MUST I YELL OUT LOUD HOW INSANE ALL THESE MURDERERS ARE? WILL THAT HELP MAKE IT BETTER? MAYBE TAKE AWAY SOME OF THE SADNESS OR CHANGE THE FACTS THAT MILLIONS WERE KILLED BY COUNTLESS COWARDS AND MURDERERS WHO BOMB AND POISON AND KILL INNOCENT PEOPLE CARELESSLY?
We are no better than they.. and no amount of noise will change reality. We must move on and learn from our past and stop supporting people who show signs and have trends that seem erily similar to these murderers. To label a group of people, to stereotype, takes you one step closer to becoming them. That's all the do. They call these victims "terrorists" or "jews" and kill them for being different.
Without the internet, without the freedom of speech, I believe Bush would have taken us to the edge of being the next Japan or Germany. And you want me to feel sympathy for the victims? What about us good people who have these attrocities committed in our names? Do you feel any sympathy for what they have to go through? The dead don't have to live with the terrible reality of knowing how evil humanity really is. They, at least, get some peace from our sickness.
I am a GNU zealot, so my motives are to make a product and keep it free.
The average business person's motives are to make as much money as quickly as possible and retire or do it all over again. So they couldn't care less what happens to their widgets as long as they get theirs. They seem to be more than happy to do business with Microsoft.
Capitalism is a religion for some people and ethics isn't part of their doctrine.
But what excuse do we give people for accepting capitalism as the best economic model? Greed as a motive. So what's the point? We've already sold our souls, why to complain about the heat now..
Let's say those desktop cost $1000 each. That's $200,000 worth of hardware. $15,000 comes out to 7.5% MS tax.
Now let's say those desktop cost $300 each. That's $60,000 worth of hardware. That same $15,000 now comes out to 25% MS tax.
In any case I would sure love to have $15,000 in cash sitting around to replace faulty hardware or pay for extra bandwidth, etc.
The point is you do have a choice. Its up to you. If you want to spend your money instead of save it, go right ahead. Your competitors will be laughing all the way to the bank.
Why does a High School need your social security number?
Why expect any sort of "security" with a number that all employers, renters, lenders, etc. have stored in their databases. The risk of this number being stolen increases with time.
The only problem I see here is that they hacked their school computers to get it. But if they had obtained them through social engineering by posing as a door to door sales person with a simple order form that includes SSNs, etc. I wouldn't have a problem with it.
Its hard to do much without giving up your SSN these days. Just try to get around without it.
I would replacing the SSN system with something like a public key encryption system, possibly with different keys for each transaction. If its so important why not treat it that way? Or do we just like blaming our kids for our own stupidity?
Any other action just allows others to tar us all with the same brush.
Then they're stereotyping. But you're writing as if you're one of them. Why stereotype people? One kid does a DoS attack and you call the whole free software community terrorists? Do you have any idea who you are talking about?
You say its the cyber equivelent of terrorists, burning down newspapers, and declaring war. First off cyber refers to cybernetics, not the internet. Second, terrorism, wars and arsen kill, injure and put people in real physical danger. Hacking and DoS attacks do not. And hacking is very different than DoS. Hacking involves breaking into computers. DoS simply refuses those computers network bandwidth.
I may not agree with the children who throw tantrums and DoS businesses they don't like, but I certainly wouldn't feel any sympathy for LinuxWorld after reading their unethical propaganda.
But even though teachers may teach, I found they hate to be taught.
Too bad they have little to offer in the area of teaching computers. Maybe if they had the balls to use Linux they could learn how to teach computers more effectively instead of kicking students out of their library because they know too much about their networks and systems and can't be trusted.
I think teachers, like most people, are simple ignorant. And who's fault is that? The students? They're the ones losing out on a decent education.
I learned more about computers by reading books and browsing the 'net than I ever did from a "teacher". I expect more from our educators. If they're unwilling to learn what makes them think they are authoritative for any topic? Science isn't static, y'know.
Since its optical why not cram 100GB on a 5.25" disc? Or 200GB or 400...
It doesn't seem very difficult for them to put 50GB on these things now. By 2007 another company was saying they could get 100GB or more. But why wait, set the standard to scale beyond 200+GB per disc and let the market work out the details. Competition is good, right?
There's no problem. The whiners just need to fork OpenOffice if they think its worth it. OOo is a stupid name. And a fork can be nicely integrated with KDE, GNOME and OSX/Cocoa.
Anyway, I'm going to use Gnumeric, Abiword and Koffice in my distro until something better comes along.
That's open source code, available to everyone to test, hack, QA, document, etc.
Very different than OpenSolaris, which as of now is still not open. Its like RedHat saying "We'll give you OpenRHEL in a few months.", and trying to convince me that they are an open source company because they are planning on releasing source code some time. Except RedHat already has released almost all the source code to RHEL because most of its components are GPL, like the kernel and core libraries.
Sun, on the other hand, doesn't have an open source linux distribution. But they're trying to convince me that they are an open source friendly company. If they kept their mouth shut about OpenSolaris instead of using it like an advertisement, or just simply announced it under the radar, then we'd already think they were a good OSS company because of OOo. But their execs have tarnished their image in the eyes of many FOSS advocates, like me, because they can't stand the GPL.
Its not my fault they can't deal with the level playing field the GPL enforces on all Linux companies. Guess they'll have to try harder to get a piece of this pie. Personally, I'd rather they go without.
Sure, they should get the benefit of the doubt, but the more they push the OpenSolaris RealSoonNow(TM) advertisements we'll push back with *cough*vaporware*cough*.
Don't let it hurt your feelings, just focus on getting the code out and the rumors will go away.
Right now OpenSolaris is almost as stable and secure and revolutionary as Longhorn.
You don't hear us touting the awesome new features that will be available in Linux 3.0 kernel or KDE 5.0 or X.org 6.9, do you? They will be out in a year or two. But the community doesn't leverage that vaporware for political gain. That's the reason you're taking heat.
look no further than excrypted communication via proxy, Freenet, etc.
Even ssh can be used to create an encrypted tunnel. All anyone needs to get access to this censored info is ssh access to one system outside their firewall or censorship software, like, say, any system in the US or EU.
Is it illegal to purchase a shell account on a foreign system?
We're trying to force everyone to be Righteous Christian Capitalists.. spreading democracy and freedom around the world in name only.
silient?

