  1. john wall's in it just for the money on Windows Vista Faces Lawsuits · · Score: 2, Informative

i found an interesting article on john wall and vista and his product:
    http://www.threenorth.com/sco/john_wall.html

    23 April 2005

It seems that John Wall is selling Vista.com. Well, sort of selling it

after reading that, i don't feel sorry for this john wall guy at all.

many of you may be microsoft bashers, and maybe rightfully so. but to be illogical and say john wall deserves this payment just because you dislike microsoft is just wrong.

if microsoft was wrong, i'd say they are. but this case is pretty clear that vista does not deserve a single penny.

i skimmed through the article, but who is to say they didn't. microsoft has a team of lawyers broken up into groups, and one of them specifically takes care of copyright, patent, trademark issues. i'm pretty sure they've done their homework and realiazed that their product has nothing to compete against this 'vista' tech company.

i mean, it's just as absurb as tigerdirect for suing apple for using tiger as ther os name. i mean if this 'vista' tech company wrote a operating system called vista, then i can see why they'd be suing. but this is probably another case of i'm scared my google ranking will drop.

  4. how will yahoo maps and mapquest compete? on Google Offers Hybrid Satellite and Map View · · Score: 1

google map has a way nicer interface than any of the 2 leading/competiting map websites. i haven't seen yahoo maps or mapquest introduce much more features to their mapping software. though the other software do allow searching for hotels, restaurants, airports, shopping, travel, entertainment and etc. but those are just a database of locations which is easily implemented. the interface of google maps was the hard part.

though froogle is nice, it's pretty hard to find deals on it. most times, prices on pricewatch or other price search engines would return the same product at cheaper prices.

of course what froogle does is automated by scanning websites, but it's far from competing against it's rivals at the moment. i'd say at least a few years worth. a lot of refining work on their froogle engine is needed.

so how's this going to be different to you? imagine google did remove the beta word from their google maps software. would you know the difference? would it matter if it was exactly the same product that it was during beta form?

in my opinion, beta is just a term google likes to fool the public with. if something is truly beta, you have 'beta' testers which usually are a select group to test out the product before releasing to the general public. this is usually a process to find bugs and etc. google has made the ENTIRE WORLD their beta testers, which i don't really mind, but final question that i want to ask you is how is sticking the word 'beta' or removing it from their products going to be any difference to you.

i can see why you'd complain if it wasn't release to the general public, while beta users reaped all the usefulness. sorta like how people felt when only a select few got 1gb gmail accounts. gmail was in beta, and people were fighting to get accounts paying over $50 for 1 account. i could see why you'd want to see gmail go outta beta just for that reason. but google maps doesn't require subscription fees, no one has exclusive access, and it works beautifully.

in fact, as someone else mention, google beta products are AD free!

there's several points i would like to refute.

There is no way to bring down the whole phone network just by dialing the wrong number or saying the wrong thing into it.

u cant take down the whole internet just by connecting to some website or crashing particular servers either. what you can do is take down particular servers which might cause paths to be re-routed, but still the internet holds. to take down the entire internet would require synchronized attacks on all or most major backbones which you would probably have to do to take down the telephone network too. to take down a particular telephone portal is as easy as cutting some wires. though you may be right about dialing wrong #s and saying stuff won't crash a telephone network, but we can still DDOS by having a whole bunch of people try to use the telephone network at once and just clog the network.

but we don't log in to our telephones, we just dial

many computers don't require login to get onto the machine. though it may be a security concern, many people i would say don't have a login to start their OS, since many people are probably using windows xp w/o multiple users set up. you just bootup your computer and wala, everything's there. you can even log onto an unsecure wifi connection w/o any login info. but just like when you try to access your credit card account through the telephone, they'll ask for your credit card # and your ssn or other info which is basically the login screen to your credit card website.

  23. why hp cartridges are so expensive on HP Invents A New Way To Print · · Score: 1

i've always purchased epson printers because of the fact that epson ink is basically bottles of ink. hp puts the printer head on the cartridges themselves making them very expensive and hard to buy generics. when i was able to buy generic epson color ink for $3, hp ink no matter generic or not was $15 or more.

epson however later got smart and started installing chips verifying that this is indeed genuine epson ink, only to find out later that their chip system was easily programmable. it made the generic inks go up, but not by much.

saying hp invents a new way to print by saying hp is now starting to use printer heads inside the printer is like saying windows invents a new interface by introducing transparency.
