  4. Re:A simple analogy... on Singles, Not Albums, Define Music Industry Success · · Score: 1

I'm not claiming that people should only listen to singles. You listen to a single, you enjoy it, you maybe look up the rest of the artist's work. But sometimes, I just want to listen to a single that I particularly enjoy. I don't want to have to buy the entire album. I find this especially true for myself for genres I'm not insane about. I like rap, but I don't listen to it very rigorously. I collect scattered songs (read: singles) that I enjoy, and leave the rest of the albums for the die-hard fans. When it comes to genres I really enjoy like rock, I tend to buy the whole album much more often.

I've done this before, except I only washed the keys. It took a minute or so to pop all the keys off, then I just stuck those in the dishwasher and did the rest of the board by hand. Sure, it's a pain in the ass, but there's no real worries, because the keys obviously are easier to dry.

    Not really the same analogy.

A lot of study on viruses is done using bacteria. Phages like T4 that affect bacteria are some of the best things for people to look at to learn generalities about viruses. Just because a gene is in our genotype does NOT mean the particular phenotype is expressed. If that were the case, there would be quite a few less heritable diseases, because carriers would die. Viruses can lie dormant in the genome of its host for several cell cycles, letting the cell do the work of reproducing its genome, then, when stimulated, become active and lyse the cell.

    Also, from the article:
Indeed, the human genome is littered with the remnants of such human endogenous retroviruses (HERVs) (ScienceNOW, 29 September 2004). So far, researchers had been unable to recover a complete, functional HERV from a human genome however; part of the reason, they assumed, was that mutations accumulated over the millennia had rendered such viruses dysfunctional.

I think this is more targeted to people who create their own bands as personal audio collections, then just upload songs for their own personal use (usually illicit songs, that is).

On a side note, embed will almost certainly stick around, and I can't see any way to "fingerprint" anything embedded, because youtube/google/etc. videos use it. So this is really just a defensive move, if you will.

I'm definitely not a scientist either, but let me help you logically think this through.

You ask how the 3d view of the sun could be used in further research, implicitly in the pursuit of space colonization. Well, seeing as the sun is a pretty big deal in our solar system (I mean, it's the solar system), I think all of humanity would really benefit from understanding how and why it does the things it does.

In relation to space colonization, the radiation given off by the sun (and other celestial bodies) is only one of a ridiculous multitude of environmental factors to deal with (nevermind the logistics) in any spaceflight, manned or unmanned.

Besides, it's just frickin' cool to get a better look at the sun.

I'm not a WoW player, but I did play a character up to level ~11 or so, and I was BORED out of my skull. I would do a quest, and while the description might have been thorough, I wouldn't call it fun or ideal. "In order to become a master ranger, go kill 10 beetles"

That doesn't do it for me. Maybe the high-level quests are fun, but then, that's not a good system, grinding up a ladded of xp and gear, the latter being hoarded by higher levels and sold at extortionary prices just to get to the fun.

I constantly compare other MMO-style games to Guild Wars, because ANet did a great job. When you start off, you're "recruited" by Sir Tydus, and told to go train to help the Ascalon Guard repel Charr invaders.

Compare that to killing beetles. I liked WoW, although it wasn't quite my style, but there are some things that just click or don't click with players. If you like it, you like it a LOT. If not, you play something else.

Despite my opinions on WoW, I think TFA points out the good foundations for a great game.

Read The Hot Zone and you'll never make such a drastically wrong statement about Ebola ever again. It's some seriously nasty shit. In fact, if you just read the excerpt about Charles Monet's infection and eventual death, it will probably set you straight.

Ebola makes liquid smoothies out of people, and the scare in Reston in 1989 shows how drastic an epidemic could be. If a strain of Ebola resembling Zaire in lethality towards humans and the airborne characteristics of Reston were to evolve, it would be a bad day for a lot of people.

  24. Just plain silly. on Off With Their HUDS! · · Score: 1

How about minimalist HUDs or customizable (as mentioned above a few times) HUDs rather than getting rid of them? Look at the HUD for Prey. It doesn't take up the whole screen, but it gives all the information the player needs in a (semi)creative format. How about Jet Force Gemini (N64)? The weapons indicator is always present, showing your current weapon/ammo, and expands to show more weapons when you change weapons. The health is only present when your health increases or decreases, and fades away after that.

Wake me when the REAL innovators return to development.

Shardless worlds and connected worlds are not the same thing. The point is that Guild Wars doesn't force you to take it in the behind to get to play with your friends. Once again, yes it is instanced, but that's not the point of my comment.
