Corporate entities do have characters, be they corporations or states. New Englanders are very different from southerners in the US, and from Californians, too. The English, French, Russians, etc have different national characters. That is a corporate character flaw in my book. (YMMV) I took my money elsewhere till it changed.

Good point. I had no trouble installing and using the 4.8, 4.9 and 4.10 Free BSD O/S. It was for personal use & just to see... Never could get a functioning system out of the 5.x series. It is silly for FreeBSD to be getting harder to istall while Debian has gotten trivially easy.
However, PC-BSD works quite well, but with limited software installation, unless one goes to the ports. The base is OK for someone who just wants to surf and e-mail. Getting OO installed is trickier. It got a good review from Dru Lavigne also here. There's a fresh beta, 0.8 just released.
There's also Desktop BSD over here, which I have not tried as there seem to be problems with installation on boxes with an Athlon CPU. When they get that fixed... we'll see.
I, too,read stories about about schools being hammered by licensing disputes with MS. Assuming you are correct about MS bending over backwards for schools [frankly, the mind boggles], is it not to poison minds early? Their free product worked fine for me till I got tired of nursemaiding Windows. In fact if I can't avoid buying a box with Windoomed on it, or had to dual-boot, I'd be happy to use AVG. I think I saw their professional product on a store shelf recently.

The "best" estimate I've sween is about 200 ft, could be upwards of 250 ft. North Florida would be reduced to an island or two-if that.
