What I've always wondered is if there is a genetic ADVANTAGE to having no kids. That is the oldest brother has 10 kids, the other 8 have none. (you make up the number), but they support the one brother with 10 kids, thus assuring their genes go on in his kids. this is complex, but I can't think of a reason it could happen.
Look for a recording studio that is going out of buisness and attend their auction. Sometimes you can get deals, soemtimes not. (Don't pay too much)
Most cities have some hole in the wall used recording equipment place. Find them.
Don't be afraid to go analog. Avoid making extra generation copies, and you will be fine. Those old reel-reel tapes are good, better than CDs until you get too many generations out of them. (with good tape, and otherwise good habits to keep it good) In fact my understanding is a lot of professionals have given up on digital for mixing, and they often will use analog recording. The big advantage of analog as it has been a known quality for years, you can find perfectly good equipemnt for the 1960s that will work, though modern stuff might be better quality.
Why throw them away? granted no buisness or serious gamer would buy a LCD with bad pixels, but it would seem to me there is a market for LCDs with a small number of non-intrusive bad pixels. The menu bar on the bottom of my desktop for instance doens't need all the pixes to work. And if there are one or two in the middle of a large display I can live with that.
Mind you I expect to pay a large discount for the displays with bad pixels, but I would buy a 15 inch LCD with 5 bad pixels for $49.95, and it would seem to me there is a market there. And since they would throw them away before they make money.
Of course maybe they recycle the bad LCDs, in which case they do need to make more profit over the cost to recycle a bad display. Still I would think this could be done. Anyone know the costs?
Accually, my parents were a twinkle in my grandparent's eyes. I doupt I'm the only/. reader who can say this his parents were not born when McCarthy was running amuck. (accually they were born in the last years of that mess, but I hardly think you can place blame on a 2 year old for that situation, much less their offspring that won't be born for about 20 years.
Unfortunately this doesn't hurt the people responsible, just the
people being paid very little to make the phone calls
Ahh, but it does. You see they are paying for the call, generally long distance. They are also paying a telemarketer (minimum wage), who isn't making a sale, so they have to hire more wage slaves. And because you are taking away a commision in a undetectable way, wage slaves earn less, so they demand more in the wage to make up for the commission loss.
At church they always teach us to do onto others as you would want them to do to you. I wouldn't want someone to call me on my private phone, so I don't take a job calling people on their phone. Seems the wage slaves deserve whatever they get, and they should find a more productive job. (yes they exist, and creative people can create jobs)
don't be such a cynic. Just because comptuer geeks never find it doesn't mean there isn't anything more. There are a few people in the real world who have found love, and that drives them to things that money doesn't,
Saddly, as a comptuer geek I can note the existance of this phenomenon, but cannot accually participate. I also note that most who claim to have found it realise in 10 years that they have not. Still there are exceptions.
You are born in 1998, your zip code is 82312, your gender is none of their buisness (and if they instist use a coin to decide). Nor is your race, religion, or the type of car you drive their buisness.
Reasons for the above: In the US only minors have privacy protection, so by putting down a birthdate of 1998 you are under those laws as far as they know. Your physical address is none of their buisness, unless you are buying something from them. (and so far I've never had a problem with the venders who I buy from though there are bad apples out there). Your gender, race, religion, etc is none of their buiseness, on the net nobody knows you are a dog! Refuse to answer, or anser randomly. Randomly means sometimes you give the right answer, because if you always gave the wrong answer that in itself would be a clue.
Remember invalid data that they have is less valiuable then not having data at all in many cases.
In one of my grandpa's Popular Science magazines (when they were still readable, but already going down hill - mid 60s I guess) Some engineering talking to the press "After we designed the comptuer we went right to work on a desktop model." Of course in those days comptuers were big things, 6 feet high, 4 fett wide, and 3 feet deep - about the size of a desk except for height. So the first picture is a computer like that, and the second is the same computer, but sitting on a desk (and taking up all the room so the desk is useless)
Since cost is not your primary worry, can you run a test? Get one of each, configure each with several harddrives and see what happens to each under load.
While there is a large difference between the way system behave when running 50GB over 7 harddrives and the way systems work when running with 50TB in a real raid system, anything that doesn't work with the smaller systems will fail in the large ones too.
Just in case (and for any non-math people reading this) Do not write programs to do math brefore you take a numerical mythods class, and a theory of computing class.
