Why should geeks have rights to use and view their content that others don't have? You either need to have unbreakable DRM (unlikely) or no DRM you can't create classes and segment your users. I hate how geeks feel like they are better than everyone else because they can circumvent systems.

When you understand the differences between electron microscope and computers and why one has its own dicipline you can more clearly see the value of CS. Sorry to be so loquacious.

computer science is incredibly valuable as a profession, but not because it makes you a good programmer. It is a framework for thinking about the world that focuses on abstraction, compartmentalization, and procedure. These are very important things to be able to do, and serve you well in many areas beyond programming. I think the problem is that computer scientists only view themselves as programmers. There is no reason why computer science students shouldn't see a career in business, or even theology. The profession has boxed itself in for too long, but the framework of thought that computer science teaches is valuable in many areas outside of programming and its time to encourage people to branch out.

In my opinion this patent is incredibly obvious as well. It would be like patenting medical software that seperates its users into Dr.s, Nurses, and patients. Of course thats where the distinctions are, its the way these insitutions are structured.

I am most excited about it because I am looking for an ipod that I can happen to make phone calls on when I need to. I really hate cell phones and think theyre annoying. The iPhone looks to meet my needs because it still seems to be an iPod first, and happens to be the best smart phone out there (or soon to be).

There are other environmental effects besides CO2 emmisions that need to be considered. For instance, while coal may be clean, it comes from mountain top removal mining (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mountaintop_removal) , which is highly destructive. We may have a lot of coal here in the US, but we may level the Apalachain mountains to get to it. We really need to look beyond coal as a viable solution even if it doesn't directly release CO2 into the air.

Im surprised that it took off for windows (ie outside of the mac faithful) without decent software to manage the iPod. Apple was selling 'windows formatted' iPods without a decent solution because people wanted them that badly, myself included.

I think discussion of the iPods success should be focused around how it succeeded and reached a critical mass, before the entire iPod ecosystem developed around it. Its obviously the choice now becuase it is THE player but how did it get started like that. I mean, I hated mac stuff then but still got the iPod.
