They should have an International Virus Standards Committee, so that we can waste lots of time and money deciding what the next virus should be named...
My point is, who cares what it's named! A mass mailing worm is just that. Shouldn't matter if you call it "Blackworm" or "You got f'ed in the a". If it walks like a duck and talks like a duck...
Therefore getiing XP to boot natively won't happen. There is still a chance at booting Windows Vista though, as it supports EFI. The only thing to overcome is the ACPI requirement that Vista has. The intel chip and mobo inside the iMacs stupport ACPI, but of course it has been removed from Apple's version of EFI. Find a way to get ACPI support onto the Mactel's EFI, and you should be able to have a dual boot config with Windows Vista.
So I guess dedicating some entire subnets to pornography is completely out of the question at this point. Though I think that if we've had a better planning of the Internet, we could have placed adult content on certain designated subnets, and then our constitutional rights would not be up for debate with millions of taxpayers dollars wasted yet again on some stupid trial.
It's too late for such a thing to happen now that the infrastructure is set up and pr0n sites are everywhere. As impracticle as placing adult content on designated subnets is (e.g. we sould have to have every country in the world on board, which just wouldn't happen. And even if it did happen, you would have to have some viable way of enforcing subnet restrictions to pr0n sites) it would make filtering out adult material a snap by setting up your own proxy server that blocks the entire subnet.
It's too bad that the world doesn't work this way, and that the pornography industry is far too powerful to ever agree to something like that, which would probably hurt their business.
...And then of course this whole debate could have been avoided in the first place, if we didn't elect such a moron into office. Constantly trying to overstep his bounds and combining church and state. *sigh* Just three more years...
So then I guess they learned that the copper in the pennies was worth more then the actual penny too. I remember cutting Canadian pennies open in the late 1990's and they were still solid copper.
Last I checked the Canadian pennies are still all pure copper. I say melt it down and sell it back to them for the ultimate friendly neighbour burn. It would make for a good story at the UN meetings.
Seeing as how the use of the word 'annoy' is troubling, because what's annoying to one person may not be annoying to someone else. I guess when we start flame wars from now on we need to use our real names. They should call this new law "No Guts, No Glory" or "Ballz Law".
Thanks for clearing up my question and thanks for having the guts to not AC it. Now that I look at all of the topic logos, there are a few that have the artistic expression that you mention. None of them are the Opertaing System logos though, except of course for Windows.
Thanks for clearing that up. I find it hard to believe that Microsoft would threaten to sue over something like that. Then again, it is Microsoft we're talking about. And yes I notice the strong dislike for MS around here, and maybe since the negitivity helps paint Microsoft in a bad light, that's probably why they threatened slashdot.
Apparently, if you discuss this topic you get modded a troll. I don't care, I thought that it was a legitimate question to ask. We have the logo from Apple, and they never threaten slashdot. Maybe because all the fanbois kiss Apple's butt around here.
I love how the Slashdot Windows logo is a broken window, but all of the other OSes on this site have prefectly legit logos representing their topics. Must be a shout-out to all the Windows haters out there... Could we get a legit logo for Windows topics here? Something like this?
I was under the impression that the LILO boot loader was antiquated, and that GRUB had more features, doesn't need reconfiguring after recompiling the Kernel, and can boot a wider variety of OSes. Does anyone know if LILO still ships with the newer Linux distros? Ubuntu, Fedora Core, etc.
Will not happen at least for another 30 years if it even happens at all. The nanotube technology is here now, but designing useful components will still take time, as well as a decent fab process. Then you have to convert (intel, AMD, IBM, etc. factories to fab these devices). This will cost billions and billions of dollars to do, and they will only do so, when it is deemed profitable. Let's not forget that the driving force behind adapting new technology is profit.
This may never even happen. There are countless other possibilities for nanotubes, and the main problem seems to be just what exactly do we focus on using them for.
Does anybody remember how long it took for the transition from QWERTY to Dvorak to be completed? Oh wait, it never happened! You can consider the transition from Silicon fab to Nanotech to be much the same.
Besides the fact that Blu-ray is DRMed up the ass (which is exactly why the Movie industry loves it) it's a technically superior format to begin with. Of course this format war could be over before a winner is even decided if the halographic discs become a reality, then that will spell the demise for optical storage as we know it anyhow. I dunno though, it just seems like distributing Blu-ray bundled in with the PS3 is the perfect market penetration. It seems more likely to me that Sony could saturate the market with PS3 long before everyone buys a new PC bundled with HD-DVD hardware and Vista.
Well, besides the fact that IE is full of security holes, every Operating System ships with a default browser.
Windows = Internet Explorer
OS X = Safari
Solaris = Netscape?
Ubuntu Linux = Firefox
Fedora Core = Firefox
etc. Anyway, my point was that we shouldn't single out Microsoft here, it seems necessary to supply at least some sort of default browser preinstalled. That said, it is irritating that you can only use IE for Microsoft Update, and perhaps this should be were the antitrust lawsuits can draw the line. I would like to be able to use any browser I want for my system update. Stupid ActiveX.

Mr. Dvorak is now in his dotage. Although I have to admit, he gave it the old college try with his keyboard, but it will never take off. Oh wait, that was August Dvorak. Nevermind. This guy just writes bad articles.
why the EU has this kind of power over Microsoft? I thought that Microsoft is a U.S. based company that must obey U.S. laws. Anyway, not that I'm a Microsoft fanboi or anything, but while I do see a tremendous upside to Microsoft providing documentation to enable (better) interoperbility with other Operating Systems, I also see a huge downside. A downside where it's even easier to create viruses and worms that cripple Windows, given an intimate knowledge of it's propritary inner workings. I am just playing devil's advocate here. I would be all for Microsoft to share some knowledge with us, as it could make the computing world that much nicer, but I don't think it will ever happen.
Now it's down to Seagate and Western Digital as far as quality Hard Drives go. It seems to me that just about every OEM you can buy ships with a cheap Maxtor HD. Will Seagate continue the Maxtor line, or will they dump them and continue to make quality hard drives in place of Maxtor? I think the wost case senerio would have Seagate slapping Seagate stickers on top of Maxtor-quality Hard Drives. Yikes, that would be bad for Seagate's image IMO.

That's right. Once you get the Kama Sutra, you're fucked!

No no no. Buddy Icons must mean that AIM is on the way... w00t! n00b pwned! Shoutout to my hax0rs.
I'd love to see the first case go to trial. It would be a complete circus.

Don't visit untrusted pr0n sites on a Windows machine. Make a Linux partition for such things.