You need to understand the limits of numbers on computers, what the error is, and so on before you can write a program that is worth touching.
Likewise you need to understand the halting problem (though not as deep), and other problems in fundamentals. (Gurdel incompletness).
Without the proper background (which a good CS program will make avaiable for you, and probably require), you cannot do this right. Of course once you have the right background language is an implimentation detail. While ML, APL, and MatLab (and a few I missed) have a lot of things to help with math, you can use any language you want to and get the job done.
Where I work we have a deparment wide email list (engineering, covers about 100 people), that someone decided should be preminatly archived. Well it turns out that a list of this size is good for two things: I brought in birthday donuts this morning; and I'm sick today, I'm on vacation, or I'm working from home. All discussions between engineers end up in emails directed only to the engineers involved, CCed to their boss. (much to the relief of the rest of us who are paid to get work done, not sort through email)
What do you mean? I'm a useability expert, and someone just sent me something that might or might not be interesting, but I don't have a program that can read it. He is the one using unuseable programs, since my comptuer follows the standards.
If you catch ANYONE altering your resume like this sue them. Your resume is copyright you, and you have the own the legal rights to it. If anyone alters it without permission you have an easy to win law suit.
Yeah that recruiter will never work with you again, but you should have won enough money out of them that it doesn't matter. (If you need something to do, and not just a job, there are plenty of open source projects looking for help) Perhaps you can run those dishonets recruiters out of buisness, which would be nice.
The odd thing is that Hitler had both biological and chemical weapons, yet did not use them.
Not really. WWI was a chemical war. After the way the powers that be decided that chemical war was aweful, and both sides had something. So they both decided to not attack with them first lest the evil other (both sides consider the other evil) use them back.
Because it worked in WWII with chemical weapons a lot of the cold war depended on having weapons you would not use next.
I have a couple old sun-3s that I use as xterms from time to time (hosted off a faster machine with usb). Would be nice to give them sound, instead of all sounds coming through the main computers' speakers.
Then I just gotta figgure out how to connect a usb mouse to the remote x-terminal instead of the local machine. I'm sure it is possibla, but I fear i'll have to write some code to do it.
Gotta give them credit for consitenty though, they don't remove a president from office for that either. Though in my more cynical days I suspect that is because they are all doing the same, and so they can't cast stones. (beind polititions non-cynical days are very limited, and normally don't last when I'm awake.
Third: How long will it take seasoned criminals to grab said countermeasure? The ones that are computer-savvy can download and install just as well as any techie.
No, smart criminals will not remove this, they will sabatoge it. That is it will still be there, and appear to function correctly, except it will only log legal activity. (ie posts to/., irc sessions, email to mom.) The things that you don't want known won't be loged.
Yes, but impulse vs sustained output is important. 150kw isn't much, but add in the time element and it is significatn. Remember that toaster over runs for a minute at a time. 1.5kw/60 =.025 kwh. While that generater is putting out 150 kwh per hour (there is a bogus measurement) which means every hour it can power 6000 seperate toaster ovens. (okay so you toaster oven probably runs longer than that at a time, but you get the point)
If they can store the methanol, and generate double that amount durning the day (with two fuel cells) they can do even better, use the coal plants that generate a lot of power but take weeks to start up only at night, and the less efficant but quick starting (or just quick starting low powered) generators when more peak power is needed. Most generators have peak efficancy at 85-95% of peak power, so the closer you can keep them to that all day the better.
Don't forget the fuel is essiantly free. If they don't burn it they have to treat it some other way because it is polution. Turn it into energy (+h20 and CO2) and you have worked on two problems, hopefully at low cost.
I didn't mind tourist class to Dallas, after at it is a short flight. (and American gives more legroom then NorthWorst, at least on that flight), but stuck in tourist class to Europe was bad, I might upgrade out of my own pocket next time, two inches would be worth it. (and I think it is more than that)
Bruce S. (I'm not gonna try to spell is last name) of Applied Cryptology fame is where I would start. Read his books, do a formal design of the system, and then hire him/his company to aduit your design BEFORE you start coding.
