about half black & white and half color. The rise of the Web started minor fights for the color monitors! Back in these days, the Web was pre-Google (or should I say, "BG", as opposed to "AG";-) . . . the home page was set to the local ODUCS website, and from there you could go to the NCSA Mosaic "What's New on the WWW" page and find interesting stuff. Plus, there was also the horny geeks on the 17th floor (p0rn), somewhere in Belgium,. . .;-) Then, along came the Cool Site of the Day, featuring a new site every day of the week, which was fun. Back in those days, things were so new I never expected that I'd watch most TV shows via the Internet or access the WWW on my iPhone,. ..
Well, there is hope. TLC finally gave Kate Gosselin the boot! Unfortunately, she was replaced by Big Hair Alaska, a new reality show about Sarah Palin's hairdresser in Wasilla. Yikes!
The quality of the singers and musicians make a difference, too. Rebecca Black's Friday isn't going to sound good whether it's played on cheap, low-end gear or expensive, high-end stuff,. . . Garbage in, garbage out.
Both Science and Nature have pretty good iPhone/iPad apps which make reading the latest news on the go quite easy. Slashdot also does a pretty good job at highlighting some of the bigger stuff, though there's no iPhone app yet (but there is an Android app). I'm also a chemist, so I usually read anything on the ACS Publications website, focusing on the Journal of the American Chemical Society, the Journal of Medicinal Chemistry, and Biochemistry. I also read Chemical & Engineering News, and they have an email option and a Facebook presence, which makes it easy to access.
Most people here also weren't born when Admiral Ackbar muttered his famous, "It's a Trap!" line in Return of the Jedi, either, but that doesn't stop them from turning it into the Greatest Internet Meme Ever!;-)
Plus, of course, our nation was led for the past 8 years by the first President to have an MBA,... He was also a C student at Yale,... Look where that led us!
As popular as the movie Spaceballs has become, it's still a great mystery why so many people continue to use a simple sequential number sequence like that as their primary password,. . . I guess most people are idiots?
Blackberry isn't dead yet! Just in the past few weeks, I've seen tons of signs on the highways here in eastern Tennessee advertising Blackberries! They're selling them by the ton! Oh, wait! Those are signs for the fruity variety, not the phones. Sorry, my bad!;-)
Yeah, I know. It sucks. But it's a first generation Acer Aspire One with the older battery, not the newer one. So the most I've ever gotten out of it is about 2 hours.
Lately, every time I go to a bar (Knoxville, TN), there's somebody sitting there with an iPad out. I'll admit, I'm one of these geeks that might do it, if I had an iPad -- after all, I have brought my Acer netbook and Kindle to a bar, mostly for either reading or meeting with someone. And, of course, the fact that most bars around here seem to have free wifi these days might encourage it,. . . The big issue with using a netbook at a bar, though, is the battery life -- my netbook only gets an hour and a half of battery power before needing a recharge. Plus, with the keyboard and all, it's a bit bulkier than an iPad, and you look a little "geekier" with it. An iPad is just, quite simply, more elegant. I just hope nobody spills a drink on that expensive thing,. ..
Just don't put HP in charge of coming up with a standard! They have a horrible track record at this! I've had two HP notebooks, a ZD7000 and a DV9000, and both of them developed power connector issues within two years. This is welldocumented. One would think that there ought to be a cable or charger of some sort that would allow you to charge via USB, since that works for most mobile phones and small devices, but maybe the USB spec can't handle the amount of power necessary to power the whole computer.
Being that the term "geek" is somewhat of a generic term, I thought the proper legal method here would be to do what the Science Fiction Channel did a few years ago, and redefine their brand as "Syfy". So you could rewrite "geek" as "geak" or "geke",. ..

Cue all the "Android users are smarter" posts in 3 ... 2 ... 1!
ALL of the Star Trek series are not there quite yet. Deep Space Nine is still absent, though I am told that it is coming October 1.

Now, the Gatorade will be dumped on the LOSING TEAM'S COACH, instead of the winning team's coach,. . .
I bet it still tastes better than New Coke!
Hey, we should be so lucky! Over on Fark, Drew Curtis still can't find his way from the pub to the launch complex!
TK-421, why aren't you at your post? TK-421, do you copy? TK-421, stop posting to Slashdot and get back to work!
No, but it costs an ARM and a LEG!
Don't let the chair hit you in the ass on the way out!
Fark.com uses it's favorite squirrel for it's 404 error page.

How many libraries of congress is that?

Replacement for cable sports: sports bar, which also has a nice beer tap along with it,. . .
Occasionally, sports bars may host a Fark party, satisfying both of those options in one! =)
I thought US Airways already tried to do this with an old Airbus A-320 back in '09? It wasn't quite as popular back then because it was January and frigid,. . .

A $100 netbook? Are you f'ing kidding me?! My iPhone cost more than that!
