I'm no fanboi; before the DS, the previous handheld I owned was the Atari Lynx, my previous console was the Sega Mega Drive (both given to me by my parents; though my brother has owned both the Play Station and PS2, I've enjoyed both, again he got them from my parents). Infact I've never owned a Nintendo product before, not even a Game boy. I was just commenting on the price differential; though now I'm out of Uni and have my own disposabe income, I think I'll probably buy a Wii and an maybe XBox 360 aswell. With the upcoming price drop, it'll still be cheaper than the PS3
Depending on time, where you want to sit, what cinema, and your age, movie tickets range from ~£3.50 to ~£8.00 where I live. Some cinemas in London have tickets priced ~£10 to ~£15; this isn't replicated antwhere else in the UK as far as I know (people in London get even more ripped off than the rest of us).
Execpt sitting right next to it will be Nintendo's offering at around £200 (probably nearer £150 or £175). I know which one I'm gonna buy, I had the same choice when I went into the shop and saw the PSP bundle at £270 and the DS bundle at £120. I chose the DS, people will buy the Nintendo, especially as it's going to come out at more than 1\2 the price in the UK, and about 1\3 the price in the US
If that's true, it's Awsome. $200 is just over £100. I paid £120 for my DS and 3 games. It sounds as if I'll be able to get a Wii and 3 games bundle for around £150-£170. I just hope I don't have to import it just to keep to that price. Please Nintendo, don't do a Sony and make $499 = £499.
These guys break US law all the time, but there's nothing the US government can or should do about it, espicially because as far as their own government is concerned, they are acting entirely within the law. A fact which is lost on may companies judging by all the legal threats against them. None of which have come to anything.
Spot on, I havn't owned a console since my Sega Mega Drive, (Though I recently bought a DS), I'm a frequent PC gamer, and this is the first console I've seriously thought about buying; if Nintendo carry on impressing like this, I might even get one on (the UK) release date.
eh? "seeing is believing" comes from the bible? Well, even if it does, it's a phrase that has long lost it's religious connatations, it's now just a generic marketing phrase, Nintendo have just adapted it for the Wii.
I think he means they are going to release yet another flavour of Vista "MS Windows Vista - gamers", alongside the other 7 flavours of Vista that are planned.
Exactly, you've hit the nail on the head. does th GP really think he could have come up with a name that would have got 4 slashdot front pages in 4 days (remember, these arn't dupes, they've all been follow ups)? Nintendo's marketing dept. has pulled a stroke of genius, they've got all the "hard core" gamers talking about Wii, they've persuaded people like me, and you(geeks who are casual gamers). They've got thousands of people talking about one, yes 1 press release. I think that somone, somwhere is going to get a pay rise.
I actually don't mind the name anymore, my initial reaction was "that's a stupid name"; but after a couple of hours, I was thinking "it's just a name". So hoax or no hoax, I don't mind, execpt I think it'd be funnier if it was a hoax, because all the people slamming Nintendo's marketing dept. will suddenly look stupid. As I said the best time to reveal it as a hoax, won't be at E3, but a couple of weeks, maybe a month before it goes on sale. Think of all the launch hype that would create.
'm just saying I'll never look at Cardcaptor Sakura quite the same way ever again.
Arrrrgggggggggggggg!!!!!!! My inner eye!!! You, sir have just burned a hole in my brain, I can't get various, er.. strange mental images out of my head. Honestly, that's just wrong, on so many levels.
"Hardcore" gamers and geeks aren't their primary market anymore, the're going for the casual gamer market in a big way, gamers are now a secondary market. People like me, who just like to play Tetris DS, or Mario Cart for an our or so, will be their main focus. seeing how Nintendogs and Animal Crossing etc. did, it seems that the're hitting that market almost perfectly.
If it wasn't a joke, Nintento's marketing must be thinking about turning it into one after seeing how much coverage one press release has given them; coverage for a couple of weeks before E3 bought by one press release, another couple of weeks of coverage after, with another. though a funnier time to do it would be about just before it's released, garunteeing huge amounts of launch coverage.
If this is all part of some PR gimmick, then Nintendo has taken a huge gamble for nothing.
I wouldn't say for nothing, this is the 3rd article in three days here at slashdot, millions of people all over the web are talking about Nintendo just a couple of weeks before E3, how many people were talikng about Nintendo last week? Secondly, if, as some here have suggested, that the name is a hoax, people will be talking about it for weeks after E3. If it's not a hoax, we'll all have forgotten about the fuss by July. All in all it's been a good move by Nintendo: acres of coverage by releasing a single press release.
If it wasn't a big joke\hoax, they should turn it into one; afterseeing the hype they generated with one press release, just think of how much more they'll get if they do claim it was a hoax at E3 as you suggest.
nobody prior to the announcement had registered any tradmarks or websites with the Wii name.
If this was true, it'd deserve an article all of it's own, but look at the update at the bottom of that site:
Update: This just in from Nintendo on the subject of the missing Wii trademark: "Nintendo has filed many trademark applications for Wii. Trademark Web sites often take time to update, and you can expect the Wii trademarks to appear shortly."
I want to enter this comp, but without being able to see the tags (I still can't), I don't know how they would effect my design choices, just let all logged in users see them; if you can, otherwise I'll just have to guess what I'd do with them.
Maybe, but zengarden is good for inspiration; and to do this well (i.e. to win), within those terms of reference, I need inspiration, more than the quick fix that oswd gives.

I can see the Daily Mail headlines already :p

More like thepiratebay.org has never embarresed the US military.

I perfer Eurogamer which had the same thing here. It also has MS conference live here (going on as we speak.)

It's addictive in the same way that the original tetris was addictive, touch mode is addictive aswell; and the puzzle modes are just great fun.

their primary market won't want to own one

Most of that 90% will continue to type "google.com" into their address bar, and carry on using google anyway.
Surley you mean "Wiiiiiiiiiiiiiii!"
