True- but 480x480 is. So saying that Windows Mobile won't 'support the sharper image' is fallacious- windows supports a sharper image, Palm just chose not to put it in.
Yes. You missed this.
The letter arrived at the busiest time of the year for the schools, as they were gearing up for the close of the spring semester. And because PPS has 25,000 computers spread across 100 buildings, completing the audit on time would have required hiring extra personnel, at a total cost of around $300,000, Robinson says. Microsoft's licensing agreements offer to send out auditors, but the audit cost would fall to the district if company auditors uncovered any undocumented software, he says.
Basically, Microsoft was well within their rights. The school district, on the other hand, was scared that they weren't up to spec, and so inflicted this cost upon themselves. Microsoft offered them auditors, at what is apaprently NO cost to that school district if nothing is found.
Exactly, where's the problem?
I know you're not the first nor the last one to say this, but I find it fascinating that it's the prevelant view. That for some reason paper books are better. i've almost entirely stopped reading paper books. The screen on my imate jasjar is backlit, has high resolution, allows for annotation, I just click with my thumb to the turn the pages, and it's very, very easy on my eyes. Much more so than having to squint against whatever light happens to be present whereever I am.
It's just easier to read e-books, and, even though I have a library of some 5500 paper books, I really only read ebooks anymore.
A 1U server like mine has exactly 1 PCI slot, occupied by a graphics card. Moreover, the previous computer didn't have a seperate soundcard- it was onboard.
Good idea, though.
Yes, it is loud as hell. I throttle the CPU to 15 percent load, max, when I'm not actively playing games or something else that needs it, because that keeps the fans spun down to their minimum load. It was actually a really bad decision to buy this PC. (Dell SC1425). At the time, it was a good idea, but then my needs changed... and now I'm stuck with a loud as hell server in my room. Luckily, I have long cables, and it's in what amounts to a closet. (with proper airflow of course, but it dampens the sound significantly)
Thank you! You've exactly summarized my problem.
in point of fact, the PCs are right beside each other, and the sound system is similarly positional no matter which PC i'm using. VNC and mapped network drives DO already stream my music, as you can probably imagine.
You're right- I've loaded Ubuntu on a handful of PCs. Thing is, they can't really compare for gaming (which is what my server is for, among other things.)
The other solution that a friend proposed is a permanent terminal services connection. I like this, because it has the Terminal Services Audio Redirector thingy. That's great... except I can't use double-headed monitors, or games, watching movies, or anything else.
What I really use as a stopgap is a bluetooth heatset attached to my logitech bluetooth desktop. It's okay, but if I'm not wearing the earpiece, I don't get the sounds. So kind of sucky.
Anyway, yes! You nailed the problem on the head. (Too bad you didn't have a solution, but we can't get everything!)
No, I do want to stream all audio. What I have now is VNC, and a mapped network drive (mapping the music folder on my main desktop to a Z drive on my media center PC) that allows me to remotely change songs/etc that I'm playing on the Media Center PC. It's not a perfect solution, but it actually works quite well for me.
Latency isn't really a big issue- I'm looking more for things like IM alerts, mail sounds, stuff like that. Plus, it's all gigabit wired, so I have no bandwidth issues either. (Not that I'd expect them with 100mb wiring either, frankly).
Fascinating, thanks! It doesn't sound perfect, but something I can probably twist to my own ends.
As to your last point, that's pretty much exactly what I need it for. it's a shame VNC doesn't support audio. (Or at least, I haven't been able to find a server/client that does.)
Anyway, I will fiddle with your suggestions.
Thanks.
I've already done that. I'm talking about audio streams for which that's not possible- like for example the streaming audio that games put out, or the sounds that gaim makes when a new message comes in.
That's very interesting- unfortunately it says it requires a working audio device, and I don't have one- there's no audio drivers, no sound card, no nothing. The only audio I have is the terminal-services sound redirector. (which is great for everything except gaming and multiple-displays- the two of the things I use that PC for almost 100 percent of the time.)
This is slightly off topic, but just the other day I submitted an ask slashdot asking how it might be possible to stream my entire audio session from one PC to another. My main desktop has no soundcard, no space to put one, and no speakers; my Media center PC has all of those, but I don't use it as my main PC. I'm looking for a solution that will allow me to stream the audio from my main desktop to my Media Center and play it there. (They're in the same room, just beside each other, for intrests sake)
Any ideasd?
I only skimmed TFA, but why are they using Microsoft's Express Beta version? rather than SQL Server Standard edition?
Kind of rigged, ne? Plus, it's a beta! Come on!
I know it's microsoft, and this is slashdot, but please!
It's interesting... in Keegstra and Butler, they upheld that both free speech and pornography were justifiable free speech under the Charter. In Butler, the supreme court ruled that pornography (like hate speech), attempts to convey meaning- the meaning may be distasteful to many, but was, infact, present.
build it on land ABOVE SEA LEVEL. Who's stupid idea was to build it below sea level? If the area is really so heavily damaged, re-build elsewhere, maybe about 35 km to the north-west. Yes, it will be a massive undertaking. But hell, isn't it already?
Well, for starters, I've got my main machine;
3.2 Ghz Xeon, 1 GB RAM, 2x GbE, 40 GB SATA, 128 MB PCI-Express graphics.
A handful of laptops (3), Athlons from 2100 through to 3000+,
A larger handful of desktops, everything from a PIII 1.0 GHz to Athlon 2600+ to PIV 2.8s. (We've got about twelve of those.)
Roles?
VPN/ISA/Router, Asterisk server, file servers, streaming media servers, Windows MCE servers... everything a geek could ask for. GbE backbone, with wireless- everything using IPSEC, of course, and AES WPA.
In a perfect world, we'd run perfect software. We're not in a perfect world, and most of it uses MS software, so lets patch the holes with the tools we're given.
If everyone on the road drives a ford, and fords have X mechanical problem, do you tell people how to fix the problem, or do you tell them to buy a toyota? I mean, be reasonable. maybe NEXT time they'll buy a toyota, but for now, they've GOT a ford.

Plus, any star trek fan will tell you that the corridors are way too tall. They should end just above the doors, not way up there.

I agree- something like the HTC Universal, or iMate Jasjar, or XDA professional, or whatever they're calling it these days.

Maybe the camera's not working right?
It obviously requires an identity layer? News to me. As a card-carrying member of the tinfoil hat brigade, I prefer anonimity.
The perfect place to post your question. I do hope you have abestos gloves on!

is always a good bet.
present your own report, detailing those same holes and why it's not worth it to fix them. Preferably first.
ARGH! What's wrong with spell check, damn it, that the editors seem to have misplaced it!?
