Who rules the US? Have a similar structure where everyone rules it (certainly not the current UN structure where its really just 4-5 countries who run it). As I stated elsewhere, each country would still have a great deal of autonomy similar to the original structure of the US but probably even more so (at least initially). A great deal of self rule is certainly required, but the main problem with tons of COMPLETELY seperate nations is every one needs its own military to protect it from the others. The main original goal of a global government would be to remove all these seperate armies and just have one global force. Part of that would require outlawing all armed militias as well and that would certainly be the biggest issue. Now you'll never stop all killing, but at least by removing massive militaries from every country you can begin to at least lessen the scale of that killing.
Step #1 in this is to outlaw any company from any arms sales to any organization besides the single global army. Of course a set of exceptions can be made so individuals can still have the right to bear arms, etc but those exceptions wouldn't include allowing RPGs and landmines for deer hunting;-) Of course some of these weapons will "fall off the back of the truck", but there will need to be VERY severe punishment at the individual and corporate level when this is found. Again won't be perfect, but should at least have a major improvment on the scale and ease of killing. All atomic sites (both military and civilian) are again controlled by the central government.
The goal would be to allow everyone to control thier own society (though there would probably be some agreed set of human rights, etc) but remove the tempation to blow the crap out of your neighbor for whatever reason.
If the criteria for not being a monopoly is simply if possible to avoid it, then there probably never has been and never will be a monopoly. Its certainly possible to avoid Windows. Heck many people could write thier own OS about as feasibly as they could move to another country.
Besides getting side tracked on a monopoly tangent, what specific part of a single world government is evil? Now obviously any such arrangement would have to be a fairly loose arangement like the US originally was (but even more so) where states (in this case countries) still hold a great deal of independence. However, the idea of a single world military certainly seems a decent goal. Any state has the right to atomic power, but the central world goverment has security and supervisory control of any such facilities. Thats just one example of how it could be a good thing in todays climate, but there are TONS of advantage it could have. The biggest hurdle to this ever happening is the rich and powerful would probably have to share that wealth and power with the poor and week. Sadly that isn't something people like to do.
What is there currently competition? Can I decide I like the Cayman Islands tax structure and social programs better so I want to partake in those instead (without moving my entire family all over the worl of course)? Goverments are already a monopoly! Your point is possibly the worst attempted analogy I've yet seen on/.
In theory we have Bluetooth, put I don't think I've ever seen a Bluetooth printer, camera, or well just about anything. However, there is certainly tons of USB stuff (just about everything seems to ship with USB support). Plus you can use the stuff you already have instead of dropping cash to go buy a bunch of new stuff that supports Bluetooth (even if it existed). Just plug the dongle in you PC, plug your existing devices into the hub, and away you go.
What makes the goal of one world government evil? In todays envirmonment it may be about impossible to bring about, but the end result of a unified single world governement is probably the best chance of world peace our messed up specices has.
Say you have a PC under your desk. Instead of having a USB cable to the printer, a USB cable to an external HD, a USB cable to etc. You just have a simple USB dongle on you PC which then wireless commnunicates with all your USB devices. Less wires!
you can also use the built in backup utility in XP on a hard disk without much of a problem
Just thought I'd point out (because I'm not a fan of the XP built in bacup utils) that Vista sounds like it will have some much improved backup/restore utilities by default.
Alaskins... PLEASE tell me you are doing something about this guy.
Saddly I doubt they will because they enjoy all the pork he has been able to send thier way (hope I'm wrong). What I think we need is some system in the Senate and House where if enough signitures are collected around the country there would be some sort of impeachment of a congressman. It would obviously have to be some crazy high number so it wasn't abused by bigger states picking on little states, but there should be some way to protect the country from twits like this. And then if you have a congressman impeached thier seat must remain empty until the next scheduled election as a punishment to the people in that state for voiting in such an ass-clown in the first place.
I'd read this (on CNN I think) a while ago and the real reasons one of his staffers gave was 1) he wanted more details on how it would actually work and 2) he was worried about the cost-benefit of the program.
OK so #1 does make some sense because can you imagine how clogged up the tubes could get with all that pork. #2 however, come on! This is the same guy who threw a hissy fit when people complained about his $223 million "Bridge to nowhere" to an island with 50 people. Whats the cost-benefit on that!?!?!
