I can understand that writers are worried about this new threat.
Now millions of people can easily get books for free without paying anything for them.
It's like a gigantic library of free books!! Nobody will buy books if they can get them from a library, right?
The conspiracy theory about open source on the other hand, is just to stupid to comment on.
Hey! To all you people who fell for this scam, you too can search Google for information about a company before you buy, I can send you an "Advanced Google Trainer CD" for free*!!!!!
They use a software called MAS from a company called 3AMI (3AMI.com) I personally think it's a bad idea though to use propriatary software that doesn't even specify what level of security it practices between client and server. (oh nevermind, it requires a "password", it must be secure)
Some documentation would be nice.
The Norwegian Data Inspectorate (datatilsynet) is not to happy about their trials though.
Many users of pirated programs often seem to use these programs because they are expensive and give them a feeling of getting a Hummer for free. I bet a lot of them are also in it for the thrill, they like to feel a bit naughty. So when you offer them a Toyota Prius for free, they're thinking; "I've got this Hummer, it gives me status among my peers, you're offering this car to me for free? That's not naughty at all!"
So they pass on the enviromentaly freindly jap, and continue to use the gas gusteling brute. Pah, Windows users polute!
If they sent it out as a normal update, people could choose to ignore it. As a servicepack they can set it as a requirement for future security updates. This is just what they did with SP1 & 2, only this time without any added features for the user.
the tribal people beeing pissed about having to actually pay money for something they used to get for free. I
belive it will be easier to get easy access to pirated versions of english and spanish windows versions, now they suddently have to pay for it? AND IT'S NOT THE PROFFESSIONAL EDITION?
I know how bad things are here in Norway, and people here can easily afford to pay for a version of Windows.
call me pretencious (I am sure I did not spell that correctly, and I hope it means what i think it means) But what if these people can not afford to buy the new windows version? I probably would know more about this if i bothered to RTFA (there, now even I have said RTFA, I am so hip)
seeing as this is targeted at developing countries, I very much doubt that people will be able to "take it out" with exploding bullets and such. These people are lucky if they can afford a decent rock to throw at it.
Convert your CD collection to Flac and you would end up with a few years less of music, it would on the otherhand sound great! Throw out that old Ipod video and exchange it for a 60 GB Iaudio flac compatible player, then we are talking!
Has anyone considered that he did not have the files to begin with? and that he might not have deleted any files at all?
Police: "Give us your laptop, we belive that there is incriminating evidence on it!"
Accused: "eh, here is my laptop, but I swear I do not kno..."
Police "Be quiet scoundral, now let us see, It appears that we can not find the Weapons of Mass distructio.. Eh... incriminating evidence. So clearly YOU HAVE DELETED THEM!"
Accused: "I do not know what you are looking for, but I mostly use pen and paper to write down things, so I really doubt..."
Police: "I have the right for you to remain silent! Save it for the judge Bucko!!"
Her Dell is saying he thinks the Linux community needs a standard core, and you suggest that he should make a new distro... well, I that is a large part of the problem....
Dell (inc) does not need to chose any distro, let the distros them selves do what they allready do best, and let dell build computers and make demands that suppliers make OS drivers. There really is only one kernel in the Linux OS, so supporting OSDL and contributing drivers would be plenty.
If you imagine a future 3d desktop as a box, then you can allways just use the input device we use now. the scroll wheel can be used for zomm, or for changing the angle of its direction. A 3d interface doesn't need a 3d input device.
Personally I'm waiting for the screen they use in minority report, but I also liked the desk in the island; the desktop is the desktop. That is kind of cool.
The internet and the PC is not really that old, and before them you did not need that many programmers. So I think old programmers never really existed in the first place. With all the new it-companys you probably need them all for management, and then you probably have a great deal of them who lost interest once they had to move from punchcards to a personal workstation...
Giving something away below cost in order to crush competition?
...And their competitors are doing what?
What is the cost of software anyways? The law was probably invented to stop people from giving away baked beans to crush their competitors. Baked beans have a "per can" production cost, baked beans can not be copied without some kind of loss in quality.
Qualifying the reason I switched back is harder. I had an interview with Microsoft in 2001
MSguy:We just have one final question; Have you ever tried Linux?
Dink:Yes, in fact I use it allmost exclusively!
MSguy2: *caugh*loser*caugh*
MSguy: Sorry, we can not employ people who are potentially violating SCO IP
Dink:Oh my, I had no idea, I'll change!! Can I not just quit using linux?
MSguy2:Yeah, like we have a six month quarrantine or something
Dink:I'll download a Windows copy today, I swear!!!
unless you have a collection with a strict size that is. I am guessing that your collection will grow beyond the 100gb by the time apple releases an 100gb ipod. My prediction is that a 20 gb ipod nano will start replacing the original by late next year.
Developers do not use servers to program on, linux might mainly be developed for servers, but not on servers. Also, new users do not try Linux on servers the first time around.
And why would you not want to replace windows and os-x with Linux? I Like it on my desktop. Linux and more users equals more developers equals better OS for me.
Oh, but one can: http://slideme.org/application/i-am-rich

Will firefox get the prime position?
Next time you should replace 4999 of those hours with a simple BASH script.
People seem to be unaware of a computers ability to do repetitive tasks, and instead get people to do it manually.
Go out on the street.
This wouldn't really be fair to us Linux users though....
we don't spend much of our time out in the sun
The truth is, few people will be likely to order it once Windows 7 is available.
The truth is, few people would be likely to order it if Windows XP was available.

The reason for it is easy:
If they sent it out as a normal update, people could choose to ignore it. As a servicepack they can set it as a requirement for future security updates. This is just what they did with SP1 & 2, only this time without any added features for the user.
Also: they really have to sell Vista...

Seems like the only way to get a laptop that is built to run Linux on is to build one yourself...

Phantom!! Get it? Such a great pun would guarantee more widespread use:)
