This is a good development. I've bought counterfeit software by accident before--companies rarely give you any sort of compensation and demand you send them the media. Screw that, eh?

  7. Re:MMOPG on MMOG Expansions Incoming · · Score: 0

I could plug khMUD (the codebase I'm working on), but I'll pass on that. MUDs involve a greater degree of practice and--I think, at least--to be successful on a MUD you have to be a good bit brighter than the usual MMO gamer. If your MUD is a roleplaying one, it can greatly help your English skills; I've been playing a couple of MUDs continuously for about seven years and more or less as a direct result of it my typing has greatly improved, as has my English.

  8. Ah, USB. on The Ins and Outs of USB · · Score: 0

TFA makes some good points. However, the bit about A ports being plugged in upside down makes me go "erk?". The bit of plastic inside the metal sleeve of the plug only allows it to go in one way. You'd have to seriously force it. And nobody likes hearing their USB ports go crunch.

However, he's got a point in that it's hard to tell which way is up. My computers don't have front-panel USB ports and I have to fiddle with them in order to get them to work. Yes, USB plugs have the little holes in one side, but that's really not enough to work properly.

I've got some experience writing drivers for USB peripherals (wrote my own iPod driver for Windows 98, because I'm a curmudgeon) and I agree fully with him when he says that wireless using the USB spec has promise. It may be a bit odd to implement, but it could potentially be a godsend. As they stand, wireless devices usually need a base station of some sort, and at least 3/4 of the ones I've used suck.

Insane - hell, okay, you've got to be somewhat insane to write science fiction, it comes with the territory.

Christian - Oh my God, he's a Mormon. How dare he.

Homophobe - Here's the problem. See, that little article you quote says that he's against the federal courts more or less making laws. I would agree with that, even though homosexual marriages don't bother me. If he was homophobic as you claim, I seriously doubt that he'd treat homosexual characters as benevolently and well as he does (Earthfall comes to mind).

    So, uh--smile! You're wrong!

  15. Nothing bests FF6? on Genre-Defining Games? · · Score: 0

Sticking just with consoles, two series come to mind that wallop the tar out of every FF game. Granted, these are from 32-bit systems, but the LUNAR games started on the Sega CD and were still better games.

-Suikoden I/II (Please ignore III and IV, they're the inbred cousins we don't talk about). 108 characters, all of which actually have some value to your party (unlike...say...Relm), deep storylines, and storylines that actually respond to the player. Unlike the FF games, which are on rails and thoroughly nonresponsive to the player.

-LUNAR: Silver Star Story Complete and LUNAR: Eternal Blue Complete. They're on rails, and the combat is somewhat outdated--but if you don't find the LUNAR stories to be up there with the most touching you've ever played, I can't do anything but shake my head.
