Doesn't anybody else see it? The whole purpose of the insulation was to prevent the shedding of ICE during launch. If you put the tank into the booster, there's no need to insulate it since the ice shedding isn't an issue.
The other thing is that all they are doing is getting us set up for a man rated version of the Atlas V or the big Delta. This is a push from the dumb booster crowd to take over the manned launch capabilities also
BUT all those people bent on doing it will have that much easier a time as well. Terrorists seem to be well funded and this lowers the bar from the person needed being a one of a kind researcher to a one in a million person. it DOES make it more achieveable
in the hands of the wrong person, this allows any idiot to design a better plague. Why do people always see these things in the light of how it will be GOOD and never the downside. Do we really need easier bioterrorism?
It removes the need to carry oxidizer for a portion of the flight. This weight savings offsets the other technology needed. it is a weight savings over doing it all with rocket power, just as the air breathing jet technology is a savings at the low end (and which can't get you above Mach 3). This all translates into more payload for a given amount of fuel.
That said, it is obvious the only near term use of this is going to be military where this will be used in a missile defense system as an interceptor. I agree with others that the military should have funded this from the beginning
I think that unionizing IT would have the same overall effect it has had on manufacturing. More of the work would get done in asia by people who are willing to work for less money in countries where the union holds no influence.
and this would be different than what's currently happening with outsourcing how?
BTW: Most large companies have a careerpath that takes people along a road to promotions. Many have milestones that are required to make it to the next level. Many of those milestones are measurable and some include mentoring programs. And if your mentored student doesn't "catch on" you don't step up. I'm seeing exactly this with my daughter within the Lotus division of IBM. and it was like that when I was contracting there years ago.
Well, the reason we're worth 50-60% of where we were 5 years ago is BECAUSE there are people out of work that would be willing to take a deeper cut in pay to be employed. This is certainly true in the northeast. And let's not talk about the lack of raises. The market has slumped and is very flat and a lot of good people are still unemployed or under-employed. It's gone from a seller's market in the 90s to a buyers market now, and there isn't a lot of buying going on.
Windows are for passengers, just paint them over and use video to see outside instead. They are already rated at flying IFR anyway. Make the cockpit just like the simulators they fly for all their training.
is this an attempt at low cost steganography detection? Check to see if the image has been modified in some quick scan? If so, it will be defeated quickly
Well, they'd better tighten up the radars to deal with it else they've just given an off the shelf solution to interfering with these radars, and told interested parties about it.
Consider the impact of a Beowulf cluster of these!

I got a real laugh out of this paragraph:
"Michelson said he is developing a flapping robot, called the entomopter, that will use bursts of gas, a byproduct of the device's chemical propulsion system, to adjust the amount of lift provided by each of the robot's twin sets of wings."
What's the fuel? Chili?
This stuff has been going on with the 80s but it looks like they've finally gotten close to some results.
A station wagon full of magtapes still have the largest bandwidth
I'm a resident too and think this will be great. Big thumbs up.

The stubby wings are to allow it to auger in more dramatically on failure.
Any doubt of the purpose will be enlightened by the first flights being in 2008, and election year
I thought everybody used DEADBABE... no? Guess I'm safe for a while...
doh!
How else would geeks get laid!

If they already have a PC to run the pirated software on, why do they need a cheaper one?

Can't someone find SCO code in the leaked Microsoft sources? That would keep them both busy!

5 times the minimum wage. Once you pass that magic number you're exempts from getting time and a half
I couldn't resist :)

Sometimes it's not the speed of the car as much as the quality of the ride
