wondershaper... Yah, I've been wanting to look into QoS for a few months now. First because I was on dialup, and my apt-get-update was timing out all over the place. Now I'm on cable modem (4Mbit) and wanting things to even out, cuz I'm (still) using Squid proxy server to share my connection with various Linux and Win boxen over the LAN.
I've found at least 2; one was a used 6-gig which I exchanged, and the other was a brand-new Hitachi that was basically a relabeled Deathstar, IIRC.
BTW, I absolutely refuse to buy Western Digital due to them screwing me over a few years ago with a return; to me, their drives are crap plain and simple. Doesn't matter what their price point is, how fast they are, whatever. I will never buy WD again.
I've never had any trouble with Maxtor or Seagate, but then again that's just my personal experience.
--I've found that ' xftree ' and ' gqview ' (separate package) are a decent alternative to konqueror, at least for local files. Much resource savings since you don't have to load multiple kdeinits.

You should look to your cooling, my friend... 7200rpm drives like plenty of air, especially a dual-fan HD cooler. I run all my boxen open-case, buy Maxtor, and my drives last for YEARS.
Hint: ' noatime ' in your fstab options helps - a lot.
If plane - Yes, you're prolly right. However, the diffused laser is obviously still bright enough when it reaches the plane to potentially blind or injure someone who sees it.
But a helicopter... That could be close enough for an Uzi or a HP rifle to shatter the cockpit and injure/kill the pilot, causing a crash.
Note that I also said "guided missile".;-) I think we've all seen the videos of laser-guided missiles in Iraq and how effective they were at demolishing their targets...
Gates still hasn't learned enough to PRACTICE with the demo equipment before doing his shtick in public?? Somebody's head is going to roll when he gets back to his Back Orifice.:P
--I have a Dell Latitude CP (P166) that also has a 2-PCI-slot dock. Works in both Linux and Windoze. Bought the laptop a few years ago for ~$200; the docking station was on Ebay for less than $50 but I had to move quick 'cuz I lost the 1st one I bid on.
Also have a P166 Toshiba Tecra 520CDT with 3-slot PCI/ISA docking station, but the dock only works in Win98 and not Linux. (For the curious, I did try contacting a kernel developer about 1 1/2 years ago but he never got back to me. Appears to be a broken bridge driver.)
Neither of these are currently for sale by me; but you should be able to find them elsewhere for cheap.
--Oh, get real. You really think he was ONLY pointing out stars, when the RESCUE HELICOPTER was also painted??:P
"Pointing out stars" sounds like a convenient cover-your-ass excuse to me. Think about how you would feel from the POV of the pilot(s) who were **temporarily blinded**, or if you were in the helicopter while it was being painted by a laser beam.
You don't *know* what's on the other end of that beam - could be a laser pointer, could be a guided missile, could be a handgun or high-powered rifle, could be an Uzi for all you know.
The fact that this idiot did this TWICE, to two different *aircraft,* after 9/11 - that alone makes his actions suspicious and open to action on the part of the government.
I don't think he quite deserves 25 years, but still.
--I do believe you're right. 25 years is WAY too harsh for something like this; 6 months to 1 year should be more than enough to warn people off (unless Something Bad happens because of laser-painting.)
--Nonono... You boot the CD, then install it to HD. That's how I set up 2 boxen and 2 laptops; all my home + client stuff are running Kpx installed to HD. The box I'm posting this from is a squid server that was bootstrapped by kpx. Give it a try, once it's installed it becomes just like regular Debian w/ update/upgrade, etc.

Thanks for the wondershaper info.
Here's what I use for normalize syntax:
echo ' o PK TO NORMALIZE VOLUME!!'
read
time normalize --mix --fractions -v *wav

Good info; I'll have to reference this somewhere.
However, this assumes that the user has the "smartsuite" pkg installed. Badblocks is more common in default distro pkg selections.
If it does, I've never seen it. And you have to admit, even if it has some DRM, it's nowhere NEAR what WMP 9+ has.

I run this test on EVERY new/used hard drive I buy, before putting it into regular use:
/dev/hdX ' /dev/hdX '
' hdparm -c1 -d1
' time badblocks -c 256 -n -s -v

This is one reason why I've stuck to Windows Media player 7.1 and Win98SE. Yes, I'm serious.
:)
However, on the Linux side I use mplayer, xine and xmms...
