The internet connection is pretty good and the television do have a lot more channels than the standard french broadcast.

    - teenage craze. Show the world how cool you are and how many friends you have.

But all in all, it's pretty much what the web was already all about for lots of people. Blogs just made it more evident.

And I, myself, admit to posting with ego. Mod me up !

Maybe we're just getting old. I was 15 when I started playing to FPS games. Gee, it's ten years away now. Games have grown into an industry, and we've eventually grown into adults.

Not that I don't like playing, but if FPS games were just to happen, I doubt I would get as much hooked as I was back then.

Besides there were a great potential for innovation at the time. Nowadays with the current technology, I feel like there are only rooms for improvement left.

Yesterday I got called by a friend of mine (usual) who kept scratching her head on a malware problem. I took control of the machine through the XP Remote Assistance, and wow, I was just amazed. Pieces of malware by dozens, hundreds of infected files in any antivirus / antispyware. And those were unable to clean the machine - this seems more and more usual.

As a result, I got into hours of tracking, cleaning, rebooting, etc. So yeah, I can't make users who don't really care turn into wanabee sysadmins, but I can at least make them take preventive measures. IE & relatives still are the vector for most malware. So yeah, the security argument of Firefox matters to me, *A WHOLE LOT*.

  15. Re:Heh. Riiight. Now get off the high horse. on People are More Accepting of Spam · · Score: 2, Insightful

I think spam isn't the sole reason to be blamed, actually. A few years ago, the net had a huge appeal and was still quite a quiet place to be in.

The very first time I got myself into an online Diablo game, I almost went to the moon when I saw there were _strangers_ from some foreign countries _playing along_ with me. It was also exciting to get involved in some emerging communities, use ICQ and talk with complete strangers that live on the opposite side of Earth, and so on.

I think all this changed for two reasons :
    - we got used to it, no more magic involved. The net has become a daily life tool.
    - it opened itself to the mainstream. No more a quiet place there, nor people who behave themselves, but a sample of your everyday life humans, including all the annoying bunches.

  16. Re:erm how useful.. on Learning a Language in the Digital Age · · Score: 0

Yep, I'm into learning Japanese, and I came here because anime made me used to this language. I got to love how japanese sounds, and was kind of mindlessly happy each time I could get the meaning of some very, very basic words. So, I naturally came to have a growing interest into Japan, and started to learn the language by myself.

Very same goes for the _halfwitted anime nerd who's "learning japanese"_, that's true: I can barely manage basic japanese. It's a long, long process that learning this language. It's entirely different from what you've seen. I'd be far better off today if I had spent that time and efforts into learning some western language, let's say German. But, well, I wouldn't have any basis in that exciting, interestingly different, and difficult language. Nor would I know a few hundreds of those pretty kanjis, as "halfwitted" as I might be.

    Your devoted anime fanboy.
