Lots of musicians mute their speakers when they're not recording. After all, do you really want to hear someone's MySpace music on thousand dollar speakers?
They also tend to mute all application sounds, as it's really annoying to be paying attention to some very delicate section in a track only to have an alert sound blow your ears out.
I also keep my speakers muted during reboots to avoid that Mac bootup sound. It tends to also be painful through said large speakers.
A MacTel that I don't mind shelling out $$ for!
I've been spoiled by my 17" G4, so the thought of downsizing, losing my FW800, and doing withouth DVD-DL was too much. I guess it's time to start saving up.
Maybe by the time I have the $3000+ they'll have come out with a convertible tablet model... but I won't hold my breath.
Why? Because now we can finally talk our bosses into buying us Macs for work, instead of having to sneak in our PowerBooks! After all, the guy who started the contest did so after he convinced his boss to buy him an Intel Mac. How did he do it? He said "Oh yeah, it'll boot Windows too". (paraphrase)
I repeat the previous sentiments: buying property on eBay w/o escrow, what are they thinking?
I do web work for a realtor who sometimes sells commercial properties (apartments etc.) to clients who've never seen what they're buying in person. Then again, he's with one of the larger agencies and does the actual purchase through traditional channels.
Plus, with the virtual walkthroughs I'm doing, the client has a pretty good idea of what they're buying beforehand. So yes, buying properties "online" is possible, but the client needs to use their brains a bit when choosing who they work with.
Wow, would you really want to see Katamari in hi-def? What an acid trip that would be....on second thought, who wouldn't want to see it in hi-def? Such an addictive little game!
Hey, thanks for the link! I think I'll be getting a FRAG next paycheck.
What pisses me off about the Halo button layouts is that you have to take your thumb off the direction controls in order to jump or melee. How lame is that?
I've tried using "alternate" controls and layouts, but man do they all suck. Too bad my computer isn't up to par for Quake 4 or I'd ditch Halo in a second.
This Mac zealot doesn't use a mouse. I use a trackball;-)
The reason Apple stays with the one-button design... those optical bluetooth mice look cooler with their "butonless" look.
Sometimes they do go for form over function, but that's why Logitech is around.
Finally someone who isn't too high from their overclocked AMD's fumes to realize how outdated X is.
Something of this magnitude would probably require cooperation from all the big-name vendors, otherwise we'd have 50 forks of the same code because one guy wanted purple icons and the other wanted green.
Sadly, they've all put their resources into adding more bloat to GNOME... the equivalent of painting your AMC Gremlin and hoping it'll turn into a Lexus.
Unless there's a GUI-obsessed Linus clone out there, we're probably stuck with X for quite some time.
Actually I'm a Linux zealot who hates X. Since no good replacement is in sight, I just made a compromise with Steve and keep a Mac on my desk.
Coke makes me too paranoid, so I don't mind giving him my share. And since OS X is still cheaper than Windows I have enough spare $$ leftover for hookers. Plus, since I'm not having to configure infinite config files (on the desktops at least), I can spend a little more time with them!
Actually it's not too bad of a business model if you think about it. You're not paying for the OS, since Darwin is OSS. You're paying for Apple to make a coherent experience for your desktop users.
I'd pay Redhat/Novell/Sun/etc. a little $$ if they could work together as nicely as Apple does. Then maybe I could finally get our entire shop running the same OS. Until then, I'll have to settle for Linux on the servers, Windows on the desktop, and my little Mac for me.
Wow, so in five years maybe X will have half the features OS X had 2 years ago!...only minus the standard interface design that makes sure "preferences" is always in the same place.
I mean, seriously, how long have they been showing off E17? And isn't it odd how E14 had cooler themes than E17 (which just looks like MetaCity with cool FX)?
When will the *nix community catch a clue and go the OS X route: Write a coherent, well thought out UI that takes advantage of all our 3d chips... and throw an X server in just for backwards compatibility.
Oh wait, wasn't that supposed to be Fresco? Too bad it went the way of the dodo. Apple created Aqua by souping up the Display Postscript in NextStep. Maybe the *nix world can write a new UI by souping up the Display Postscript in NeWS?
On a positive note, Looking Glass does look rather promising.
Usually, this is the point where someone jumps up and yells "Photoshop runs on Macs - and Mac OSX is UNIX!" That's true, but it doesn't count. Photoshop was coded to the MacIntosh user interface, not X-windows...
Apple's Strategy For Unix Migration:
Dump X-Windows
Dump X-Windows
You'd think the rest of us would catch on right? Make a decent GUI system that doesn't blow goats, and then all the various 'nix flavors can put the config files etc. wherever they please, as long as the GUI config tools know where they are. (and no, GNOME/KDE don't count, they still blow in comparison to OS X/Win32 interfaces... at least in terms of consistency)
As a rabid Apple whore, I still have to wonder what the hell they were thinking when they developed this things:
(Jobs) How can we make our iPods cheaper?
(Engrs) Well, we've already taken out everything but the screen.
(Jobs) Then take it out too!
(Engrs) But how will they select their songs?
(Jobs) Who cares? We'll have PR come up with a snappy name and tell everyone it's COOL.
Those Cupertino boys, I swear.

Crap! I'm eating Fritos right now. Maybe that's why my g/f is sitting on the other end of the couch.
Oh I dunno, how about that little site called Yahoo?

My girlfriend has no problems playing Halo with me. Sometimes she even lets me win!
Hey, maybe now everyone in my family won't complain when I dump in the cayenne pepper into all my dishes!

And (log n) points to you for being quite possibly the most sarcastic person on /.
My hat's off to ya!
