Have you ever met a true musician? You know - those that actually are good, and make music for a living, not only a boy/girl with a guitar or a "Home studio" in moms basement.

Music is ALL about the FEEL. And musicians are often very visual as well as aural, they tend to really LOVE their hardware, and by hardware I mean their Guitars, saxophones, trumpets, drumset, keyboard, violins and whatever floats your boat. In fact - it's almost like a girlfriend or boyfriend to some, this instrument makes them feel they can perform, it's a trusted friend - it's a companion - it's something you wouldn't let go for dear life!

So when you see all these controls and knobs, it is intended to give the user complete VISUAL control and emulate the "unplugged" feel of the electromechanical gear that costs a FORTUNE if you actually want the real thing (like external mixers, harddisk track recorders, Tascams, keyboards, sound-modules etc.). It just makes you FEEL better, that there's something there - real hardware - that you can touch, control and FEEL.

But that taught me to always back up my stuff. I remember often making 5-10 backups of my machine language experiments on the C64, this is a habit that has followed me into the modern age.

I think that's testimony to our times, things work so well that people don't experience losses before it's too late, so they don't feel the natural need to protect their stuff.

    >>If you were earning $500/mo in the States, you would NOT have a house of your own and plenty of food. You would be living in a cardboard box under a bridge and eating out of dumpsters. Get real, broham.

That's an uneducated utterance, simply because you cannot dictate how I live, nor can you know it, all you can do is assume that what I inform you of is either untrue or true.

Here's an example. (the very truth, in my case): I own the house, my property taxes are roughly 300$ a year, thats less than 30 bucks a month. Food is roughly 100 bucks a month, can be 150 if I stretch it and eat really well. I pay utility bills like everyone else, one month I have to pay for garbage collection, that's roughly 100 bucks too, but it's only 4 times a year, so that comes down to 25$ a month. Then it's water and sewage costs - roughly the same. Insurance is the most expensive part, and cost me 450$ a year. So my total costs don't even exceed 500$ a month.

I don't pay a mortgage - because the house is already mine, no bank loans - and no debt.

This can be hard to understand (I live in Sweden btw, one of the highest taxed places on earth), but we do have some advantages, purchasing a house roughly 2 hours away from any major city is usually dirt cheap. I paid roughly 54K usd (yes fifty four thousand!) for my house 7 years ago, and it's a 3 story BRICK house! I bet you could get a decent trailer (mobile home) for that in certain places in the US, or a free fixer-upper in Detroit...what do I know? I just know my reality - the one I live every day.

  13. You got to look at the reasons behind outsourcing on New Data On H-1B Visas Prove That IT Outsourcers Hire a Lot But Pay Very Little (qz.com) · · Score: 1

Here in Sweden, we have had an outsourcing problem for many years too, this isn't unique to the U.S. in any way, shape or form - it's just got more attention because "USA".

People want a big salary, they've become accustomed to high salaries and do not want to change their lifestyle. What about electronics? We're living in times were you can purchase a huge 50 inch flat screen TV for 300 bucks or less, electronics gadgets are almost ludicrously cheap - and salaries at an all time high. Our standard of living has never in history been any better than it is now, and we got a new form of 1st world disease called "comfort issues".

Heh, Europe is no better. There's a so called "poverty" standard, that says that if you earn less than roughly 700$ per month, then you're below the poverty limit. I've seen people beg on the street corners for money, rags for clothes - and they don't even have an income, what do we call those then?

In Sweden - people are used to a certain income, anything less than 120 SEK an hour - is pure poverty according to them (that's around 15$ for you Americans). I saw a program series on TV we have here called "Lyxfallan" roughly translated as The Luxury trap/money trap. It's about singles or couples that have overspent, and are now trapped in debt they "can't" get out of by themselves. I saw this woman that was on TV crying her mascara off - "I don't know what to do, no one can live below 2000$ a month, I'm so poor - this is hopeless". Wow - just wow.

I live in a freaking HOUSE of my own, and I sometimes worked hard as a substitute teacher and sometimes I had to live on my savings, sometimes I only get 500$ a month to live on - but I survive - without ANY debt. How? I save, I don't need the latest "border-less" big-screen TV, I'm fine with my 9 year old 47" tv which is still pretty darn good and big. I purchase second hand furniture, I purchase food in bulk, and watch out for coupon sales. Am I poor? According to some authorities I'm supposed to be dirt-poor in their eyes, but I feel crazy rich since I got my entire house, property and all the food I can eat.

And that's the problem with our society today, no one is willing to compromise on their living standards, daughter gotta have the latest iPhone, right? Otherwise she'll be the laughing stock of the entire school, right? Wrong! No one NEEDS the latest and greatest, what we do need though - is to get our stuff together, realize that if we WANT jobs to STAY in our country, we need to adjust to the times we live in.