I've seen a number of comments about Nintendo being #2 world-wide recently but haven't seen any numbers to support this. The only recent numbers I've seen (like this) have xbox #2 on world wide rankings. Am I just missing a better source for numbers or is the whole Nintendo is #2 thing one of those internet spread myths?
I'm not sure laughing or crying is better. I mean is there any support for anything remotely like this prediction? I've just spent a few minutes googleing for server market share numbers, looking at NetCraft, etc and I could only find one site which even mentions Apple in the discussion of server market share and that was the MacObserver site from 2002. I assume on the rest of the market share breakdowns I saw Apple was included in the "Other" category.
Does anyone know of any half way reliable numbers on this?
If you company has at least 5 people you can check out some licensing options besides paying retail. If your smaller than that, your best bet is to try to chat up some local PC builder who gets OEM pricing. Anyway, I haven't seen any Vita pricing besides whats in TFA yet, but through these other non-retail channels your 50% request should certainly be at least in the ball-park.
Tom, come now. First, the ultimate pricing is $399/$259 (full/upgrade) USD. And can you point to an example where a MS product has been not "fully" working because it is running on a "lower" version? I cannot think of any off the top of my head at least. I have Office professional at work (XP Pro) and at home (XP Home) and I get the exact same functionality. Same with my games, development tools, etc, etc. Now I cannot say for sure there has never been such a case, but as I cannot think of any I'd be very interested to hear any examples.
There are certainly some applications which require a certain version (Media Center, IIS, etc, etc) but I cannot think of a single example where a MS application supported by both Home and Pro versions have ever had the Home version crippled in some way. I may well be wrong and would be interested to hear examples if I am.
I would like to hear more on what Zune will be connecting to for media.
Given the fact MS and MTV teamed up on the Surge music store (actually pretty nice) and Surge is the default setting on the upcoming Media Player 11, I think its pretty safe the Surge will be the default media source for the Zune. Of course any source which plugs into Media Player will be an option if you prefer one of them (Napster, etc). Of course iTunes won't work I'm sure as using MS DRM is one of the requirements for that integration.
My understanding from reading TFA is that the footage that Josh shot was of G8 protestors lighting a police car on fire.
Slight correction, the feds are arguing the footable MIGHT show G8 protesters lighting the car. Josh says there is no such thing on his video. So the federal judge ruled its a federal case, because federal agents speculate that its possible it may show something which if streched as far as possible could be seen as a federal case even though those who have seen the video say it shows no such thing. That seems a VERY low threshold for over-riding the states jurisdiction.
Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't the wisdom of the ages dictate that first you find a need and then deliver a solution?
It depends on your goal. If your sole goal is to make money, they you are correct. As far as general scientific and technological advancement you are REALLY wrong.
The only thing the free version cannot do is play on-line games against others. Live arcade, along with evertyhing else is available with the free version.
company does anything it can to stop this kind of progress in the IT field, even though their previous boss apparently knows very well what the consequence of that is....
Until the consequence of lack of innovation in the IT field is millions of deaths I think you trivializing HIV/AIDS to try to make a point.
FTA:Symantec researchers put the networking technology in Vista under a magnifying glass to determine its exposure to external attacks. The team said it found several flaws in build 5270 of Vista and even more in earlier test versions. However, these were all fixed by Microsoft in build 5384, the version of the operating system that was publicly released in May as Beta 2.
For those too lazy to read the article all it really says is. We found a few issues in early releases of Vista. They've already all been fixed by Beta 2, but we are guessing there are probably more.
what are the odds that they share this information with other Search Engine companies?
Probably about the same odds as Google sending Yahoo and MSN detailed specs of thier search algorithums or the 2008 Republican presidential candidate going out and campaigning for the Democratic candidate or the US shipping Iran a fully functional atomic weapon production facility..... I could go on, but you probably get the idea. Sometimes competitors want to beat thier opponents you see.
Agreed this may lead to better gameplay. IMO I just don't see what the game will be doing as any type of "innovation" since every game which has ever been updated or ported to any device with a slightly different controller has done the same thing (remap which input signals trigger which events). If we want to use the word "innovation" here, I think we save if for Nintendo for creating the new controller not for EA doing what basically every game before has already done.

Although I wouldn't put it past Bush to try changing that law, or to simply ignore it and run again anyway.
Ignore seems much more likely. Whats one more siging letter stating that he chooses to ignore one more law?
