wouldn't that cost more to the customer (the company wishing to advertise) in the long run anyway?
Traditionally no. Most magazines have different rates for different size ads. Full page ad is expensive but not as expensive as 2 half-page ads. Or 4 Quarter page ads. Some magazines only have full-page. Google works a low-rate deal buying 2 Full pages a month for 24 months in a couple of mags. Google can charge higher rates than mag for 1/4 page ad that may or may not be available through the magazine. Customer may even end up with lower rate than magazine can offer and google still makes a buck.

Is everything on Slashdot lately just the stuff that was on Reuters in the morning? I read this hours ago. Yar! I've half a mind to demand that stories copied from big news sites not be accepted, as they are already obvious at other news outlets.
No, but some of it is, at least if it was tech related. SlashDot has no Reporters. It is a discussion board surrounding NerdNews culled from news organizations from around the web.
What was the discussion like at Rueters? Thankfully we have your contribution of thoughts on the matter "You Read this Story." Yes, yes, very insightful.

.. the SciFi Channell. Seriously why would any studio give this guy the reigns to 20 million dollars is way beyond me. I have not seen the non-Game movies but they all look straight to video to me. Michael Pare, hasn't made a good movie since the first Eddie & the Cruisers (Shame Really.)
Past Performance is no indication of future success. But if Past Performances are all FLOPS, this is some indication of the likleyhood of future FLOPS.

