Thanks to Linux one day this may be a thing of the past. Both xine and mplayer use codecs stored in/usr/lib/win32.
This means you can go here and get the latest codec packs. Untar them in your home directory. Then as root make sure the/usr/lib/win32 directory exists and copy the codec files into that directory. Its really that simple.
Then whenever you need to move these around a network with ssh..
nevertheless I still enjoy being reminded that On2 brought us VP3. I will keep an eye on that company and its products in the future and if I happen to need a commercial solution at some time they will be at the top of my list.:)
/sbin sometimes has static binaries/usr/sbin or/usr/local/sbin are usually for system binaries like smbd, httpd, sshd, telnetd, etc. And I've always thought of/opt as optional, like its okay to delete anything in there if you're running low on disk space.;)
They might be able to measure how bad poverty or other factors affect education in certain areas. Which then should lead to additional funding, but I don't believe that is the case.
But somebody has to get the movie rights and penny royalties.

I'd like to see a comparison between Windows and Linux for video encoding. Recently I've been getting over 30 fps encoding MPEG4 with transcode on Linux. I was getting just over 20 fps on Windows. But that wasn't anything close to a comparison, just an observation.
I'd like to see how these performance features they've added to Win2k3 makes it faster than Linux at performing disk I/O with a loaded CPU or two.
One test I performed last night was kinda cool. Linux can stream 4 720x480 MPEG4/ogg ogm videos over a 100mbps net at the same time with xine. Watching 4 episodes of Star Trek The Next Generation at the same time can be a most humorous experience.
Self-healing systems? Is that like apt-get / rpm / synaptic on RedHat 9?
I recently upgraded my kernel through synaptic. I wonder if this will fix those audio drivers on my laptop. I also added a bunch of software, like movie players and codecs for almost all popular formats. At any rate its working better than it was last year.
But if Mosfet's "professional" thumbnail spec just happens to be more efficient, faster or better in some way than the "standard" I think it should be adopted. That is the nature of open source software. People don't have to listen to an "authority" because nobody is really the authority. We're all working together cooperatively, but it is a give and take kind of relationship. We don't always have to get along, do we?
I can also configured a serial console in grub so I can completely admin a multi-boot system remotely. And on the system's console I can perform system backups over the net from single user mode or booted off almost any install CD. No GUI, no 3rd party software required. All of this software costs $0.00 and there are at least 3 ways to perform any task in case one of them doesn't work for whatever reason.
I like features, but in Linux we just call it choice. There's no need to inform our marketting department about rsync, scp, ssh, tar pipes, etc. Its all included in the documentation.
I'm still waiting for Halo to come out for the PC and ANY MS game to come out for an alternative OS. But I'm sure Microsoft will release those any day now because they certainly have no interest in maintaining a monopoly.
That was a very nice arguement in support of a monopoly. Unfortunately I think the rest of us know why monopolies are bad. And it had to do with that tag line you were so fond of:
locking Linux out of the desktop market
The hardware our software runs on makes no difference, but let's not confuse anti-competitive behavior with progress.
I think the EU should shoot itself in the foot and pass all the DRM/software patent laws they want. In fact they have my vote.
The faster you screw over your population by passing laws the quicker we can get his all over with. We know that DRM and software patents and legislation to allow monitoring or deny spam and other forms of internet traffic are detrimental to this global network that our economies rely upon. And I think it would be a good thing to put up firewalls on the boarders and block the free flow of information to increase profits. Because money is what we live for, it is the true meaning of life.
There I found the answer you have all been looking for.
No shit. Most people use xvid or divx with AVI instead of the standard file format (ogm) and mp3 instead of the standard audio codec (ogg).
