anybody here see "pirates of silicon valley" or whatever it was called, the story about the rise of Bill Gates & Steve Jobs ? I know it's just a movie and maybe it's not true in every detail but that one scene where Jobs is tossing out frisbees to all his minions on the beach was pretty spooky, 'Power hungry Megalomanic!' Is what I was thinking at the time.. seems I was right.
I'd feel cheated if I were a shareholder in Microsoft. Look at what a small group of volunteers has done with Enlightenment in basically the same time frame.. Okay, it's not a perfectly fair comparison, Microsoft has to deal with hardware/driver/etc issues and a crazy amount of users and platforms. But for the amount of resources they have on hand to build a new operating system, they could have come up with something better than this. I'll be waiting for Enlightenment DR17 in the meantime.
haha ya right.. that'll happen real soon:) I'm willing to bet my toenail shavings that Adobe will be using the DMCA to persecute someone in a high-profile case within 8 months.
Can I have my social security number replaced legally ? I don't know for sure, but I suspect my number is just about worthless now. Hell, sometimes we don't here about these thefts till months or years later. That leads me to work under the assumption that my SS# has been stolen, from someone , somewhere.. it's utterly worthless (not that it had any value before, my credit was crapped out anyways.)
Something needs to be done about this, SS#'s are a joke. I was watching the local chicago news the other day and migrant workers can go down to the local 7-11, meet a shady character and have their own SS#, for $75-$100.. Come on, this is nuts.
" So the police make a bunch of arrests among large crowds of people then drop the charges later.
I really don't have a problem with that."
No, what happened was, police were making arrests & making up phony charges that the accused parties had never committed, and then the DA tried to prosecute those crimes by manipulating video evidence. Had they presented the entire video evidence uncut, their case against the accused parties would have collapsed. Luckily, third parties filming the same events from the sidelines jumped in and showed exactly what happened (Peaceful demonstrators being rounded up for no bloody reason. Some of them weren't even demonstrators, just locals walking home.)
Willful and deliberate treachory on the part of the cops and da.
off-topic ? Blah.. that's completely on-topic.. Oh, we're only supposed to talk about the evils of the RIAA ? Okay, my mistake, I assumed police corruption was a on-topic since that's what the story is suggesting...
Unless people are surprised to hear that the RIAA is pushing ethical boundaries.. ya, right.
Living in New York is an expensive lifestyle. But on the other hand, New York cops really seem to enjoy themselves when it comes to corruption. Take for example last year's Republican convention. New York Cops did their best to round up thousands of people, stick them in an asbestos contaminated concentration camp and then charge them with crimes they never committed.
Google the story, hundreds of cases have been dropped because the Police were inventing stories that never happened and then having the DA charge innocent people with full knowledge.
that slashdot is on the intel payroll too. people talk about the giant marketing machine intel operates, i just wish all of their lackeys would be a little more open about their financial relationship with the cpu juggernaut.
oh btw, amd made a real dual cpu release yesterday... You can actually buy the chip, unlike intel's paper release just a few days ago (ya, that was a really desperate marketing effort.) But at least slashdot gives intel the last laugh.
to exclude computer programs from patentability while allowing computer-controlled technical inventions to be patented.
They sound like one in the same to me. A computer controls my web browser and it certainly is a technical invention to *some* degree. So this would enjoy patent protection and it wouldn't at the same time.
Or are they just trying to talk about heart-beat monitors and stuff like that ? They should be more clear otherwise it sounds like a recipe for disaster.
I know everybody here on slashdot is overjoyed at this decision but I'm very skeptical. This is only one particular government responding to a sentiment that may only last 5 years. Maybe in a decade Indians will be rabid capitalists foaming at the mouth looking for ways to monopolize the world around them.
What's needed is an amendment to their constitution that clearly states "Patent protection in computer software will not be afforded in this country now, tomorrow or ever, so the great Hindu god said !"
