L.A. Archdiocese to Pay $600M to Victims
LOS ANGELES (AP) -- The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles will settle its clergy abuse cases for at least $600 million, by far the largest payout in the church's sexual abuse scandal, The Associated Press learned Saturday.
Attorneys for the archdiocese and alleged victims are expected to announce the deal Monday, the day the first of more than 500 clergy abuse cases was scheduled for jury selection, according to two people with knowledge of the agreement. The sources spoke on condition of anonymity because the settlement had not been made public.
The archdiocese and its insurers will pay between $600 million and $650 million to about 500 plaintiffs - an average of $1.2 million to $1.3 million per person. The settlement also calls for the release of confidential priest personnel files after review by a judge assigned to oversee the litigation, the sources said.

FOREST, Ont.-The shooting death of Dudley George was not an "isolated incident," but an example of how things could go horribly wrong if Ontario doesn't improve its relationship with First Nations people, a provincial inquiry has found.
Justice Sidney Linden yesterday issued his massive report on one of the most controversial incidents in Ontario history - the occupation of Ipperwash Provincial Park by First Nations people on Sept. 4, 1995, and the killing of George by Ontario Provincial Police officer Ken Deane two days later.
"Ipperwash revealed a deep schism in Canada's relationship with aboriginal people and was symbolic of a sad history of government policies that harmed their long-term interests," Linden said after releasing his four-volume, 1,500-page report.
Linden pointed to the ongoing occupation of a housing development at Caledonia as an example of tensions involving native land claims.
"The aboriginal occupation at Caledonia proves that Ipperwash was not an isolated event," Linden said. Six Nations people began protests in Caledonia over land claims in February 2006, and the issue remains unresolved.
"Ipperwash is important because public officials and institutions need to be held accountable for their actions," Linden said.
"Unfortunately, the issues that were at the heart of the Ipperwash occupation remain to this day. This inexcusable delay and long neglect, by successive federal governments (to deal with native land claims), are at the heart of the Ipperwash story," Linden said.
Premier Dalton McGuinty quickly apologized on behalf of the provincial government. But he said he will take some time to assess Linden's recommendations, which include an independent agency to deal with land claims and a new ministry for aboriginal people.
Federal Indian Affairs Minister Jim Prentice did not issue an apology, but said the government would move quickly to give land that used to be occupied by a military base in Ipperwash Provincial Park back to the Kettle and Stony Point people. The government took it in 1942 and the occupation of the park began in September 1995 to highlight the demand for the return of the base.
"In my view, the most urgent priority is for the federal government to return the former army camp to the Kettle and Stony Point First Nation immediately with an apology and appropriate compensation," Linden said.
His comments were delivered before about 200 people at the hockey arena in this tiny community near Ipperwash Provincial Park.
Linden accused former premier Mike Harris of misleading the Legislature by repeatedly denying that he told a high-level meeting of police and government officials, "I want the f---ing Indians out of the park," hours before the massive police operation which ended in George's death.
Linden said that "after carefully assessing the evidence," it was his view Harris made the statement.
However, Linden concluded that Harris did not interfere or give inappropriate directions to the police during the operation.
Linden suggested the government's "imperative for speed" in removing the protesters from the park led to poor decisions by both the politicians and the OPP.
He said while the OPP had a "go-slow" approach, it was overruled by Harris's desire for a quick end to the occupation.
"The provincial government's imperative for a speedy conclusion to the occupation was difficult to justify by events on the ground.... There was no proven substantial risk to public safety that would justify this urgency."
In a statement, Harris expressed satisfaction that he was not accused by Linden of directing police during the late-night operation.
"I am pleased that 12 years' worth of false and politically motivated accusations were rejected by Mr. Justice Linden in his report," Harris said.
However, George's brother Sam said it was time for Harris to apologize for the past 12 years, which he called extremely painful for his family.

