I don't understad your reasoning... how would NVidia releasing their drivers, for their cards, which are obviously very hardware specific (we ARE talking about drivers here) be beneficial to ATI (whose hardware is totally different) ?
And to you second point, like I said, thats what patents are for. If NV is using X technology in their dirvers to speed up AGP operations, great. Patent it then. Doesn't stop you from opening the interface source code. Then ATI can't steal it, people can develop drivers, everyone's happy. And if ATI or anyone else comes out with a product using the same interface, sue the pants of them. This is why patents exist.
Winzip can handle gzip files just fine. For bzip, you would either have to download bzip2 for windows, or they'd have t make a self-extracting one (no big deal)
I'm not disagreeing with you, but according to the post (which you obviously didn't finish reading) that you are replying to, the guy has tested gzipp'ing RH ISO's and saved up to 80 megs. 80 megs / ISO * 2 = 160 megs.. Now I'd hardly call that ZERO download time saved.
On your comment about he hardware companys and the device drivers... Companies not releasing hardware specs to the community is the #1 reason that device support in linux is lacking. I honestly have never seen the huge deal most hardware companies have with exposing the interfaces with their products? Surely if they have some "top secret" IP, that for some unknown reason they didn't patent, it wouldn't be exposed by simply knowing he calls to interface with the operating system???
Am I totally off track here? Why do companies try so hard to protect IP that they should already have legal protection over? If NVidia has patents on its 3D accellerator design (which I am sure they do), then why do they have to continue to obfuscate it by not releasing hardware specs so poeple can write OSS drivers?
Weird, i wonder why they are limiting themselves... if i can buy a tv tuner card for my pc for 50 bucks on ebay, surely integrators like tivo or M$ could add one for the cost of 25 dollars. A 25 dollar price increase is small compared the the benefit of being able to record 2 shows!
Well that does mke sense for technophobes, but if I ended up printing off all my picures I'd just go buy a 35mm. End up with better quality (than you get with inkjets, I doubt you have a color laser), and its much cheaper when you factor in all the color ink your using. Plus everyone and their dog can take 35mm images to a photo shop and get reprints, grandmothers especially like to get this done I hear:)
From the commercials I have seen it seems UltimateTV comes with 2 tuners, so you can record 2 shows at once. I don't think normal TiVo's have this, although I think the DirecTivo's do.
At the store, they can view all the photo images on a display screen and choose any 24 images to be printed.
Excuse me, but I'm not paying 20 bucks to ent a digital camera so i can just print the pictures on some paper. If all you want is hardcopys then go buy a 35 mm camera for 20 bucks, and you're way ahead of the game. These guys need to get a clue and at least let you ave the images to a floppy.
Not likely... AT&T still has to gte its bandwidth from the telco's. They don't own them. but law says they have to sell it t them at some fixed price, which I gather is equal to the cost of the line. I doesn't matter anyways, people wont switch because it not any cheaper.
Question... Why would you spend 5x the cost of a store bought DVD player to build on yourself that s largr, uses more power, looks worse, and (without the 5.1 audio) sounds worse ?
You're way wrong here. Subtract the US and AOL has but a pittance share. Even here in Canada AOL has hardly any market penetration, even though we are bombarded with free CD's and ad campaigns. Guess what? In my province 90% f internet users get their access from the local telco. Why? Cause its faster, same price, and consumers trust them.
...and can become a Visual Databank that stores not only the images but you can names and numbers.
This is what me, and others like me, have needed FOREVER!!! I am constantly thinking "Ok, I know this person... but who is it? From where..???" This is a godsend, I'm placing my order now!
Is this some new HTSQL standard being reffered to here? WOw, I didn't know they were working on making a XUL Query tool, thoug it wouldn't surprise me...
:o)
Why don't you just install and use the ODBC driver
on
MySQL 4.0 Released
·
· Score: 2
... on your windows machine?
If all you want is a "Front End" I assume to do administration), then it doesn't have to be rocket-fast. an ODBC interface will do fine. Then you can use any windows based SQL tool (Even MS Interdev!)
Forget the slowness, how about the fact that approximatly 25% of the time I connect to Slashdot lately, I get a static site? No searching, no logging in, no ability to view comments past the first level, no looking up old stories. It is because when the MySQL DB is under too heavy a load, Slashcode is designed to do this so you won't get errors. Too bad if you were using a 'real' DB in the first place you wouldn't have to code around its lackings.
I never said it wasn't GPL. I'm just tyring to point out that a much better and more robust open source database already exists, and frankly I do't understand why people would continue to use a product so limited as MySQL (it doesnt even support sub-selects!).
In other news, PostgreSQL announced that it has all the features that MySQL 4.0 has, has had them for a long time, is GPL'd, and is very stable (as in not alpha). Get it here
OK, maybe that wasn't announced, but it should have been.

Man, send some of that stuff to me! I wish I could get some "worthless" 486's

What exactly is a "Workflow / information management system"?

Doesn't show up in Kmeleon either.
What?
They've had a B+W version for a while.. this is the first one in color i think.

Why would I wait until december when PostgreSQL has these features now?
Still no sub-selects, which IMHO is the most basic of the many things MySQL lacks.

The article clearly states thet current models output one watt, with 2 watts projected by launch.
