  1. WINE on Microsoft Discloses 14,000 Pages of Coding Secrets · · Score: 3, Interesting

Can anyone (intelligently) comment on the implications for projects like WINE? It seems that having so much information released would benefit these efforts in some manner, yes?

  2. Idiots on Intel Researchers Consider Ray-Tracing for Mobile Devices · · Score: 1

Here is the reality of the situation: with a mobile device you're probably dealing with a program written in an interpreted language (Java). If your application is a game then you're dividing your scare processing resources across all elements said game: AI, graphics, networking, whatever. It's all being done by one chip that is designed to CONSERVE BATTERY POWER. These are not the dual core race horses you see in desktops. Who wrote this article? They need failure stamped on their forehead. Maybe in 10 years... but not now. Disclaimer I work for a large, promient mobile device developer. You have heard of them.

  3. Re:You won't find anyone... on 500-fold Increase in Data Flow from SETI Telescope · · Score: 1

Weird thought here for yah but it's 4:22am so anything goes - what if they've established population control laws because they've "solved death"? If they can halt the aging process and live forever (save violent death) then they would have no need to reproduce. There could also be a matrix scenario where an artificial intelligence destroys its creators and no consciousnesses are being spawned so to speak.

  4. Maybe some violence is healthy on Violent Games 'Almost' As Dangerous as Smoking · · Score: 1

I think a certain level of aggression is alright. How many successful CEO's are complete pushovers? Luckily [most] humans have the ability to make clear and rational decisions, i doubt that this will lead to some violence pandemic. So long as people are able to keep themselves in check, which i think most level headed person should be able to do, then perhaps there is a place for violence in society?

  5. Win FS? on Microsoft Windows 7 "Wishlist" Leaked · · Score: 1

Whatever happened to WFS? It was supposed to come with Vista and was one of the much wanted features that didn't make the final cut. Granted, this sheet isn't actually a wishlist but i'm sure theres a myriad of "I want to see this in Windows 7" posts coming, thought i would join the fray

  6. Re:Not very surprising on Vista Sales Rate Fell Last Quarter · · Score: 0, Flamebait

It's healthiest growth in years? Go to finance.google.com, enter in MSFT and look at a five year trend. Now, compare this to AAPL over the same five years. Now, if your point was merely "This is only news because it's anti microsoft" then i wouldn't have commented but your post is entirely misleading. Microsoft stock is has and will continue to be stagnent. *Disclaimer* I don't use Apple OR Microsoft products

  7. Not a computer on Water Logic Gates Built at MIT · · Score: 1

The title of the article is misleading. Correct me if i'm wrong but a computer cannot be created from an AND gate and an XOR gate because neither individually or together form a universal gate. To make an actual computer he would need a [NAND gate] or [a NOR gate] or [an OR gate, AND gate and a NOT (inverter) gate]. I'm not trying to trivialize what this guys done, it's really cool, but to call it a computer is wrong.

  8. This IS an excellent idea on Global Collaborative Music Experiment · · Score: 2, Insightful

You should consider the idea that it's less about improving the quality of music or producing hits and more about breaking down cultural barriers and sharing diversity.

  9. Re:So? on ATI's 1GB Video Card · · Score: 5, Insightful
Other than high-end graphics work, what the hell will this mean?
Nothing. These cards are not meant for gaming, in fact if you did try and use it for gaming you'd be very upset. The FireGL line is a workstation card meant for things like CAD or Render farms that are very memory intensive and require a high level of precision. Its not meant for delivering a high frame rate and no gamer would stick this card in his machine
  10. Re:Why? on Google's New Calendar CL2 · · Score: 1

I don't have a cell phone, pda or laptop since I'm a poor university student. This will still be handy though, I can update my homework from my labs. Coincidently I was looking for calendar software the other day on sourceforge but nothing was at the user friendly stage.

  11. Re:Am I missing something? on Nintendo Revolution Under Wraps Past E3 · · Score: 1

When a company files a patent it has to write, in explicit detail, what it's patenting. Often this includes technical information that companies like Sony or Microsoft use and alter slightly to avoid patent infringement. Nintendo in all probability had a patent on the rumble pak but Sony decided to put it in the actual controller thus they avoided a lawsuit (well, from Nintendo at least, they were still sued for patent infringement) now every console seems to have a vibrating controller. The popular thing to do these days is wait until your product is ready to launch then immediately file for patent before your competitors know what's going on.

  12. everyone overestimate average windows users on WinOS+QEMU+Knoppix 3.8 = WinKnoppix! · · Score: 2, Insightful

Maybe I just know a lot of stupid people but if you run linux under windows, your average user won't understand that linux actually replaces windows. A lot of people just assume to see the little magic start button when they power up. Booting directly into linux helps simple folk (in regards to their technological prowess) realize that windows isn't magically built into the hardware and doesn't need to boot for the computer to run.
