    news media sucks. they worked my mom up so much that she couldn't sleep out of anxiety for the passengers. i was curious about what went wrong and amazed that they could lose it, but generally didn't give a fuck...as i think most well adapted people should feel.

    Maybe in 5 yrs hyper spectral imaging sensors will be cheap enough to be used in these cars...or perhaps inter-car communications will make up for the degraded sensing. For now, I'd think a solution for 95% of the time would work for most people.

    There are degrees of uniqueness. Try developing an algorithm that sorts data on uniqueness and you will realize this.

    from a hardware perspective, I wouldn't mind going the $250 route when upgrading my iPad. Problem is I want to stay in the ecosystem. I have all my apps and all my cloud storage and iTunes integration setup already. The $250 premium is worth it to me at the moment.

    These are the people who will buy an iPod to remain in the iOS ecosystem.

    Add in a stay at home mom and a kid and you really have to be frugal to make ends meet at $100K (which is about $60K take home after taxes/deductions/insurance/etc).

    I feel bad for the average American family who is making $55K/yr.

    Sure, agreed. But, I think the point is that 6-figures (as in $100K+/-) used to be associated with living the good life. Now it will buy you a nice modest home in a safe area with reasonably good schools while allowing you to afford health care and vacations and 401K contributions.

    Similarly, 7-figures (as in $1M+/-) used to be associated with being super rich. Now it means you're very well off and well positioned in life, but you still have to work, and you still have to budget if you expect to keep growing that money for retirement.

    my car engine has 90K miles on it and it's never had an issue. just minimal maintenance required. it's got plenty of life left. amazing that something so complex operating in a harsh environment requires virtually no maintenance to run for so long.

    I've tried over the yrs to download the latest ver of OpenOffice and to give it a try and I always end up moving back to MSFT Word within a few days/weeks.

    It's not missing features per se, it's layout/UI awkwardness and smoothness.

    BTW, consumer grade writable optical disks have a life expectancy of 10 - 100yrs depending on materials used.

    It could also be blueray disk based. Not as likely as tape based, but could be cheaper/faster at scale.

    It's tied to race. DC has a very large black population. When you have that in any city, murder rates are very high. Same for hispanics.

    I'd like to see what the murder rates are in the USA if you remove Hispanics and Blacks from stats. Pretty sad though, that it reinforces what we generally consider to be negative or unhealthy stereotypes as mostly valid and healthy.

    Of course not all coal miners will want to be coders, but why can't you teach a coal miner to code? And why do people assume that coal miners are not interested in coding. And why do people assume they don't have the intellectual ability to handle it.
