From my prospective, as a college student studying I.T., the problems with linux seems to be infighting within the community and an utter rejection of anything non-oss and a reluctance to help newcomers to the linux community.
For a great example of infighting, read the latest colomn on pcmag.com by John C. Dvorak. but it doesnt dtop there, ask any linux geek what distro they like and then mention that you like a differant one, that is the quickest way to start a petty-ass flamewar
that I have ever seen.
Second: tell an OSS evangalist that you like GIMP, but preder photoshop, stand back on this one, lest rabid drool fall on your shoe as their eyes get bloodshot with anger and they shout "THE GIMP CAN DO ANYTHING PS CAN!" the same can be said for any number of titles. Untill the greater linux community stops acting like all closed source software is rooted in pure evil, this will be a barrier to entry as well.
And lastly, enough with the f***ing superiority complex towards n00bs, at one time or anotherr everyone was a "n00b". There is nothing more irretating to a newcommer to a computer platform to get the same answer to every question, "RTFM N00B" that pisses people off and could drive them back into the windows world where there is at least somewhat professional tech support.
The preceding was Just my observations, nothing more or less.
The Ads that are possibe with this would suck but why not use it as a warning system for poor nations, say a volcano is about to erupt, put a message in the sky for all to see, no matter how rual, the message would get out.
my question
I keep getting this strange error message "0-\/\/-/\/-3-|) by Cowboy Neal, He Be 1337 hax0r " is that a security threat that I should worry about?
...These numbers assume that if people didnt pirate, they would buy, while that is true for some, the vast majority would simply do without, because if they had the money to buy the software they probably would have.
/\ says it all...every/.er knows that MS coppies other elements to enhance their products, every one knows that Redmond hasnt had an original thought or idea in 20-odd years so...how exactly is this news?
The only thing that is killing TV is the "500 channels and not a damn thing to watch, hell I guess I will DL a good tv show if I cant watch it" is killing TV. Content IS and WILL ALWAYS BE king period.
...in the first place, teach them the basics of computers - A word procesor is a word processor is a word processor, a spreadsheet is a spreadsheet is a spreadsheet, seen one ya seen 'em all
Long ago, Apple had a lock on education, I never once heard a cry from the foss community in the early '90s when everyone in school was using system 7 (which might I add is FAR less stable than Win 2k/xp which is less stable today than *nix/OSX)
Teach kids COMPUTERS! show them windows, show them Mac, show them LINUX...Teach computer basics, not just one platforms way of doing things.
If you were in a place where security was ABSOUTLY KEY, you would be on the right track, but at HOME??????
I cant see a need for this level of security on a home network, where the only thing an attacker would want to do is zombi-ize your windows boxes. strong passwords are good, firewalls are good, wifi mac address lock down is good, but smartcards? why not requier a hair sample.
Also, if you are that paranoid, you better put in a shark-filled mote, because a physical attack still leaves you volnerable, and with those insane levels of security, you sort of make yourself a target, people figure that if you go to those lengths, you have something great...
Would the **AA allow such a thing in the USA? jes, they DO control tech to a certin extent - and it is my belefe that they and others like them are the reason home users cant get any real upload streams here, 128 or 256 if you are lucky is the tops here...and running _any_ server is a no-no - hummmm...I wonder why?
Is this not the textbook case that a class action law suit was made for, a large group of people have been essentialy baited and switched on a VERRY VERRRRRY costly peice of equipment, knowingly making it faulty (i.e. proformance was less than advertised or implied)?
Or could this be the DMCA buster that we have all been waiting for, lets say that some pro somewhere makes a hack and gets sued by Nicon, the photogropher could say that the encryption violated his copy right, and use rights. The camera maker has no right to lock down the owners own content.
Wonder how much racketeering, blackmail and bribery went into this law...With saleries of sub-$200.000 ask yourself how can senators and congress cridders afford their lavish lifestyle,
I wonder why the state is providing internet access anyway - the payphones were put in place bu the phone companies, CB radio makes sence for public safety reasons, but public internet? Whewn the schools have to decide weather to cut music or sports, why are we making municiple broadband wireless a priority?
The MPAA has done 180s before when it comes to tech, look at their complete change of face on the VCR and video industry after the famed surpreme court case.
There is 200 or more ysars of prior art here, Every technique has been done, from PB on both slices, th crimping, to cutting the crust...If this can get a patent in the first place, well, maybe I should try to patent the process of taking a shit and sue EVERYONE, it makes as much sence.
I see a running theme of "it was too harsh" in these posts, but there are two things that are being ignored:
1: He was stealing the bandwidth and cpu time of the networks to whom the spam was sent. How much jail time is a stolen CPU cycle worth? Well that brings me to my second point:
2: Most slashdotters (myself included) and the IT industry in general have hated spammers since...well...at least the mid 90s, but particularly and justifiably so in the last few years. With such comments as "these spammers need to be tossed in jail like the theives that they are!" as our war cry - now we have got our wish, do we like it? I do but if you don't, then be carefull what you wish for because you might just get it.
Oh Dear!!! That is SHOCKING! What is next: Most people don't understand a word that their shade-tree mechanic is saying to them about their car? It is called jargon, every field has it, get over it.
Why does no one (big company or university) sue the ISPs that let own3d boxez and zombies connect and stay connected? if the ISPs looked for the zombis and told those users how to be good "netizens", and offered a CD of EASY TO USE removal software, the spam problem would disappear over night, without bots, no one could send 100,000,000 emails per day.

Aims at foot
Pulls trigger
Screams bloody murder at the sight and feeling of the mess on the floor
It is doomed to fail as long as the asian black market doesnt go under...which is less likely than MS going under.
One question though, When LongHorn comes out, will we all have hood orniments like Boss Hog from the Dukes of Hazzard?