Peter Edwards Robyn Doolittle Staff Reporters FOREST, Ont.-The shooting death of Dudley George was not an "isolated incident," but an example of how things could go horribly wrong if Ontario doesn't improve its relationship with First Nations people, a provincial inquiry has found. Justice Sidney Linden yesterday issued his massive report on one of the most controversial incidents in Ontario history - the occupation of Ipperwash Provincial Park by First Nations people on Sept. 4, 1995, and the killing of George by Ontario Provincial Police officer Ken Deane two days later. "Ipperwash revealed a deep schism in Canada's relationship with aboriginal people and was symbolic of a sad history of government policies that harmed their long-term interests," Linden said after releasing his four-volume, 1,500-page report. Linden pointed to the ongoing occupation of a housing development at Caledonia as an example of tensions involving native land claims. "The aboriginal occupation at Caledonia proves that Ipperwash was not an isolated event," Linden said. Six Nations people began protests in Caledonia over land claims in February 2006, and the issue remains unresolved. "Ipperwash is important because public officials and institutions need to be held accountable for their actions," Linden said. "Unfortunately, the issues that were at the heart of the Ipperwash occupation remain to this day. This inexcusable delay and long neglect, by successive federal governments (to deal with native land claims), are at the heart of the Ipperwash story," Linden said. Premier Dalton McGuinty quickly apologized on behalf of the provincial government. But he said he will take some time to assess Linden's recommendations, which include an independent agency to deal with land claims and a new ministry for aboriginal people. Federal Indian Affairs Minister Jim Prentice did not issue an apology, but said the government would move quickly to give land that used to be occupied by a military base in Ipperwash Provincial Park back to the Kettle and Stony Point people. The government took it in 1942 and the occupation of the park began in September 1995 to highlight the demand for the return of the base. "In my view, the most urgent priority is for the federal government to return the former army camp to the Kettle and Stony Point First Nation immediately with an apology and appropriate compensation," Linden said. His comments were delivered before about 200 people at the hockey arena in this tiny community near Ipperwash Provincial Park. Linden accused former premier Mike Harris of misleading the Legislature by repeatedly denying that he told a high-level meeting of police and government officials, "I want the f---ing Indians out of the park," hours before the massive police operation which ended in George's death. Linden said that "after carefully assessing the evidence," it was his view Harris made the statement. However, Linden concluded that Harris did not interfere or give inappropriate directions to the police during the operation. Linden suggested the government's "imperative for speed" in removing the protesters from the park led to poor decisions by both the politicians and the OPP. He said while the OPP had a "go-slow" approach, it was overruled by Harris's desire for a quick end to the occupation. "The provincial government's imperative for a speedy conclusion to the occupation was difficult to justify by events on the ground. ... There was no proven substantial risk to public safety that would justify this urgency."
In a statement, Harris expressed satisfaction that he was not accused by Linden of directing police during the late-night operation.
"I am pleased that 12 years' worth of false and politically motivated accusations were rejected by Mr. Justice Linden in his report," Harris said.
However, George's brother Sam said it was time for Harris to apologize for the past 12 years, which he called extremely painful for his family.

It's true - Consumer Reports Mag. did a study - coffee taste testers pick McDonalds Premium coffee over Starbucks.
Adding milk and sugar makes many coffees taste better - that otherwise wouldn't taste that great - taste testers test on black coffee - no sugar, no milk.
Cooks Magazine (American Test Kitchen PBS TV) says the best way to get the best taste:
1) is use a coffee burr mill.
2) grind up a bunch of coffee beans (that you like).
3) put ground coffee in a Glad brand feezer bag (the other brands suck and don't stop freezer odours going through plastic and seal into coffee.
4) take out coffee from freezer take out amount needed and return Glad bag to freezer immediately.
5) let grinds warm up before use or use a coffee maker that delays the flow of water for 30 sec or so before it goes into the pot.
Cooks Mag says that the longer the milled coffee sits in the freezer the better it tastes. The longer the coffee sits in the freezer - the less bitter the coffee becomes.

GreenPeace folks need to do more homework before taking on Jobs. Or maybe all GreenPeacenicks use Apple computers and don't want to guilt themselves. What am I talking about?
50% of Apple computers in use right now, CANNOT be effectively upgraded. All iMacs, eMacs as well as Apple laptops CPU's (and Graphic cards too?) cannot be upgraded. Not only can they NOT be upgraded; the used Apple computer dollar value is so low - that they don't get recycled by second hand users so..... end up in landfills.
At the same time, Apple's own software upgrades (paid for upgrades) will NOT run on existing Apple computers - forcing users to chuck there hardware. For example, GarageBand won't even install on an iMac DV SE!

Since Apple keeps jumping up and down about it's designer's ability (to make things look cute?) - why don't they get their designers to design SNAP TOGETHER COMPONENTS. Right now you can buy an Asus laptop "shell"; and then install the various components you want use. And when you want to upgrade - just snap in the new components. Simple eh!

When it comes time for a consumer to buy anything in the world of computer hardware and/or software; getting accurate/valid information is next to impossible. PAYOLA, PAY FOR SAY, and FRAMING are all rampant in all media - no matter what the subject.
One can likely count on one hand, the number of reliable sources when it comes to hardware/software reviews or comparative studies. One example, one valid source, is the Consumer Reports, the non- profit magazine - which has 6,000,000 paid subscribers.

The Mayor Of London UK decided to bring some DEMOCRACY to the hard surfaced public open space (roads, sidewalks, squares, promenades, esplanades and so on) to London and hired the Dane, Jan Gehl the world's foremost researcher and designer of public open space. Gehl has been hired to transform all of the downtown of London UK from a car oriented place to a pedestrian oriented space - just like Copenhagen that Gehl transformed over a 40 year period. Unfortuntely there is not one landscape architect, urban planner, architect, road engineer who has the skills sets needed to research and design effective hard surfaced public open space in Canada or the USA (or the UK, or..or..or...). It's obvious that the RICH POLYARCHY desperately have been making sure that their puppets block or eliminate the devlopment and implementation of public open space in each and every city. It was fantastic to see the Anarchists take back the streets in Seattle and other cities in the USA.
If the study is valid/scientific - any other research group can replicate the study to verify the results. You know - the scientific method.

B - But in every major city in Canada and the USA - the RULING ELITE (The RICH POLYARCHY) for the past 60 years have eliminated PUBLIC OPEN SPACES by totally controlling all urban planning/city design. No EFFECTIVE squares, no EFFECTIVE promenades, no EFFECTIVE esplanades, and even reducing sidewalks width to near zero. It's obvious the RULING POLYARCHY are terrified of have Public Open Space where people can congregate in large numbers. The latter is called social engineering.
C - And then there's the level of air pollution that everyone is exposed to in all BIG cities.
