Google is not complying with AFP, they are punishing them.
I don't understand how this case was even brought through the courts far enough for us to hear about it. Were these news stories password protected? Did Google crack a membership and STEAL them? I hardly think so..
Google never claimed to be the owner or creator of the content collected from AFP, they showed a blip of it and linked to the original story. I don't see any infringement there. Otherwise aren't news sites that quote other news sites with credit infringing as well?
Anyway, if they wanted Google to stop they should have changed their robots.txt (le_robeautes.txt)
the point isn't that free speech is being taken away. it's that companies are going to have to start changing the way their business works when it shouldn't be their job to. anyone with children or parents (that's right, that means everyone) knows that it is a parents duty to keep an eye on their kids, including their internet life.
that's like requiring rockstar games to have a child lock that parents have the option to enable. something like this would be useless, because a parent concerned with the game and its effects on young children would already not let their child obtain the game.
isp's shouldn't even fight it, it's a state full of mormons. if they have all decided to follow this rediculous cult blindly there is no point using logic and the constitution to pursue justice.
if i were an isp that serviced utah:
i would freeze all instate operations
broadband access would be indefinitely disconnected
users would be given dial up numbers to use which would be long distance, out of state numbers
the slashdot description doesn't say what the article does.
it is more of a sales tax extended to the internet than anything else. it would mean that items that you purchase and then download (or purchase and then have shipped to you) online are taxed.
the slashdot description makes it look like taxes will be applied per byte accessed online, nice one.
with all of the talks of the industry trying to push apple into charging higher prices (whether true or not) there is no way that apple will be able to lower them.
i also don't see how 5 cents per song will ever pay for the expense of a service like that anyway (sadly).
jack thompson is a lunatic who tried to destroy the reputation of my dad, with no reason he could say
he took id software and others to court after the columbine shootings, and he lost. he's not going anywhere with these cases, because the fact of the matter is that these video game companies aren't responsible.
when i was a child and i watched a movie that scared me, my parents would comfort me. they would tell me that it wasn't real. my parents would draw the line between fantasy and reality.
not everyone's parents are the same and they don't all do their jobs as parents (some just aren't there). but that doesn't give anyone the right to just determine that someone ELSE should be responsible if the child has been deemed as not being responsible for their actions.
this isn't a murder case where the jurors / judge might not have had someone close to them murdered, this is a spam case. every one of the jurors / judge has recieved loads of spam (unless they don't have an email address).
this case should hit so close to home that there should be no debate.
if you can afford to be out of a job for a while, you made the right decision. there is nothing worse than a job that blows. so many people are defined by their occupation and you don't want to be defined by something you hate.
i hated my last job, working as a cashier. i was the only person who put any effort into what i did, and the customers noticed it.
the day i put in my two weeks a customer gave me a new job. now i work on campus and have my own office (i'm a 19 y/o college student).
kind of a stretch of an analogy, but you know, just keep looking forward and find a job you love.
i'd say it is more like dropping the speed limit to 30, putting a cop at every mile marker, and giving those driving Hummer H2's the right to run anyone else off the road.
The point is that these people *knew* that what they were doing was really stupid, but were doing it anyway because they couldn't be bothered to be secure.
those users will learn quickly though. if they already know the dangers of what they are doing, and then they are made to face the consequences of their actions, they will probably think twice about security.
the people we are talking about are the ones that don't know what 'mail server' means, the ones that don't know what the right mouse button does, and the ones that double click on text links while browsing the web.
this is a pretty big development.
it seems that his donations weren't so much a legal defense fund, but a settlement fee fund.
a million dollars is nothing to the mpaa. they were only after the logs. the million dollar amount was just to scare the poop out of guys like us who can't afford it.
with those logs, given the success of john doe trials, will land any number of downloaders in court!!1
webber sold potentially thousands of downloaders out.
gg mr. webber, ggkthxbye
it's true that there are a number of actions it seems he wouldn't be able to do, but it doesn't mean it would completely suck.
i actually bind my keys like this:
move forward: right mouse button
move backward: click mouse wheel
attack: left mouse button
reload: roll wheel down
i don't know how much button functionality the head mouse has but some sort of set up like that would be possible. just find nub servers i guess:/
i have met him before.
he also spearheaded the attacks against id software, etc when the columbine shootings happened. i don't remember if he lost the case or if it was simply thrown out by a judge.
my father is a pastor in miami, and he began attacking him as well. i don't know what he was trying to prove, he didn't seem to have a point. he never filed actual charges (for obvious reasons) but went over his head, and was shut down pretty cuick.
in any case, there is an informal restraining order against him contacting my dad, anyone at the church he preaches at, or even visiting the church.
he caused my dad a lot of stress for a while, but then my dad started ignoring him and he got bored and left. he's really a quack. not long after columbine he spoke at my school (i was in middle or high school at the time), his speech included a lot of graphic imagery, but no real content.
i think the only thing anyone remembers from the speech is when he said that the columbine attackers had video of snuff porn on their computers (he got really graphic and described women being raped with shovels, then being shot to death)
i don't know what that was meant to prove, but in my mind it proved that these kids had pretty messed up lives before doom.
"by signing yuo agree not 2 l34k teh warez und3r penalty of appel pwnage lol"
iTunes doesn't offer a subscription service : )
ok you can have a copy, but you have to do a better job of keeping it a secret than i did!

why force a company to do a parent's job?

if i were an isp that serviced utah:
the only flaws i've ever seen with css are the differences between IE and other browsers in how they render it, which is the fault of the browsers.
amazing.
french courts: the only courts more wack assed than america's!!1

i'm sure there's a jack thompson quote somewhere that would help them support their reason for doing this haha
i agree

amazing, i absolutely cannot believe this made slashdot news. of course google wants the search feature on their faq to be as effective as possible.
gg, g g.
holy crap, just think of how many CANADIAN dollars that is!!1

At netscape, we don't make a lot of the programs you use. We make a lot of the programs you use uglier.
i am completely blown away

what would be the problem with them getting together? they are probably the two most well natured companies serving the internet.
it would be like santa claus and the easter bunny getting together to make a SUPER HOLIDAY!!1

when my patent for '==' is approved, you're all screwed :)
of course they lead tv piracy, they have 5 channels.