Depends on your motives.

I always feel sympathetic when innocent people are killed.
You can't blame all of Japan or Germany or the US for the actions of a few lunatics.
Is this Microsoft's fault?
Is this Apple's fault?
Yes.
If you give someone who doesn't know how to drive the keys to your car and they run over the neighbor its your fault.
End users should have to pass a competency test before being allowed to purchase a system, or at the very least hook it up to the 'net.
Does innovation honestly need much encouragement these days? Maybe we're too busy competing with eachother over patents to notice..
respect for and obedience to authority..
Like the war in Iraq. Still today there are smart people defending that very bad idea.

This is nothing more than the industry's largest monopolies attempting to keep control.
Go ahead, support your favorite monopoly. Trust them. They always do what's best for the people. Because they love you.
Any other action just allows others to tar us all with the same brush.

Even getting non-DRM open formats is a pain on Windows and OSX. These should be included in the default install, no?
That doesn't cost anything. What are you talking about? People are cheap!

I don't know about you, but I'm going to wait for the 23" or 30" model. 19" is just too small, for a laptop.
There's no problem. The whiners just need to fork OpenOffice if they think its worth it. OOo is a stupid name. And a fork can be nicely integrated with KDE, GNOME and OSX/Cocoa.

Did you hear about Firefly? Did you know when and on what channel it was playing and chose not to watch it?
I didn't.

All closed promoters please note the problems you get into using non-Free code in your programs. You can't do what you want with your own software.
That's an excellent point. I wonder who was saying this exact same thing about the GPL a few months back...
Sure, they should get the benefit of the doubt, but the more they push the OpenSolaris RealSoonNow(TM) advertisements we'll push back with *cough*vaporware*cough*.

"Vaporware" refers to software which the publisher never intended to release
Yeah?
Wikipedia says it refers to software which was announced early by a developer well in advance of release, but which then fails to emerge.
I think they'd have more success with physicists.
If they're that concerned about piracy wouldn't it be easier to not release the content in the first place?