This would be the ideal solution imho, as it creates an uphill struggle for selfishly greedy capitalists to overturn a constitutional amendment. Far more difficult than just bribing a few politicians to get their way, which can happen tomorrow... in that case, this article is pointless.
Come to think of it, shouldn't we do something like this in our own nations ? Look at what's happening in europe, they just keep reintroducing the same tired legislation every 6 months.. Eventually they will win.
Google uses one cookie that never expires, and it crosses all their services (one cookie for gmail, web searches, image searches, maps, etc.) And then there is google toolbar which is even more viral in nature. Yes, each time you type something into google websearch, each of your queries is stored and associated with your cookie.
They don't know who you are though right ? Well.. maybe not you, but thats where gmail comes in. Most people will enter their real names/addy's/etc..
Unless you reject cookies from google outright, they can learn a lot about you. The colour of shirts you like to wear, what cpu manufacturer you prefer, what ideas you had for mother's day presents, everything concerning your sexuality, your political leanings (left, right, fascist, communist.)
Give them a few years and their database of profiles will be awsome.. I just hope their not working in concert with any covert u.s. government institutions.
Google maps on the other hand is great tool that's really easy to use. Unfortunately the satellite imagery feature is really lacking. At first I was thinking 'this is great, I'll be able to explore the world because the google interface is so easy to use.' It's too bad 90% of the u.s. isn't mapped with satellite imagery in google, at least not where it can be zoomed into... it's mostly blurred out:(
Even at maximum zoom, the resolution offered by google images doesn't compare to terraserver... I in no way endorse terraserver but their database seems to be _far_ more comprehensive. Too bad it doesn't work in Firefox... but thats standard microsoft operating procedure isn't it.
Really, I don't disagree with your assessment that all governments are rotten, corrupt and power hungry institutions. But that's not the same as saying they are all dangerous. The Canadian government *could* be dangerous.. but on a global scale of 1 to 10, I'd rate it a 2. Whereas the u.s. goverment is dangerous and it's proving to us right now how out of control it is.
War with Iran will start fairly soon and George Bush "has war on his mind." He leads a great nation, I've visited the u.s. many times and loved every bit of it, but I have very little confidence that george bush understands the responsibility that he holds as president of the u.s. and to the world (ie. Nuclear & Economic power.) The game he's involved in is way out of his league..
I just hope there are safeguards to prevent that brain damaged lunatic from using the nuclear button.
that the u.s. is the biggest fucking terrorist nation on the planet. You think they'd be happy brutalizing the people of iraq, causing fear and uncertainty in latin america, threatening the global economy with their insane spending and now this.. terrorizing other nations networks.
Whats the difference, they terrorize their own nation and people with with the "War on Drugs" lunacy. Is this a game for them ?
Sorry about that, I was probably a little too harsh as you say. Maybe I should congratulate the dev team for their release and offer up some code instead of complaining.
I've taken a look at the screenshots and this game still looks like it's stuck in 1989. Is the game engine they're using remained the same over all these years ?
I'm sure the gameplay & strategy is up there but these graphics are not the kind of thing that'll attract users to the platform:(
off-topic ? sort of,, at least mod it down with something else because it's slightly on topic:) The Stargate is a superconducting ring, the ancients build the thing, induce massive joules of energy into and it flows forever without loss. Not sure how that guy built a the equivalent in Carter's basement though:D

Is not really 4.. The question itself is racist.
I prefer to have access to the pink-balance information for the woman that is home alone.

Looks like Nikon's goofy encryption has been broken.
Oh, here's a link to dcraw which will blast through Nikon's bullshit.
heh, believe me I'm tempted.

another story related to the new york DA editing/manipulating video tapes

Oh, check this out,
White House satellite photo from google. Blurred out.
Now look at this.. *lol*
Naval Base.
Ya, lets blur out the white house but give detailed photos of probably the biggest naval base in America ? heh
Will holographic images of porn be visible on the back side of the disc ?