Don't forget to have a range of secure systems to work with. Run the web server on openBSD, and have the dataBase on trusted solaris. And use a good database and firewall (none come to mind off hand. (Note I'm giving examples, you can mix and match to please, just so long as they have to break several systems to get the data, none of which trust the others)
Take the additude that your web server will be cracked. Do your best to detect that. your firewall should protect the database (unless it is hacked!), and the database doesn't trust the firewall. With good detection you should shut down the front line systems before the cracker gets to the back end.
Remember to have experts aduit your design. Have other experts audit your code. (the later is hard, but it helps a lot)
This is the wrong question. The right question is why computers in school.
Learning is universial, not applied. You need to learn to reading writing, and arithmatic. There is no need for comptuers in that. Sure there are some good computer programs to help there, and typing is a skill that needs to be learned, but computers are the implimentation detail, not the meat. Until you have something to do with the comptuer there is no point in having one. Young kids need to learn to write things out by hand.
Yes computers are important to the world today, but comptuers change fast. when I first started with computers wordStar was the big program in industry. In High school they braged that we were learning the latest word processor that industry is using, wordPerfect 5.1 for dos. And at the time it was the biggest, but today everyone is using Word 2000, and looking at an upgrade to that. Teach the kids to think with whatever tool is avaiable, and you will be fine, but teach them that the tool currently in vogue is the only one to use and you do them a disservice.
Yes I know industry has a lot of obsolete, but fast enough comptuers they would love to donate to any charity that will take them, but that doesn't mean you have to take them. A computer is a means to many good ends, but do not allow a computer to become the end itself.
As a full time emploiee I work my 40 hours and I'm gone. I don't have much paper work. While I can be fired fairly easially, I'm always at the bottom of the list below contractors, and they normally pick and choose from full time employees to transfer first.
Full time is best for someone with a family. The benifits are better and cheaper. Also I'm only required to work 40 hours, and I get paid when I'm sick (I have sick leave, and then disability for long term sickness should I need it). A contractor needs to save money.
I have a friend who did independant contracting as a carpenter. He made as much in 6 months as he did previously in a full year, and he spent most of his days watching the outdoor channel on satalite. However he went back to a full time job. Going two months without a paycheck is really hard. (Carpenters get paid when the job is done and the loan closes, which means for a large project no money comeing in for two months while you still have the normal bills. A large part of going back was benifits. His job provides him with a nice truck, and the one he was driving wasn't holding up. A new one is expensive (and he needs a 3/4 ton truck for his tools). There are many other benifits, but the big on his you can budget how to spend a paycheck that never changes in your head. When your paycheck changes from job to job and doesn't come in for months at a time it is hard to budget even if you make more money.
YMMV, but don't fall for the trap that full time labor is 62% of the wages vs a contractor. There are more benifits, you are less easially fired (and if laid off you get better severance), you are done at the end of the day. If you have a family this is extreemly important. If you are alone and young you can take a chance by not having benifits, but I wouldn't recomend it. (I personally have not seen a doctor this year, and only did once in the last 4, but I have it anyway).
What I like is when the day is done I'm done. I don't have to do paper work at home. I do my hobbies at home, the contractors I know work more hours than me for their pay. Sure they earn it, but per hour I don't think they make more. When the company hires a contractor to help, they may have more expirence then me, but i'm still in charge of the code. I need to understand it. I need to approve the design, after all they trust me to maintain it after your contract is up. that means I have more power.
YMMV is always important. What you want is up to you. Don't be afraid to go back and forth. i've worked with several people who started as a contractor, moved to full time, and then when the project was cancled moved back to contracting.
That is not the primary purpose of guns. The large majority of guns are never used to kill other humans. Most are used for target shooting and hunting. I don't know anyone who has used a gun to kill people, either accidently or intentionally. I know many people with guns, most of whom have put food on their table with it.
To say that a gun is primarly for killing other humans is propaganda pure and simple.
Not nessicarly. There is either room for improvement (1/2 implys that if you could get rid of some tasks you would only need 2, or alternativly you have an extra administrative person should it be nessicary. Or perhaps someone who should be budgeted half to run ISS, half to do research, which is a good use for someone who has an expiriment that doesn't need full time attention. Rounding up would leave someone not busy, while rounding down (what if the true number is 2.499?) would leave you short a person, neither which is good when it is so expensive to send people up.
Plenty of people chose not to have children, or
What I've always wondered is if there is a genetic ADVANTAGE to having no kids. That is the oldest brother has 10 kids, the other 8 have none.
