    You may not be aware of it but Linux outperforms Windows on any platform, 88.6% of the top 500 computers in the world run Linux (June 2009).

    40 years ago astronauts (and for that matter cosmonauts too) were test pilots which knew that the possibility (or risk) of dying was a part of their daily job.
    It was first after the Apollo disaster that dying on the job became politically incorrect... very much because of the media coverage.

    Nope, he is asking whether he should trust a software RAID for data protection...
    ...and no, he should not. RAID (both software and hardwar, all RAID levels except 0) are about minimizing downtime and not about protecting data.

    In fact people don't run screaming back to their loved Windows when presented with a better solution...
    We replaced 70 % of our laptops with MacBook Pro's and 95 % of the new Mac users are not interested in running Windows.
    I'm quite sure we could have given them OpenSuSE or Ubuntu and they would have been as happy with it as they are with OS X... why ? because people are sick'n'tired of Windows, they want something that "simply works".

    AFAIK the new MacBookPro got 8 hours af battery life running OS X...
    ...and my Lenovo runs usually 1 hour longer on battery in Linux (SuSE 10.3) than on Windows.
    I vould split the requirement and get cheap small netbooks with SSD (like the EeePC 901) for communication and separate machines for the recording operation.
    ...and remember to think about how to get power for the equipment, batteries need to be charged.

    I think for now, many companies are perfectly ok with air cooling solutions.
    Yes, yes we are... but there are a lot of new environment-aware politicians and they will start making rules (aka. laws) as soon they realize how much energy we use just to keep our servers cool.
    We may wait for them to make rules or we can buy new watercooled servers from IBM and reuse the energy to heat our building or to heat the corporate pool (that has been done when we used mainframes).

    For the most part, a job is nothing more than a means to make money.
    Some of us have made our hobby our work... so we are doing exactly what we like and we have fun working.

    When you sell yourself to a megacorp you end with a contract saying that you are not allowed to do whatever you are doing if you quit the magacorp for some 3, 5 or even 10 years after you quit, that is std. procedure.

    Actually we do not have a 160 char limit... that is the limit for a single SMS, most phones can send (and receive) up to 600 char SMS by sending more than one message.
    ...and most places in the world a SMS is far cheaper than an email unless you are on an flat rate UMTS network (which is what they use in Japan).

    This is exactly the same problem that was fixed by the 747, just remove the word "supersonic".
    If you belive that a problem can't be solved then you will not be able to find a solution for it.

    The only problem in supersonic flight which isn't easy solvable is the noise.

    ...mythology, in our case it started with nordic but we are now advancing to roman and greek. Heimdahl beeing the gatekeeper is the firewall and Kraken is of course the proxy server (running squid).
    Upper management does not care about server names, that is not their job. Middle bosses do however care about server names and they usually like "intelligent" and "descriptive" names, like V-CTX-01 for the first Virtual CiTriX server.

    Nope... he has now been elected and everyone know that the US Gov. is running exclusivly on the Microsoft platform so Secret Service has locked his Apple stuff away and given him some MS stuff instead (Marked with the seal of the President of the United States just below the Microsoft logo of course). -- The Truth is out there... somewhere.
