  1. Lukewarm Response? on Only NFL Game This Year Gets Lukewarm Response · · Score: 1

I'm a bit befuddled as to why the story submitter considers Madden 2006's response to be "lukewarm".

Firstly, as mentioned by other posters, the rankings he linked to were for the PC version, the PS2 version got an 88% rating and the Xbox version an 87% rating, both respectable scores and hardly 'mediocre' (I would also argue that 79% is quite respectable).

I also am unsure of why the submitter is referring to Madden 2006 Xbox/PS2/PC as a "next-generation title"...

And as to the "what are players to do?" comment, it appears that they are running out in droves to buy this game. After all, they did sell 1.7 million copies in the first week alone...

Before having a universal driver in a BIOS on an add-in card would be useful, you would need specifications for interfacing with said universal driver so it could be used by the various OSes you mention.

Developing some sort of 'common driver api' can happen regardless of if the actual driver code lies on a BIOS or is loaded from an HD and give mostly the same results (you would just have to load the driver from a disk or the net).

I share your experience with recent Sony products. My VAIO R505 has had numerous issues (LCD latch has broken 2 times for no apparant reason, docking station has had issues, and the battery has problems and is costly to replace).

I also have a dead PS2 (my newer PS2 works perfectly though, seems they fixed the DRE problems) and it seems any discman I've bought int the past few years has died in 6 months.

Interestingly, I had a discman from early-mid 90's that lasted a good 6 years as well as a bookshelf stereo system from '94 that still runs great. I also have a Sony Trinitron-FD monitor that is 3 years old and runs perfectly.

Interestingly, Sony gives 3 year warranties on their monitors (compared to much shorter warranties on the products mentioned above) - so if you are looking at any Sony products check the warranty. If they only expect it to last 90 days you probably shouldn't expect it to last much longer...

  9. Re:Real time is a hard problem on Linux Cluster For Processing DSP Effects? · · Score: 2

Yes, I was going to post something along these lines myself.

Your main problem is going to be latency. Even a few milliseconds of latency is glaringly noticeable when working with audio. Many of the effects that you are wanting to use even use delays by this small amount to achieve their goals (phasing using around 3 ms, and flanging a little bit longer delays, chorusing slightly longer, etc.).

The second issue I was going to bring up is why use a cluster of CPU's at all? You do realize there are _MANY_ DSP PCI boards available that can handle the tasks you want. They aren't cheap, but neither is a cluster...

Creamware, Korg, and Digidesign all make boards that perform the tasks your talking about with several DSP's on a board. Going with a Pro Tools system from Digidesign allows you to add more boards as your processing needs increase.

Going with a computer cluster is the wrong way, if you need DSP's, by god use DSP's!

For most data it will just mean the enduser is downloading quickly for a shorter timespan, instead of downloading slowly for a much longer timespan. Also, shouldn't a TCP/IP stack be able to distribute the bandwidth over available connections? I mean, its not like someone with a 100mbps connection is going to be the only person able to access a server with 100mpbs bandwidth, it will just be slower when the next person comes along. Of course this doesn't address DoS attacks, but the ISP could simply put a cap on the maximum upload speed that an enduser could send at or something similar to this.

It's simple, you couldn't unless you had some kind of powerful government or other force to over see the economy and make sure it was balanced. And a government such as that would have to be very powerful to function properly, and well as I think it's been pointed out in this thread government officials aren't always looking out for the good of the people, seems most of the time they're looking out for themselves.
