I agree with you, direct corporation between the affected states is the better solution than to add more responsibility to the EU bureaucracy in its current state.

  2. Re:midnight on Germany Sets New Solar Power Record · · Score: 2

That's not the problem since the consumption is low then.
The problem will be in the winter months in the morning and the evening, when the sun isn't shining and electric heating is running in some places. Well, last winter showed that this mostly becomes a problem in France, since they get power from Germany at these times, and use a lot of electric heating because of the low state-controlled electricity prices.
While I am ok with the switch to solar power in principle, it just does not work that easily with this high percentage of solar power, as the article claims. It only works without lots of new storage capacities because of the electricity exchange between the European countries. But the same is true for the high percentage of French nuclear power. While they generally export a lot of cheap nuclear power, they don't have the capacities to meet their peak demand.
The power network of Europe only work as a whole, which is why the switch to green energies better would have been organized on the level of the EU.

The German pirate party is very fast on discussing these general topics though. I am sure they already have a position on Syria.
Everyone in the party can take part in these discussions. That is why it takes some time until they have a position. Also, you have to give them credit for their openness and honesty. A politician from another party probably would just lie.
Personally I don't like this desire to have an opinion on everything. If they take part in the government, they will have a coalition partner. Then they can only accomplish some of their goals anyway. They should stick to the important stuff from the beginning, the rest is just distraction.

  6. In Germany ... on SFPD Breathalyzer Mistake Puts Hundreds of DUI Convictions In Doubt · · Score: 1

In Germany there is no conviction without a blood test. Breath analyzers are seen as way too inaccurate to base a conviction on them alone. You will get very high values after using an alcohol-containing mouthspray, and remaining alcohol in the mouth from drinking shortly before also has a strong influence. But even without that the breath alcohol concentration can differ from the blood concentration.

  9. Re:Sigh on NASA Studying Solar Powered "Space Tugboat" · · Score: 2

Why are you so negative about reducing the cost of transfers to GEO?
The same Atlas V can transport about 5 times as much to LEO as it can transport to GEO. A space tug could transport a satellite from LEO to GEO. The cost for this is mostly in bringing the tugboat into space. Since the ion drive needs only small amounts of propellant the running cost is pretty low.
The tugboat reduces the cost of a transport to GEO to the cost for LEO (which is just 1/5th) plus the cost for the tug. This can save a lot of money, no matter what launch system is used.

I don't believe that the Iranians repainted the drone. There are scratches at the front of it that look as if it landed without gear. These scratches would have been overpainted.
To me it looks like the drone was sawed into 3 pieces and put together again with duct tape. They took it apart before presenting it, removing all the electronics and only showing the empty body.
If it was broken into 3 pieces (would it really break in such a straight way?), and then repainted, why wouldn't they assemble it properly before repainting it? I can't believe that this is the opinion of experts.
