    Thus, a republic can be democratic.

    A republic can also be undemocratic (Zimbabwe, Soviet Union). There are democracies that are not republics (Britain, Sweden). The two concepts are, as you point out, not mutually exclusive as GP seems to think - they're not even on the same axis. You can draw a 2 x 2 grid and find examples in each cell.

    Maybe you read it somewhere else, but the linked article in the Groaniad doesn't say. It also doesn't mention what colour he is, so we can safely conclude he isn't white.

    Even if you insert "having" before "a given career", it's ambiguous as to exactly whose career you mean. And that should be "given", not "give".

    How about cow poo? Cow poo is probably worse:

    - Low energy density.
    - Slow and mostly invariant energy release via intermediate substances.
    - Smells. Smells like poo.

    A closely related substance does have one major advantage - it's apparently available in virtually infinite quantities.

    The James Bulger case shows it needn't only be adults. However, the total number of such people probably averages out to one in a hundred million.

    On the basis of that case alone, you're out by a factor of four; it would be two in fifty million.
