Depends on who gets us DVDR/W type media out of these formats. If I can get an HD-DVD drive with cheap media for my PC and Blu-Ray is encumberred by DRM HD-DVD still has a chance. But if HD-DVD tries to compete by using their own DRM scheme, it will be about as popular as Divx.
I bet someone will come along with a better general purpose media for PCs before Blu-Ray takes hold. DVD still has a lot of life left in it, it has a much larger install base, and there aren't any real benefits worth the upgrade at this point. These studios will still be required to sell DVDs if they want access to that size of market.
What's going tohappen when you can get a 10MP or 20MP digital camera for $100? What's going to happen when these high res cameras are integrated into cell phones and PDAs and walkmans and sun glasses? I think its inevitable that this digitcal tech will replace the old analog stuff, its only a matter of time.
An analog photo ages with time, a digital file hopefully does not.
What has Microsoft given us? It has given us Windows, sure, it was buggy earlier and a lot of things didn't work like they were supposed to (plug and play springs to mind) but it was a pioneering effort. No one was even close to the ease of use that Windows offered. Sure, Mac OS was a lot prettier but then it cost the moon and the stars along with both your arms and legs.
What has Microsoft given you? They didn't give you Windows. You paid for that or stole it. They didn't give you these updates that fixed security and bugs. You had to pay for those too, in the form of a new OS.
Windows 98 is not the same OS as Windows XP. And you will have to pay for Vista when its available, to get further updates, security patches, etc. XP at least offers a better update facility, but it leaves a lot to be desired for a Linux user like myself who is used to apt, yum, synaptic, and that whole GPL thing.
From where I am standing Microsoft costs about as much as Apple without the polish or *nix core technology. That's not a very good deal. But if that's what you're used to, or what you like... well, its your money. At least you'll be spending more of it than me. That makes me smile.
Good question. The speculation that God or Aliens created life on Earth is an unreasonable conclusion to draw from the evidence at this time.
I don't care what you believe, I only care what you can prove. So please, supply this theory of Intelligent Design, if you even know what a scientific theory is. HINT: Its not a guess. Or properly reclassify it as theology, not biology.
because we KNOW we arised spontaneously.
Who's we, Pocahontas? The Homo Sapiens I know evolved over many many centuries of.. you guessed it.. evolution.
Did God/Aliens also create? Homo Habilis Homo Erectus Homo Sapiens Homo Sapiens Neandertalensis Homo Sapiens Sapiens Homo Floresensis
Why so many mistakes? Cognitive dissonance getting to ya?;)
Listen, what most people are saying is ID isn't even a theory, its not in the realm of biology. Its simply religion wrapped up in scientific sounding rhetoric. Nothing more. It is a waste of time for real scientists and educated people.
Sure we can think about how the universe was created by some old guy with a beard saying a word, really loud and slow. But that's about a provable as the God I saw on my LSD trip last week. So please, just keep it to yourself until you do the research.. in short, stop wasting our time.
Time is a limited resource, far more valuable than your opinion.
When the tale of your life is told make sure its not about the code you cranked out but the lives and people you touched.
That's like saying "just have faith".. I'd rather work to accomplish something, even if its just for my own amusement, than waste my time with people who have no passion for creativity. I love my friends and family, but I have a limited amount of time here. If they're not interested in creativity I'm not going to try to manipulate them into being interested. I just hope they're happy, they're always welcome to join in all the fun..
Its like the difference between pre-programmed and interactive entertainment. If they would rather watch TV than play a network game with me I'll accept that and quietly escape to my virtual world. After all, theirs is pre-programmed, its static, excessively repetitive, full of dogma and religion instead of science and fact. That is their preference, but it is not mine. I'll still keep informed, grabbing a snapshot of the status quo from time to time. And I'll always love them and hope, no pray, that they're making the right choice.
Or if its a network game, can we setup a LAN party on one license?
That's why I will always prefer FOSS over anything even remotely commercial. It lets me do what I want with it. I don't mind paying for something as long as it doesn't come with unreasonable restrictions.
...only so long as they are paying me "on my own time". Else the only leverage they have is my job, which isn't too important if they treat me like a slave.
I'll go find another one or start my own. Jobs are cheap and easy.
That's it exactly. These execs seem to care more about user friendliness, pretty icons and such, than stability, security, features/functionality, and even TCO.
I agree with your statement about the ISS, but the far reaches of space hold many secrets. Its not unlikely we could find another planet with an ocean with as much life as we can find in ours. We've explored most of our planet, documented most forms of life, etc. What we've learned is amazing. But we could learn just as much from 1 other planet, and there could be tens or hundreds or thousands or millions out there, its hard to tell.
Some answers we may never get from life on this planet, but could you imagine the possibilities of finding several million new forms of life and what impact that could have on our understanding in all fields of science? Its a potential whole new perspective to how exactly life exists. We could find a planet in the premordial stages or a planet several million years older than ours. Exploring the cosmos is also like exploring the timeline, something we can't do very easily here.
I don't buy it.. but, then again, I use FOSS software all the time. So I'm confused why these big megabucks corps are confused. Didn't their exec go to highschool?
Software can be confusing and costly, if you're a moron.

