  1. In Korea... on Kids Say Email is Dead · · Score: 2, Funny

  2. Why Microsoft Fears Virtualisation on Microsoft Pleads With Consumers to Adopt Vista Now · · Score: 5, Insightful

Part of Microsoft's success is the fact that Windows is everywhere, it provides a foundation for everything else to run on the majority of desktops, and if you want to use popular desktop programs, more often than not it's going to be Windows-only, and thus whether you like Windows or not you have to use it. Windows was in your face, all the time, and it can't be discarded (dual-booting is an option but it's actually rather inconvenient, especially if you want to run two things that require two different OSs at the same time).

Cheap, efficient virtualisation totally throws most of the downsides of multiple OS booting out the window (no pun intended). Suddenly you could run Linux or OS X as your desktop and totally ignore Windows until you need to run a Windows program. Windows thus goes from the Master Control Program of your computer to just some shared library that a program loads in order to run. This represents a loss of control over the user, and the one thing Microsoft fears the most is the loss of power, regardless of how small the loss is.

Microsoft loves your money, but it loves your obedience even more. Being able to discard Windows from your sight when you don't require it means you're not being a good little Windows user. Therefore, you deserve to be punished, hence the licensing restrictions.

  3. Feh, just reduce the price on Photoshop Online Within Six Months · · Score: 1

For OS X is good, for Linux even better. But either way, just reduce the price and I'm sure they'd get more users.

In Malaysia, the ipod isn't terribly popular. Sure some folks have them, but it's rare. A lot of people do own an mp3 player, but it's usually of varied brands. The reason is that ipods are just too expensive for the average youth to own, and there is no iTunes service to download music from over in this part of the world.

Oh but think about it, if Etch gets released before Vista, Debian (the distro infamous for glacially slow release cycles) will have released three times between the last 2 versions of desktop Windows.

So to all the "Linux sucks on the desktop, Windows pwns all" naysayers, even the slowest-releasing distro is improving at a rate faster than Windows. Say what you like about desktop Linux now, but it's one hell of a fast moving target, and it's only getting better.

  14. Debian's demise has been fortold for years on Trouble on the Debian Front? · · Score: 2, Informative

Especially when Ubuntu was released, everyone thought Debian was "dead" or "irrelevant", despite Ubuntu being based off Debian.

However, Debian's release cycle is picking up the pace, as Etch is set to be released soon (a quicker release cycle than Sarge's). Things are looking good as far as a mere user like me is concerned. There are a lot of hardworking people working on Debian, and the politicking is nothing new.

  15. Re:You described the goals of the LGPL, not the GP on Misconceptions About the GPL · · Score: 4, Insightful
By a developer making his libraries "free" only under the GPL (and not a more free license like the MIT/BSD or even LGPL), then he's forcing anyone that wants to use this shiny tool to also make their software free under the same restrictions. That is why the GPL is "viral" -- not because it "infects" any software that it is stored next to -- but rather because GPL code is useless unless you're working on other GPL'd code.
I hate to tell you this unhappy truth, but the way the world works is that you can't distribute the copyrighted works of others without their consent. If that consent comes by the terms of the GPL, you just have to honour it. The GPL does not preclude you from obtaining their consent for redistribution under another license by explicitly contacting them, nor does it force you to somehow lose your copyright and licensing rights on your own code. Even when you violate the GPL by distributing a derivitive work under a proprietary license, you *STILL OWN THE COPYRIGHT* on the portions of code you wrote. What you *can't* do distribute the portion of code which *DOES NOT BELONG TO YOU* under the terms of another license. Sure, you are "forced" to follow copyright law in this respect, but is it really as unreasonable as you're tring to make it sound? After all, nobody is forcing you to use the GPLed code in the first place.

You know why that was? That's right. It's because Windows was open source back then. It had to be. Because there's NO WAY it could be otherwise if they used a "commercial software model".