  14. It should be obvious by now.

The U.K. Gov. wants total control of their citizens. They've shut the borders now, makes it a little easier to see and control who's going anywhere or who stays in their country, not to mention - WHO gets to stay there.

Internet & telephone usage information storage, mandated by law. Just so anything you say CAN and WILL be used against you, if so need be. CCTV monitoring everywhere (U.K. has the worlds largest CCTV monitoring system).

The "if you got nothing to hide, then you don't have to worry" fallacy is a sentence made to mislead the feeble minded. Because anyone with at least half a brain understand that information is power. You're displeased with the place you work, so you talk to your friends about this, you email, you chat online with them. Now what if that employer were government, and someone was looking into you, and then got this information? Do you honestly think they'd improve your life? They would do what THEY THINK is BEST for THEMSELVES, and you'd essentially be screwed.

Not to mention how we as humans judge each other every day of our life. Oh, that kid is no good because his father did something wrong, or there must be something wrong with "Susan" because her mother was under psychological treatment back in 1984. Even tho there is nothing wrong with her today, this kind of digging into families lives - will essentially destroy them.

I'm simply astonished that the population of U.K. are willingly accepting a government like that.

I'm almost in my 50s. I love technology, even old school tech, especially my trusty old but simple Commodore 64. Vr has been on/off during my life, I remember them back in the 90s as an arcade machine with an Amiga 3000 inside it, super choppy graphics, super laggy - but it gave us an idea of what we could expect.

The lack of realistic immersion is the reason it didn't take off back the.

Well, today - we're ALMOST there, in a sense we are actually already there - but the entry price is simply TOO expensive for the general public. I bought the HTC Vive over a year ago (I deselected the Rift because I simply don't like the monitoring/surveillance policy of the Facebook company. Otherwise I might very well have chosen the Rift.

But I'm very happy I didn't - because it turns out that the VIVE is actually something of a revolution that would come to change VR as we see it forever, it came with the Lighthouse system - which is completely superior to ALL of those other VR solutions that are mostly camera based positioning devices that simply cannot give you the same detail of immersion that the Lighthouse system provides you with. There was even a professor documenting just HOW precise the Vive Lighthouse system is, it's laser & infra red light based, you might say it "paints" a super-fine super-thin net of rays that 20-30 sensors in each device will pick up and "time" exactly the position of, and he found it to be as precise as 0.3 mm. yes, that's better than a 1/3 of a millimeter in MID AIR. No HD camera can give you that kind of precision - period.

Valve launched a bunch of free demo games called The Lab. Those are unfortunately STILL (over a year later) some of the absolutely best games available for the HTC Vive today, maybe it's because of their incredible programming team and their endless resources, whereas the Unity single-man-coders out there don't stand a chance of giving us an AAA title, so the games over the year has became a little more "indie" and carries that stigma with it when you're playing with the HTC, you're not truly experiencing it's true power (unless you're playing for example XorteX 26xx (which is a simple bullet hell game in immersing 3D) arcade style, but has a real time quality to it that is still unsurpassed by ANY other game like it, space pirate training comes somewhat close - but still...is Meh....in the long run as you're basically just waiting for a bunch of round robots to come up and aim at you over and over again. XorteX provides you with an immersion, puts you right smack in the middle of a good old 80s type arcade game - and make it so believable that your dreaming will never quite be the same again. I wish developers understood the appeal of this, it's hard I guess.

Another one, is the spectacular graphics quality of the game where you toss parts of GlaDOS (the talkative robotic heads/units), and aim them at the warehouse stock in order to make them come tumbling down with a bang, this game is hilarious - and the graphics is still unsurpassed, not even Raw-Data (albeit very GPU and CPU intensive) comes close to in quality. Valve should get on their horses and do more of this stuff, this is what we need.

But yeah, besides the 800$ (I paid 1300$ when I bought it) you need for the Vive - you also need an INSANE super-pc, Mine cost like 4000$, and it "just runs" Raw Data to a playable level (the new Crysis for VR).

I don't use it much, in the beginning it was like 2-4 hours each day (trust me, you'll sweat like a pig if you use it more), but here's my 2 cents why I haven't sold mine yet - Because it's very amusing entertainment that isn't meant to be used as a monitor.

Did you hear me VR naysayers? The technology is here - it's not just a thing you'd use 8 hours a day.

It's not meant to replace your monitor, at best - I'd say it'll give you 1 hour of entertainment every day, pretty much like a TV, just very much more involving. Games like Raw Data - will give you more workout than you ever will get sitting in front of a monitor.

Nope, ain't selling mine yet - but not all VR are created equally. It will come down in price eventually - and perhaps then, we'll see way more AAA titles.
