    Like Michelson, Horgan thinks that because no revolution has happened in 50 years one will never happen. But it was almost 300 years between Newton and Einstein. So I'd give it another century or two before giving up.
    While I agree with your basic idea here, it is a logical fallacy to try and extrapolate a pattern from one interval.

Didn't you just say don't judge people by thier past actions yet "what historical bastion of peace... " implies that you are judging people by their ancestors action and not thier own.     What does E=MC^2 do? what monetary gain did Albert stand to gain from that? Now if Google couldn't patent thier software? We wouldn't know about them becuase Yahoo or MSN or Alta Vista would have stolen thier software and copied it as thier own and gotten all the money for someone elses work. How is that fair? How would you prevent people from benifiting from others work? So it is niether plain nor simple. IP is property and peopel have a right to protect thier property.

    How many billions of dollars could someone make from "I think therefore I am"? Why shouldn't people be able to protect their idea? Who would inovate if there was nothing in it for them? a final question, all any patent is protection of an idea, of information So you hate all protection of idea? You know one of the few ways the little guy can be protected from the big guy.

    Or maybe it's like code and sometimes it is easier to code extra crap into the program and then just activate the bits when you need it vs. starting from scratch each time. The gonads are similar they start off similar and then diferentiate( I buggered that spelling)into based on chemical signals. /bionerd off