Yep, and yet a default install of ANY Windows OS is still years behind almost all Linux distros in terms of functionality.
Care to explain how consistency and usability is more important than functionality? Your rant seems to suggest the color of my icons is more important than having a fully functional word processor, spreadsheet, and image/audio/video editor. I wonder how many Windows user pay more for their software. Considering my OS cost me $0.00 I have very little to complain about, really. Us Linux users get a heck of a deal.

All I've seen from the right is a bunch of hypocracy and lies.
I'd rather talk about what they don't want to hear for a while. I'd rather shove my 9" liberal cock down all your Republican Christian throats! You know you deserve it after what you put us through. Using the tragedy of 9/11 to spread your gospel is pure blasphemy and you know you're so going to hell for it. I hope you burn patrioticly, you traitors of truth and justice!
RedHat 7.2 doesn't get compromized in under 15 minutes when connected to the net. There are no known automated attack propogating through RedHat 7.2 systems. Perhaps if RedHat 7.2 had 90% of the market things might be different, but they aren't. Windows users should have to pay a security tax.
The goal with most laws is not to stop the criminals, just to create a business out of punishing them.
So we should go so far as to put up directory listings with children's names, age, email and home addy, phone number, pictures, etc. And then make it illegal to email, call or solicit them for anything.
Then we need to build a system to monitor all these points of contact and prosecute offenders. Maybe we can have their names added to those sex offender lists, too, just for contacting a child. Then we can continue to punish them for decades and keep better track of them and stuff.
I can think of dozens more offhand. Science likes to tantalize you with incredible possibilities that float just outside your reach;)
The reason these things are outside our reach and so tantalizing is because we're not a scientific society. We're a religious society. Our religion is mostly made up of capitalism, Republican, Democrat and christian "values". What these groups value is just about anything BUT science.
So we get propoganda, dumbed down to their level, that presumes how this technology might be used to improve the average religious person's life.
Its mostly nonsense and I always feel less intelligent for reading it. Every article, every single article about technology, even those that are posted on Slashdot, are like that. They mention nanotechnology and have to explain they are talking about really small things, for example. Its just crazy.
Hasn't anyone picked up a science book in their lifetime? If they forgot EVERYTHING in it maybe they should stop smoking so much weed or for christ's sake legalize it so I can function at their pathetically uneducated level.
Any sovereign nation has to have this power. But I agree that "just compensation" is not properly defined. I would prefer something like double market value, since this action is taking away someone's liberty to pursue happiness, property, etc.
Freedom is more important than fixing the symptoms of our failed economic system. If they can't fix the real problems that cause blight, poverty, foreclosure of large business and government-run institutions, then these symptoms will only get worse. Taking away one's freedom doesn't help us in any way.
Now taking away one's freedom in the name of sovereignty, for national security or in extreme and similar situations, does make sense. Though that should happen much less often.
What our Supreme Court did is decide that a small town can take your home from you if they fear economic collapse after GM or Boeing or a military base shuts down. There's no certainty that by taking your home they will improve the economy. Its a gamble and you lose by default, if they take your stuff.
Probably better to live elsewhere anyway. This country sucks. It can't even understand what the real problem is and much prefers to patch the symptoms instead of doing a proper analysis and unbiased evaluation of how these problems occur.
Yeah? Well, you're stupid.
You paid for HPUX server here in 2005? WTF!?! Psycho.

It must start somewhere, hence the big-bang....
Why does it have to start somewhere? What happened before the big bang? What if time is a concept limited only to our universe?
Ever heard of M-Theory? Its far more interesting than ID.
No.
