    Less than 20 comments and already I see three(over +1) that say, "Java does all that!".

    You may feel that java is the answer for the poster, but it doesn't meet the criteria. Even ignoring the vague, flame-provoking concepts of "intuitive and easy to use IDE" and "simplified GUI design and event handling"... Java doesn't do multiple inheritance or operator overloading.

    Perhaps you think that no project needs these... great, at least tell us why in your response, rather that spouting, "Java... Java... Java"

    Another good example, as covered in Dr. Dobbs last issue, is Mondrian. You can read a paper about it here(it's a PDF). You can download the compiler and view documentation at the mondria-script web-site.

    Here's a blurb from Dr. Dobbs:
    Mondrian is a modern, purely functional language specifically designed to leverage the possibilities of the .NET Framework.

    What I noticed was how programs developed in wxWindows "feel" like they are written with the native widgets. I guess they are... My understanding is that the libraries for various platforms (wxWindows libraries, that is) are fairly light wrappers to provide a standard interface to the native widgets.

    I also sympathize with your enjoyment on te wxWindows library. I was flabbergasted when I simply copied my wxWindows program, using wxGTK on linux to a windows box with cygwin, created a windows makefile, and viola...

    The cool thing is, this is starting to happen.

    In the Electronics Botique (mall video game shop) at my local mall (Buffalo, NY), of the wall devoted to computer software, a good 10% of it is devoted to Linux games and distros. The size of that section increases every month. A lot of Loki games, UT and Quake. It's pretty exciting.

    That's why it is called, a dream. If it was reasonable... it wouldn't be a dream. On the other hand, if companies prove that linux is a viable commercial platform, there will be a shift to using more portable libraries.. OpenGl, SDL.

    While I'll be the first to say that anyone who sits in a public library and reads porn is whacked. I don't see how it is, "an act of war". Somehow, a lonley pervert doesn't seem a threat to anyone except maybe little johnny (who's parents should be watching him anyways.)

    What are you talking about? Are you saying that Carmack want's to sell windmodems? Or that he is going to start charging for his Linux Inovations?


    Hmmm... let's look at what he's done, release quality games for Linux, released source code to some excellent games, done some great stuff for openGl. John Carmack is the man!!

    Unfortunately, those aren't solutions for me. Why... simple, opera opens near-instantaneously on my computer ( amd-450, 128Megs). Mozilla, and Netscape take hours(or so it feels like) to open and hog mucho-memory. Lynx isn't an alternative to me because I like graphics.

    I don't care if it's free, I want it ot work well, and fast.

    In my part of the US, Western New York, I can't get more that an hour from B&N. And where I live, I'm within twenty minutes of two B&N and a Borders. So it is definately more convenient for me to return something there.

    We've all seen it, Win3.1->Win95->Win98,
    Dos1->Dos? Office 95->Office 97... the bloat creaps in invariably with newer versions. Looking at the screenshots of KDE 2.0, I am a little worried. Is there a concerted effort to keep bloat to a minimum and make sure that KDE is available to those without 256Megs of RAM and PIII's?

    But I must say, KDE (and GNOME) have made linux useable for the masses(aka. my Mom and Dad). Thanks

    I guess my concern is who is going to be guying those motherboards. Are they a brand that is primarilly purchased by computer manufactureres, who are likely to use the Corel Linux CD's like everyones favorite coaster, 'the free aol CD'. Or will the CD's actually get to a consumer who will say, "hmm, a free os on this cd, let's give ita try."

    This could be really cool!

    The problem is this, How many violent/outsiders/bullies hang around with the staff and faculty enoguh for the faculty to make informed use of this program. I doubt that the boys at coulumbine hung out with guidance counselors. How could the guidance counselros then answer questions like, Does the student have acces to guns, what is their home situation, what is their mental state, etc. accurately. THEY WILL BE FORCED TO RELY ON SUPERFICIAL, EASILY OBSERVABLE THINGS.


    This really scares me. I'm just glad I'm not in high schoo anymore.

    That has to be my single-least-favorite part of KDE. No dock apps.
    Of course, I just have a bunch of Wmaker dock apps on the side
    of my screen and I tell the advanced window settings to make them
    start stikcy and never get focus. Works pretty well.


    I definately think that the panel is the weakest portion of kde (1.x) at least.
    Can you run the gnome panel and kill the kde panel? Hmmm?

    Who wan't to help me PORT LINUX TO THIS CAMERA.Ok, seriously though... while many posters are saying, who cares,
    who would want to, I'm thinking... let's see, first we get a port of a simple
    ftp program on here, and then get a cellphone that uses usb to connecto to a digital
    device(Ok, wo I'm dreaming here.) Who needs flash cards when you are
    sending all your images to your home computer.Or better yet, get the image, have the software on the camera send
    it away uncompressed, and let the desktop compress it. More time to paly
    pac-man.

    What is this insistence that everything be free(as in beer and thought)? I use Linux because it is powerful, free(in both senses) and I am anti-MS. BUT... I am willing to pay for a quality product that fills a need. Some companys are simply not set up to support an open-source business model, and some of them make an excellent product... Not every piece of comercial software is MicroTrash.

    Are you exclusively using GNU/Linux because you hate Microsoft or you covet its power, or are you exclusively using it because for more idealistic reasons? If so, Photogenics is not competition, regardless if it *was* better than Photoshop. If I want proprietary software, I'll be happy to use a proprietary operating system.

    This sort of open-source bigotry drives me crazy. "This sucks, it isn't free," seems to be a way to common attitude. How about, whoa... $99 bucks... that's peanuts compared to some other Image Manipulation suites. Add that to the $0 cost of my OS and it's a real bargain...

    I wonder if this crazy attempt to 'assasinate' the echelon system will 'bomb'. I think that people would have to include alot of words like, 'Koresh' and 'Clinton' in order to murder this system.
    I wonder if there is a 'conspiracy' behind this, like 'whitewater' or 'ruby ridge'. Do you think the 'FBI', 'NSA', or the 'IRS' is getting mad at this post. They might get mad enought to send someone with an 'Assault Rifle'after me, some sort of 'Special Ops'.
    Where is the echelon machine located, 'Oklahoma City', or 'Waco'. I wonder if they have a 'Militia' there?

    I hope this doesn't viloate the 'Constitution' or 'the bill of rights'.

    The question now is, how cheap are you going to be able to get the old iMacs for. If these are only $999-$1499, the older models should be downright cheap!
    I don't know to much about Mac's, but if the older version will run Linux... they are going to make, some great, cheap X terminals... One in the Kitchen, one in the Living room to server up MP3's, one in the bedroom as an Alarm clock... Cool!

  25. What about a plot.. on D&D Movie on The Way · · Score: 1

    D&D, and rpgs in general, don't have a set plot... So how do you make a movie out of it? Pick out parts of the world based on the rules of the game and then write the plot? Interesting..
    I think I would be more excited about a Dragonlance or Forgotten Realms movie... Those seetings have some stories and characters that I would love to see done (well) on screen.
    But how do you make a plot from the Players handbook... I guess you could use the examples from the book...

    Scene 1:
    Rothgar is pummeled by several orcs to demonstarte pummeling rules.
    Scene 2:
    Borkfast carefully dons his armor and shoulders his pack to help explain encumbrance...
    Who knows... I'll go see it as soon as it comes out... even if it's dumb as dirt.. Come on, its D&D!!!
