Well, actually, I think you CAN donate your CPU cycles to google :-) Technically it's for some kind of research at the moment, but hey, why couldn't they use that to render searches or other processor intensive stuff? You thought the 100,000 node cluster was big...

I agree. I still go to Yahoo for my mail, because they bought Rocketmail, and my account got moved over. I've still got mail from 1996 in that mailbox. I don't want to give it up, but I would definately sign up for GMail.

when I was about 3 years old, I took my matchbox cars, and mounted a magnet on the front of one. Then I took a metal beam from my erector set, taped it to the top of my car, and put one end way out in front, on which I taped another magnet, opposite poles facing each other. It took me a couple of seconds to realize why it wasn't going to work :-) It sounds pretty similer to an ion drive pushing it's own sail.

Not that I agree with microsoft, but to play the advocate, why should a software company do something directly to injur itself? If it does something for ethical reasons, that is one thing, but if you're suggesting that they directly cause harm to the company to advance what you and I (most likely non-users) want, then they would be doing a disservice to their stock holders, and would quickly be replaced.

Actually, I think the first such "breakthrough" was when they managed to stop light in a Bose-Einstein Condensate, there-by proving that it was possible, under extreme circumstances. This is a much more practical way of doing it. If they succeed, then we will move beyond the "breakthrough" into the "practice" part. It could be very good.

I believe that ideas like this, the parent, are the kind of ideas which halt progress. Their cries of "All or Nothing!" will much more frequently bring nothing than all that they ask for. This is what is known as a compromise. They knew that in an ideal world, we would like the full source code to the intel (and NVidia) drivers, however due to their corporate stance, they are unable to comply, due to their need to protect their shareholders and their IP. Instead of ignoring the userbase as 80% of the other hardware companies do, they instead make a peace offering. "We can't give you the full open source, but what we can do is let you use our device by giving you drivers written by the same organization who created the card". How many windows drivers are open source? Do you think that they have the ability to check their code? You mention that when you have to powercycle your box (every 2 weeks), it's the closed-source NVidia graphics card that causes it. That's so sad, I could cry for you. Reboot your computer every 2 weeks because you can't look at the source code of the driver for your top of the line video card. Other people tied to other operating systems should be so lucky. Stop whining, grow up, and learn how the real world works.
