This system only really works with small files (ie. text documents, small images, config files.. not really recommended for MP3s and divxs, or your 1gig outlook.pst file) Have a script that runs overnight, that zips/tars up all the relevant files with as much encryption/password as required. At work, have a script on your machine that ftp's in to your home ftp server and downloads the zip file. Rename it to something un-obvious (ie. sysconfig.dat) and puts it on your personal file share on the server. Work takes care of everything from then onwards! No need to hassle yourself with tape rotation, off-site backups (although you technically already have at least one off-site backup, you get more thrown in for free by your employer!)
As is often pointed out here, the average member of the public is unaware that there are alternatives to Windows, they consider it a natural artifact needed to make an operational computer, if they think about it as an object at all.
Not related to computers in movies, but this reminds me of the time a client had a cordless optical mouse that would NOT work with XP on her laptop, no matter what we did, and when we told her...
"What rubbish! It HAS to work with Windows XP or else they wouldn't be allowed to sell it!"
I wanted to tell her where to go.. but you know, customers and all..
How come people from outside Australia have only heard of the SHIT Aussie music? (assuming the AC who posted this isn't from Aus; otherwise you just have shit taste or listen to commercial radio too much)
If you want to expand your Oz music horizons - look up any of the following:
Screamfeeder; Beautiful Girls; The Living End; You Am I; Resin Dogs; Something For Kate; Magic Dirt; Gerling; Nick Cave; Butterfly Effect; Grinspoon; Powderfinger; Biftek; The Fergussons; Andromeda; The Superjesus; Frenzal Rhomb; The Hurd; Alex Lloyd; Gus & Frank; The Waifs; Bodyjar; 1200 Techniques; Sekiden; Machine Gun Fellatio; Jet; 28 Days; Eskimo Joe; The Vines; Pacifier.
You probably won't like them all, but there is a bit of a range there.
And if you are after Australian bands that sing about wanking, The Fauves' 'Self Abuser' is another one.
This might not technically be the best solution - but here is what I do:
Motherboards - in an antistatic bag, each one in a box, on the shelf. Memory - in antistatic bags, all in one small box, on the shelf. Expansion cards - in antistatic bags, on the shelf (stored vertically, like books) Hard drives - in HD plastic shells, stacked up, on the shelf. CD/FD drives - stacked on top of each other, on the shelf.
Just thought I would throw in a quick plug for m0n0wall, a linux based firewall that I use.. it is 5mb in size and can run from a HD, an CD and FD combo, or a CF card. With a nice looking web based front end. Also has support for NAT, wireless, a DHCP server, ummm lots of other stuff. m0n0wall site is here if you want more info.
It seems that CF cards are the next thing for the mini-OS's at the moment. Quiet, low power, starting at around 3x the cost of a FDD for about 50 times the space (64mb card).
I just heard some sad news on talk radio - GIF patent US4,558,302 was found expired in its patent office filing cabinet this morning. There weren't any more details. I'm sure everyone in the internet community will miss it - even if you didn't enjoy the litigation, there's no denying its contribution to bandwidth conservation. Truly a compression icon.
Note: I can not take credit for this, i read it on kuro5hin.. I thought it was amusing!
You know, this is a really nerdy thing to say, but I'm going to anyway..
Its odd how the US has 50 states and has a 2 letter code for each one. However Australia only has 8 such areas (6 states and 2 territories) but we commonly use 3 digit abbreviations. Even if we wanted to only used 1 digit per state, we couldn't do it:
Q=Queensland V=Victoria T=Tasmania S=South Australia W=Western Australia ('A' couldn't be used here as it wouldn't be obvious which it was).
This leaves Australian Capital Territory, New South Wales, and Northern Territory.
ACT=A or C (T taken) NSW=N (S and W taken) NT=? (N and T both taken)
Just goes to show those silly fuckers who named our states didn't take minimising field sizes into account!
For non-postal type data stores that want to minimise the space taken but still make it human readable, the usual fix is to go by capital cities initials (A, B, C, D, H, M, P, S), radio callsign prefixes (easy, 1-8) or simply call Northern Territory "D" (for its capital, Darwin.)
See, I told you this would be a pretty nerdy post (even for slashdot)
Having TWO BEERS? Do you have a blood alcohol limit of 0 or something? In Australia it is 0.05 where I am, I think other parts of the country may be 0.02 or 0.08 depending on a few factors (state, age, years driving, etc). 0.05 equates to about three beers in one hour, for a male, or so the ads would have you believe, of course it varies depending on your weight/metabolism etc.
Does anyone else think www.seventeenorbust.com sounds like a porn site?
Somehow, I don't think many defense contractors would want to hire someone who intends to win the Nobel Peace prize.
I'm surprised that no-one has pointed out who the nobel prize is named after and what he invented.
You think thats a coincidence? We have Australia trolls who proclaim to be members of the AGNA ...
1. Put a sheet of stickers in your printer
2. Press print
Oh ok then, if you insist...
3. ???
4. Profit

What about skipping commercials on a TV show recording to video (or PVR, etc), vs skipping commercials on a DVD that you have paid for?

Thats because he's a peanut.
Of course not. Thats disgusting.
He only has sex with sheep. (well, his inflatable "love ewe" which he claims is unused.)
..and when a Victorian says something good about Tasmania, you know it must be bloody good!

Redundant??? Someone hasn't seen Office Space. Redundancy is the *point* of the TPS report memo joke :P
Atlanta winter olympics? You total peanut!!
"like rain, on your wedding day" - no it's not ironic you moron. It might be if you were marrying a meteorologist, otherwise it's just bad luck.
What about if you were marrying a meteorologist and it was he/she who chose that particular date?
It is too [FreeBSD based].. I should have known that.. well I did, but I got it wrong :P

300 degrees kelvin sounds pretty much like room temperature to me, as it would be in most of the inhabited world!

You paid $50 for three DVDs in Malaysia? Were you wearing a T-shirt that said "I'm a tourist" or something?
This one does.

The AC who posted may not read this comment, but if you do... did your brother & his wife consider taking his wifes name?
Now we just have to see if Hobart will get it in 2005 or not! I don't know how likely it is - TasLUG isn't dead, but it's not massively active.
However we are getting the Annual SAGE-AU Conference this year (it took us until year number 11!).
