INAL, but from my understanding, If you repeatedly accuse someone (individual or group) of violating your rights and/or property and refuse to press legal action, that is, as far as I know, textbook libal/slander...we need to form a coalition of music fans who rip CDs to digital file formats and sue the RIAA for character assassination.
Cant wait to read the Slashdot spin when MS and Apple tag-team against the RIAA here...RIAA is accusing MS, Apple, Real, Creative, and more that I cant think of at the moment of facilitating crime on a mass scale, not exactly something that Balmer and Jobs will take without one hell of a fight...I hope
Youngsters are our most volnerable...if this thing really does hit schools, it could be really disgustingly bad: would the over-weight kid who is trying to lose weight (at the insistance of parents and doctors) be hit with candy ads? What if a kid searches out things about suicide because things arent going too well...will he see ads for guns or rope? what about the kid who is looking for porno, will he see ads for playboy (YES playboy/Maxum/Hustler DO target the under-18 crowd?...I got invites to subscribe to all of those when I started buying college books at Follets at age 17, preping for summer semester before HS graduation...
this could be a huge cluster-f**k...
I cant see this affecting schools...I just read the patent and it says that they are "giving some service or software at a reduced cost or free in exchange for mandatory ad viewing and feedback" Net zero and PeoplePC built companies that ultimately failed on similar logic. (Net Zero restructured and now sells $9.99 dial up now)
It boils down to this: no commercial product or service is free...either pay in cash or in time/privacy/inconvenience. Of cource, you do not NEED windows and MS office, Linux and Mac OS X are there too ya know!
Most ISPs can and do redirect customers to a payment page and shut off all other access when they are past due, Imagine if you will the same theory applied to this situation; a page with apps like spybot and some hand-holding...here is sample call of what would follow:
Caller: "YOU SHUT OFF MY CONNECTION! WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU FUCKERS DOING?"
Rep: "Sir, your system is compromised; you need to follow the instructions on the site that your browser is automaticly connected to at launch..."
customer "All I do is check the stocks and my kid plays (insert MMORPG-of-the-minute here)...we don't do that illegal stuff, we CANT BE infected...Norton said so!"
Lets assume for the same of making things a bit more interesting, that the caller is right, they are not infected...what else could cause this? Thats right, OPEN WI-FI!!!!
lets say that the dipshit college kid downstairs is connecting to your wifi, but you are no expert, you dont know a mac address from a zip code...and WPA...forget about it! The cable co in this case would have assumed the responsibility of ensuring a safe WI-FI setup was put in place...and I promise that the people with the skill and patience to walk someone with NO CLUE through a router config isnt going to do it on a CSR or even a L1-2 tech salary
The "cut them off" idea sounds great until you study the logistical aspects of it.
MS knows that Windows is volnerable to this crap, they even sell a suit of tools to prevent/reverse it...the Redmond gang, maybe even Bill himself should get in contact with the prosecutor and the judge...even if she gets no prison, this poor teacher is not ever going to be able to hold a good job again; convicted felons work at drive-throughs; and the top notch ones become shift lead...her life is ruined and for what? shitty MS security design and an inept IT dept.
I see several posts that say "just install linux and stick it to the man!" that is incorrect becausethe problem is forced bundling...find me a Dell or HP notebook without a MS tax: some HPs have an option of MS Dos to save money, but you still pay MS because of these bully tactics hwereby every unit sold must have a windows license!
can order empty laptops if they have site licenses for their Windows/Office products of choice...so why can Joe Consumer not get an empty laptop to install their legal copy of Windows...or dare I say L/U-NIX?
The thing premered Tuesday at 12:01 eastern on AOL music: I watched it! Al himself said that is when it would premere on Mondays Bob And Tom show: I am listening to the MP3 of the show right now...
Was the first place I heard it, in like Dec 2001, which means that it came from a RNC script, he read it, and the rest of the machene followed as always.
I really dont think that you can claim that polls differing from election results can be a total conspericy, maybe, but the problem is you do not take into account that polsters are bothersome, annoying and want to know something that I do not wish to shaare, I figure that since they are wasting my time, I will f*** up their polls, so I lie. Many other folks I know have taken the same approche for years...CNN/USA Today and Gallop do not pick the presedent.
I want to know the surfing habbits of polititions: imagine that the internet came about 50 years earlier: what would the "history" of GWB look like Vs Algore? not totaly usefull, but an interesting insight...
cleaning the history, cookies and cache on a regular basis is all that is really needed; the one problem is with the browsers, Safari has "private browse" mode for those times what you don't want anything...Firefox should have this too.
Sadly Insight Communications is too busy sucking wind to actually deliver anything like that: I have begged and demanded that, in addition to the NHL and Nascar In Car packages which they refuse to sell...in an odd situation right now but when I move to the new place, it will be Directv and Verizon DSL all the way.
Everyone already has the HD hardware via theiur cable company, the problem is the iTv software is shit: TiVo needs to lease/licence their software to cable COs for their DVRs, I owuld sooo pay an extra $4-5/Mo for TiVo software on my leased HDDVR box. $800 is way too much...
Will Myth ever support Cablecard? it is a better (imho) platform than WMCE but I and my friends still lease the catv MOTO DVRs because it is the only way to decrypt HD channels like ESPN, and watch sports subscriptions like NHL Center Ice., so untill cablecard is supported in these things, it is prettu useless for anyone without a tower and an antenna.
Give me a 24 inch display with a seperate tower at those specs and I would go for it in a minute, but an AIO at that level is sort of nuts; if your computer dies, you loose your huge canvas too, and if the display dies, you loose your HDD and data when sending it back fot a replacment.
What is so bad about the idea of a tower for ~$12oo with theose specs and the option of adding a cinema display?

Sue someone...this is what we call a tipping poing, a well over due tipping point...push that envelope just a little further and see what happens...
give a demo of riping a CD to an ipod and then ask why the fuck these cases can even make it to court!
There, that is the summation of the summery, we all know most slashdotters gave up even "reading the fantastic summery" years ago.

on 24 never has cell problems; I want that company!
was written with just such an event in mind... EFF, go to work!

Thats for the DVR, the other $100 covers the programming...
The users who posted the content without permittion infringed.

There is a reason that a "gaming channel" now shows nothing but startrek and the man show.
