Compiz is just a compositing manager. As I understand it, it exists independently of Metacity or any other window manager you choose to use. Compiz should be similar in functionality to xcompmgr or the compositing manager built into xfwm. I don't think it will require shortcuts or much hackery to function on non-GNOME desktops.
The window manager demoed appears to be Metacity, and as such, I can't see why Novell would be pushing for even more fragmentation in the Linux world. If anything, they would be in favor of easy-to-use interfaces that will serve to promote their Novell Linux Desktop 10 product, or whatever it will be called. Indirectly, that benefits us, and you as the non-GNOME user.
Sure, check out http://plasma.kde.org/ for their project overview. Basically it's an umbrella project for better human interface and eye candy for the KDE project. It involves a community re-write of portions of the KDE libraries, and is already quite far along. Check out the link http://plasma.kde.org/cms/1069 for a neat looking mockup of some proposed functionality.
The best so far would be the radeon 9250, which is the most recent card supported by the current (open source) x.org "radeon" driver, and has EXA acceleration in the just-released 6.9/7.0 version.
There's no need to worry about throwing your books away! The publishers will just do a simple find/replace for "spiral" and slap another edition revision on there. Update the front cover and BAM, University students the world over feel the impact of this new discovery.
I find the opposite as well. I work in a shipping warehouse (where I'm currently reading Slashdot, hoho!) and I deal with Fedex DHL and UPS on a regular basis. Fedex consistently delivers packages without damage, and because of the fragile nature of most of our inventory, we ship with them. UPS packages frequently arrive dirty hole-punched, with damaged goods inside. I had a friend work for UPS and the loading workers actually get a kick out of seeing how badly they can beat the boxes up without damage.

Thank you for clearing that up dsd, I appreciate it. The installer seems like a nice tool to have for generic installations, but I wonder how it handles more abstract cases like RAID and NFS mounted stuff. In any case, I haven't had to install Gentoo in quite some time, but any way to make it easier on new users is appreciated. Lord knows there is an abundancy of installation questions in #gentoo on FreeNode, and not enough people to field them all at once.
There seems to be an obvious mismatch between the summary, which states that the release includes the long-awaited (is it really?) graphical installer, and the article which says that the installer is not included. What gives?
I wonder if it includes any special sections on the FF series from SquareSoft. I grew up on those games (on all the various platforms) and I know Japan had a handful that were never released in the U.S. Not that anyone will flame me over my choice (unless truly fanatical), but I think FF7 is the best game to come out on the Playstation, if not all the 3rd-gen and onward video game systems.
It's fairly standard practice among the DSL providers, at least here in California. My cousin got SBC DSL and I set it up for her. I was pleased that WEP was enabled by default (I would have preferred WPA but I doubt that anyone will be going after her with the 20 unprotected APs in her college apartment complex).
I can predict with reasonable certainty which professors will be in which classrooms, on which days and at what times. I bet I could even tell you what they're talking about!
What covert application would I use? The MIT Fall 2005 class schedule of course!
A silly example, but it's rather surprising what sort of information you can dig up in most schools' student and faculty directories! My school was even using SSNs for student IDs until they realized that was dumb (seemed obvious enough to the students but not to the administration).

Awww, baby want tissue for cry? Elitist Slashdot bitching is about as boring and been-there-done-that as Zonk's supposed bargain bin news items. Submit a few good stories and perhaps you will feel better about your time spent her on the good 'ole intarweb.

Will the Windows sounds be included in the RIAA John Doe lawsuits? I'd hate to be taken to court for beep.wav.

Interesting article. I was especially intrigued by the "Compact Dick Recordable" format. When will those new burners be hitting the market?
A monkey with five asses!
Awww, now I got honey all over my legs!

Remember the Jaguar controller? That beastly thing had so many buttons it made my keyboard jealous.

And they will.

#3 being the superior combination.
A chance to combine "I for one welcome our new * * overlords" with "in South Korea, only old people * *"
