Looking for a good script for techie film, I suggest Hollywood ppl look into the book Cukoo's Egg,Tracking a Spy Through the Maze of Computer Espionage.
The tale took you through Berkeley, AT&T, FBI, NSA, Germany, Russian spy, and the early ages of internet. Yes, telnet, modem, tymnet,.mil domain name were mentioned.
It also seems that nowadays Hollywood tend to add some romance in every movie just to woo women. I very much adore the romantic scene where the author (an astronomer turned sys admin) was sewing quilt with his girlfriend and talking (or baby-talking) about how to catch the hacker. My idea of time well spent.:)
It doesn't have GNOME, but the view of VT100 serial terminal will send chills down your spine. I miss those terminals!
Seems everyone has to go through this. I bought DVD player (Kones 3000, factory made multi-region) assuming it will play CD-R (hey, isn't it just like audio CD?). Well, it's not.
CD-R disk are made of :
cyanine dye: poor chance (green)
azo dye: fair chance
phthalocyanine dye: good chance (often gold color)
It is hard to say which medium of different manufactors are using (make it VERY hard). Your best chance is avoid green CD-R and try gold ones. I know for sure CD-R from HP is phthalocyanine dye. I can play audio-CD made only from HP CD-R on my DVD player.
Normally if the DVD doesn't specify it could play CD-R, then you are on your own. I tried at least 10 different brand of CD-R finally I gave up. I returned my Kones-3000 DVD player and got a Pioneer DV-333. It is one of those who can play CD-R flawlessly. And it plays my burnt VCD on CD-R too.
1. Use space heater or electric blanket instead of central heating;
2. go see a night movie, visit bars.
3. candle light dinner
4. turn off your frig and order pizza.
5. candle light wild wild sex.
6. use computer monitor as main light source.
7. use laptop instead of desktop.
8. take one shower a day instead of two.
Actually, I think the more realistic exchange rate for people/people is 16:1.
Which means, Americans are contributing more to global population problem than africans.
Or more bluntly, 1 american baby born, 16 (or 3714) african babies must die to keep the planet in equilibrium. (as baby-specific political spin practiced by so many American politicians.)
For 2nd and 3rd voice line, they should share the same universal access number, and should be configured as phone bank style so if the 1st line is busy, automatically try 2nd line and so on.
Of course internally phone company has to map individual lines to unique numbers, in this case, the suffix driven scheme need to be amended. The idea of seperating logical and physical representation of phone numbers (universal phone number and physical phone number) is better than current 20th century system.
I think we are talking about different things here, i.e. genetic vs. enviromental effect on human behavior.
It is known that more affluent/educated people have less kids. Richer countries (Western Europeans) has lower population growth rate than 3rd world countries. So obviously the mean of production not only affects the relationship of production, but also reproduction:)
Furthermore, genetics is always used as probability, not as determistic factor on an individual. Genetics and environmental effects working together to determine a person's behavioir, are like yin and yang, or two sides of a coin, none of them can be singled out as the ONLY factor.
The whole point of encryption is giving you encrypted data AND software/algorithm.
RSA algorithm/software is widely available, yet decrypting the data is time consuming (if not impossible) so that data stays safe for its useful time peroid.
Earlier Today President Srinivas Varadun signed into law the "Neo-Indian Equal Opptunity Act", signifies a new chapter in national reconciliation.
The Neo-Indian Equal Opptunity Act, gives Indian with European and African ancestry equal rights in political, education, and economic life in our nation as Indians with Asian ancestry. European and African Indians long claimed that they were the first settlers on North America continent.
"At the begining of this new century, we are at a pivotal moment in our nation's history, " President Varadun said at the ceremony, which was held in front of Presidential Palace, overlooking New Bombay Bay Area, "The long deferred dream of European and African Indians can, and must be realised. I spoke about it in detail to the members of the Senate and House today. I will only repeat that it is a daunting challenge, requiring both rigorous effort and realistic patience."
Around 3000 European-African Indian civil right activists gathered at nearby Golden State Park and chanted "We shall overcome".

