Try and beat this: Once, I got a letter from Verizon notifying me that I had been overbilled on a certain tax for the previous year, and that I would soon be receiving a check in the mail for $0.04. Sure enough, a month or so later, they mailed me the check, which I promptly cashed. Then, a month or so after that, they mailed me another letter notifying me that they had sent the check. All told, three separate mailings.

Widescreen is often produced by shooting in 4:3 aspect ratio and cropping off the top and bottom of the frame to get a 16:9 aspect ratio. I've noticed this on many DVDs. The fullscreen version actually shows more of the original negative.

It's probably Super 35 you're referring to, except that Super 35 is shot in 1.60:1. The Matrix movies were filmed with this process. The 4:3 versions of the films show more on the top and bottom, but slightly less on the sides.

This may result in a reaction of "Wow! I'm seeing more picture than was shown in theaters!", but really the theatrical image is what was intended to be seen. For Super35 films, 2.35:1 is still the original aspect ratio, because it is the aspect ratio that viewers were intended to see in the theater. Therefore, the widescreen version is still the preferred format. When shooting the film, the director has a TV monitor with a rectangular outline that represents the 2.35:1 image. This shows the director how he needs to frame his shots so that no essential information will be cut out of the frame. The shots are then composed for the 2.35:1 aspect ratio.

There might be an inate perceptual advantage too, but I'm not sure if this has been tested.

It has to do with a human eye's visual field of view (FOV). The widescreen format caters more to an eye's FOV than does a 4:3 aspect ratio. While a 4:3 ratio provides less than 1/100th of an eye's FOV, a 16:9 format provides about 1/20th.

    From DVDDemystified:

Many people complain that the audio level from DVD players is too low. In truth the audio level is too high on everything else. Movie soundtracks are extremely dynamic, ranging from near silence to intense explosions. In order to support an increased dynamic range and hit peaks (near the 2V RMS limit) without distortion, the average sound volume must be lower. This is why the line level from DVD players is lower than from almost all other sources. So far, unlike on CDs and LDs, the level is much more consistent between discs. If the change in volume when switching between DVD and other audio sources is annoying, you may be able to adjust the output signal level on some players or the input signal level on some receivers, but other than that, there's not much you can do.
