Now, how are they (U2) being hurt when my friend amasses a bootleg collection? He's already bought everything they're selling.
They could be, if the record label decides to release this material 10 yrs from now. It's quite possible that they do not want to release this material right now, because they have other U2 albums on the shelf selling quite well. To the die-hard fan, the record company is losing money by not offering that title for release right now. However, to the casual fans (who account for way more album sales than the die-hards due to sheer numbers) they probably only care to spend enough money on one U2 album today. 10 years from now, when U2 is not making any more albums (hopefully), the label can then renew interest in the band by releasing this "never before released live-footage". Just look at what they do with all of that Beatles crap.
I also have an electrical engineering degree. I will grant you that the labspace is very beneficial because it would be next to impossible for the average person to be able to afford to buy a single network analyzer to put in their garage, let alone all of the other equipment that you have access to in a college atmosphere. I still do not think that you need to have a professor around to learn the material however. It may help some to learn the material faster, but it is not required.
No one really needs college anyway. Everything that you learn in college can also be learned by simply reading a book. And if you want to argue about all of the social teachings of college, try going to a bar --no tuition required.
Before you flame this, yes, I am fully aware of the fact that no employer will hire someone to fill a technical position who does not have a college diploma. In reality though, the diploma itself does not really mean very much. Anyone who decided to read the same books, and learn the material out of curiosity rather than at a professor's orders would be just as knowledgeable in the subject matter.
You're missing the point here. The point isn't that they beat MIT (per se), it's that a group of underfunded, disadvantaged high schooler's beat the "best and brightest" students that our colleges have to offer. MIT is just a symbol of our "best and brightest". No one is implying that there aren't plenty of intelligent people that do not choose to go to MIT.
The whole Patriot act thing is kind of funny (albeit in a disturbing way) to me. In this country, you can simply use buzzwords like "Patriot", "Freedom", "Tyranny", "Terrorism (formerly "Communism") and sit back and watch all of the sheep baaa their approval. Who would ever vote against anything called the "Patriot Act"? Whatever it says, count me in! Only an un-American terrorist sympathizer would ever vote against such a grandly-titled act. Politics is probably pretty easy if you have no morals.
There are reasons why we do not have a fully free marketplace that allows monopolies (for the most part)to exist in the US. Intel can use their market dominance to force smaller companies (AMD) out of business by shaky ethical practices like that mentioned in this article. After AMD closes up shop because they can no longer compete with Intel, there is nothing to stop Intel from blatant price gouging. Why? Because there isn't any competition left. If you want a processor for your PC, you have to buy an Intel. And that is just the tip of the iceberg: After competition secedes, there are no longer any motivating factors present to keep the Intel research team at work developing faster and better processors--why spend money on research when everyone has to buy your product anyway? There's no competition, therefore there will never be a better competing product. This retards the advancement of society as a whole. This is why the gov't regulates this sort of thing.

you sure wouldn't want to stick it where the sun don't shine.

Who let the virgin post an article!?!? Somebody take away his sticky keyboard.
Well this completely changes my outlook on the IRS. Maybe I'll stop making my annual April 15th donation every year.
Well I like it. But then, I'm also fascinated by paper bags, pieces of string, and shiny things.
Damn those Japanese and their advanced tomato technology.

Oh, and there's the whole rape thing. I'm pretty sure that that's illegal.