Okay, I hope I didn't offend anyone.
According to PBS NOVA show on ISS, Russian got to build Service Module because it was believed that they have life support expertise derived from Mir station.
One NASA engineer from Houston said during the interview that NASA version of life support system would be big and expensive while Russian had some smart ways to achieve same results with less time and money.
As we all know the gamble didn't pan out so well due to the Russian economic crisis. Service Module was funded by Russian goverment instead of contracted by NASA (a.k.a. American Tax dollar), so when Russian economy hit bottom, Service Module got delayed by lack of fund (among other reasons).
Just contribute what I know since there are some people here a little uptight about Russian involvement, reminded me of certain Republican congressmen and senators.
I think computer in classroom is a current fad because it's so fast to see the results. John Doe for school board campain slogan - "I put a computer in every classroom in my district, re-elect me !". Just put money down and you got computers. Bussiness likes it because they can make money off it.
So what happens next? you gotta train teachers to teach computers, so now teachers learned basics about computers (e.g. Web design), and then they look at their pay stub, and they think, "oh well, why should I stick around and get paid like a garbage man? I have a master degree for god sake." So anyone with a brain is gonna leave to double their salary.
I can not believe how little they are paying teachers these days. But increase teacher salary is not going to see immediate result, you have to consistently fund the salary until new bright college graduates find it attractive to be a teacher. And of course that's after next school board election. Phew...
Democratic election often encourages short-sighted actions. Take it with a pinch of salt.
What you read probably is from Scientist's report to Pentagon so they can get more money to fund their graduate student and publish papers, which enhance their fame and status.
You are right, but on the wrong ground. Yes, recoding hologram need absolute stillness, preferably the setup is in a basement, and on a air floated table.
But that's about writing data, you really can't selectively change only one or two bit in hologram anyway. It will be more like CD-ROM thing. The recording material (a crystal at the size of a sugar cube) being manufactured under high power (bigger) laser and you use low power laser to read it.
Holographic storage, it's a science fiction, as of now, What more can I say.
I worked on it in Grad. School 8 years ago. It seems 8 years passed by without significant progress in this field.
One major limitation is that data per page is limited to the resolution of the LCD display. The most economical supply was those computer projectors. We took it apart, tore off its polarizing plastics, and all we could get is 640x480 (maybe they make higher resolution now). You can spend BIG money and get a special designed LCD SLM, it has higher density, but they can't make it bigger. There are limitation of numbers of angles (or wavelengths) you can use to store different pages (in reality, maybe around 20, best under 100), so data size per page is really important.
Another problem is the recording material. The commercial read-out device has to be small diode laser (like CD-ROM, laser printer), so the data has to be recorded in the same frequency - RED - means low energy (like, black-and-white dark room can be illuminated with dim red light?). I never heard of anyone produced a material that could record under red, or anyone made a blue diode laser.
On the side line, if they could make R/G/B diode lasers, then we can make super-sharp projectors. TV or monitor... now that's something I want.
Well, which editor raised fuss during Wen Hoo Lee/Los Alamo case, and said "Gee, maybe we are overdoing with this China bashing thing". I'd think that's overdue.
This slashdot contributor picked 2 articles out of thousands paper/magazine in circulation and trying to establish a conspiracy theory, argument is running a little thin.
I have to clarify that communism vs. capitalism are two economical systems, and authoritarian vs. democracy are two political systems.
Economically, China is no longer a communist country. But its goverment is still authoritarian, which inevitabily, abusive and corrupt. China now is not unlike Korea, Taiwan, Indonesia and Phillipines 20 years ago. There were massacares, assassinations and censorships in those countries during 70's and 80's too (a.k.a human right problems). How come US still support them then? Is it because self-interests?
I just love hypocrites.
And I just love to hear Congressmen talking about 'thru trade export our values' to China. What a colonialist mindset. One guy from Missouri and another from Arkansas. Yeah, dixie chic values.
If we use "get it done" as "Open/Close" source yardstick, we have to find out what is to be getting done.
Is 'get it done' mean company making maximum profit? or is 'get it done' mean the consumer using a stable software? or is 'get it done' mean computer hardware and software is as easy and available as TV/microwave? or does it mean turning out products on schedule?
Open Source believes that software, like other aspect human intellectual creations, advances the fastest when the information is widely available. This is advantagous in a long run, to society as a whole, versus to a individual company next year's stock price.
Just like a bridge finished fastest or cheapest is not nessessarily the best construction. If you want invent a company and bail out after IPO, or if you are care about your next quater's stock price rather than service your customer, open source is probably not for you.

I got to use teletex on British TV set when I travelled to London. There were some first rate kick ass ASCII arts!!
Think about drawing British isles for a weather map in 100x200 ASCII chars...
I wonder what school you attend to become an ASCII artist.

Just let my imagination run wild, I wonder if US encryption export restriction may apply to an canadian company.
Can they take NT source code with restricted encryption routines with them to Canada?
I guess if they wrote brand new encryption products in Canada, they could export it anywhere, e.g. Cuba, Iraq, couldn't they.

I think it's time to convince radio ppl to use stream mp3 instead of realaudio format.
I've been recording Pacifica radio shows in mp3 (for personal use) since last year. 1 hour long show in 32 bit 44100 hz goes down roughtly 14 MB.
I heard from radio hosts that realaudio has been sending people to radio stations to help them get online. Anyone familiar with these offereings?