Pixma 1500, 1600 and no drivers. Boss loves the emachines. But I'm getting quite the pile of pixma printers.
which are only availbe from the japanese website. They also have drivers for most of the other pixmas too.
I've been there, couldn't see these models.
Anyone else?
Last couple of paragraphs of the artcle says it all, Some Get it, Some Don't.
. To that end, Hollywood thinks that the time has come to bring down the curtain on film piracy. "I always thought that piracy connotes something glamorous," Mr. Meyer said. "Let's call it what it is: theft. I think it's just like shoplifting."
Except if I leave the store with a banana the store is without 1 banana. If I lift a DVD from blockbuster I could see your point, you could call that theft.
Digital Duplication in and of itself is not theft. It can be Copyright Infringement, but it can also be Fair Use.
I love Peter Jackson for his work on LOTR. I might even like this King Kong (despite Jack Black).
But, More importantly, I love him for having the balls to say this. "I don't believe piracy can be easily beaten; fighting fire with fire by releasing movies on DVD at the same time as cinemas is probably where the industry is heading in the next few years," said Mr. Jackson, the director. "Electronic delivery directly into both cinemas and people's homes will not necessarily beat pirates, but it will mean studios are at least on a similar playing field."
Here,Here. I've said it before. http://slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=160059&thresho ld=1&commentsort=0&tid=97&mode=thread&cid=13398179
And I say it again. That makes two movers & shakers movin & shaking in our direction. We always complained during the napster days the reason was there was no other legal way. Some people in hollywood heard us. Now there are a hundred ways to get your music electronically.
Films should be the same, If you offer me the choice of a DVD, Theatre and Streaming, (fsck PPV/MOD) I might buy 2. If you only offer Theatre, I probably won't buy until the DVD hits the bargain bin, if I remember and I wanted to see it.
Personally I'd love to see it on my home theatre first & if I liked it, take the gang (Friends/Family) to the theatre. Simultaneous Distribution will save the industry. DVD is the product. Charge more for DVD (has to contain more than just the film.) Next in cost is tickets and then streaming as lowest, no frills, no extras.
Most Piracy I have encountered, stems from the backlash at having to waste gobs of money on terribly unfunny/unoriginal/boring cinema. If it has been downloaded, and it sucks, it can be easily deleted without the expense one incurs by walking out of Batman and Robin 10 minutes in. But if it is a good movie, say like Batman Begins, it might warrant a trip to the local cinema. Some movies require the bigscreen. King Kong probably will.
Consumers may be sheep, but even sheep can be pushed too far and become dangerous to the handler.
Dangerous Sheep, Just what part of the sheep are you handling there, son?
So how exactly is the city supposed to rebuild itslef higher?
How about move a few miles in any direction that leads above sea level?
Cities don't rebuild themselves, cities have to be rebuilt at great expense and manpower. Rebuild this one somewhere else above sea level. Wow, was I that unclear?
Raise a few hundred square miles by 20 feet? Right. Another expense I don't want to pay for.
Tough. You probably didn't want to help me out last year when FEMA did either. Shall we all inhabit the very small portion of the country not affected by Flood, Hurricane, Tornado, Earthquake, LandSlide, Avalanche, WildFire, etc...? Of course not. I don't want to pay taxes either but we all do pal. At least this money will go to help victims of this TRAGEDY rather than support causing one overseas. We should, however, have a healthy debate about whether it is wise to reinvest in the same swamp-to-be-flooded again or relocate the city somewhere comparatively safer. You know my vote. 9Weeks from now we could have refugee city just outside of town or just begin clearing rotted debris. I pick NEWER ORLEANS, "Now above SeaLevel"
Damn, I've never been to Bourbon Street. Never been to Mardi Gras. Never had NAWLENS Gumbo. The tragedy just keeps growing.
I don't know if I'd trust a wiki to make purchasing decisions
Hmm, On this Wiki, If it works, it will work. If it doesn't work, it MIGHT not work.
This Wiki (Not WIKIPEDIA) is visited often usually ONLY by many experienced cedega users, You could go ahead and trust the Official Transgaming Games database, but many working games are not listed, almost all non-working games aren't. They are trying to sell subscriptions, why would they advertise how many games don't work?
Or you could just Buy & Try. Kinda sucks to blow 54 bucks on a game to use as a coaster thought.
I get this impression from having looked at the printer compatibility wiki. I still don't know what printers (if any) are good for Linux. Well I know the $5000 PostScript laser printers that speak TCP/IP are, but that is too expensive.
(One Wiki) != (All Wiki).
I feel your pain with the printers. OfficeJet kinda works. Cannon BJ's work. Pixma's no luck. LaserJets most work. Good Luck.
I support TransGaming with a subscription, almost against my better judgement, because I believe those $5 monthly reciepts show a viable market to the developers. It shows that I use Linux AND buy my software. I also purchase every Linux Game I can find even if its an old LOKI game collecting dust on the shelf. These sales, if made in sufficient quantities, will convince them to port more. NATIVE UT2K4, Awesome under Linux. Have not bought Doom3 yet. Waiting on Quake4.
I wish there were no need for Cedega. But until there isn't, I'll use it.
Construction should be under way on Newer Orleans.
I live on the east coast of Florida. We lost our house in the first one last year, while we were in it, a quarter of the roof went for a sightseeing tour of cental Florida.
I know if there was a strong likelyhood of flooding, I would move away. I chose my new house based on the flooding I have seen in this town over the last 10 yrs. I obviously wouldn't move to the low lying areas.
Here was my rational for not moving away from here before and after.
The Odds of your particular town being in the path of a hurricane are pretty high against.
Th Odds of said hurricane damaging your property are still pretty high.
The Odds of said damage to be catastrophic are even higher.
The Odds of it happening twice are astronomical.
Just to prove my point the second Hurricane (2weeks later) did no damage to my temporary housing (a 20 yr old Trailer with a lean to extension) despite destroying several others on my street.
Having said all that, my property wasn't (and Isn't) below sea level. The community rebuilt. It was a mother bitch for a few months. People lost homes, work, family members. FEMA was on the job, for the most part. But again, our water washed back out or to lower ground. Hard to deliver supplies underwater. We are just now seeing the roof repairs being completed. (Where I work contractor says 2 more weeks don't they always)
So my recommendation: All effort be to rebuild immediately HIGHER.
I know, we need the ports. COMMUTE.
I know, the cajuns. hmmm...... FEMA bought trailers for FL. Houseboats for N.O.
This situation sucks all the way round, I gauruntee dat.
To all calling for a temporary ban of jokes, I must remind you, we humans use humor to cope. I have a deep understanding of the pain a hurricane can cause, however, I can, nay NEED to find something to break the sadness and tension occasionally. Hell, you should have heard some of the jokes we were telling during our aftermath. 'insert random Skylight joke here'
Their losses are not funny. They are not at fault for where they where born. I just wish I had a good joke that wasn't tasteless to put here to prove my point.
Exactly what would you recommend as an alternative? Not prosecuting criminals because their associates might fill the void with something worse?
How about busting the DOCTOR illegally writing the script and charging the Spammer with some spam crime. Oh, that's right there is no F'N Spam Laws to charge him with. Wire Fraud is not the same.
Seriously, cry me a river. Anyone who turns to crack and/or meth because their internet doctor isn't online anymore is going to have a hard time getting my pity. Maybe they can do us all a favor and move up to cyanide.
Dude, take it down a notch. It's an f'n pain reliever. I was being sarcastic. How about we just agree you are a heartless dick. These people are buying medication through the mail cuz it's CHEAPER, not because they can't get a script. Do you ever read the spam this asshole sends. He offers Medication at low prices without having to pay a doctor visit. You dig. Preying on the injured or small dicked.
Love to. Don't argue in favor of the opposing side and we won't have a problem. Otherwise, you're counted in. And you're the enemy.
I fail to see how I argued in favor of the opposing side. I argue that this is akin to busting Al Capone for not paying taxes instead of Murder.
Oh no, I have an anonymous coward as an enemy. He could be anybody. Must... go... underground......
You seem to be having a hard time differentiating between "public" servers and "unclassified" servers.
No I'm pointing out that the article makes no clear indication of the nature of the content "Accessed" or the roles the machines assumed or the method of attack.
Insinuating this is an attempt to "Classify" all these networks is idiotic.
Idiotic? I only caution that the military does not say "We were attacked," without thinking it through. Some action will come of this announcement, maybe it won't be more Classified PC's, maybe its just moving "some" information to a more secure location. This is surely ammo to implement whatever is going to be asked for congress to approve.
FYI, they're dictionary attacks on SSH ports, and buffer overflow exploits on a variety of other common ports, like 80. This isn't people "looking up information", they're trying to break in.
I can ONLY guess, that the "Attacks" are similar to the "attacks" you and I, and the rest of the Server Admins of the world have had to deal with. In which case, quit your whining and secure your network, just like we have to do.
The numbers are telling. FTA: The number of attempted intrusions from all sources identified by the Pentagon last year totaled about 79,000, defense officials said, up from about 54,000 in 2003. Of those, hackers succeeded in gaining access to a Defense Department computer in about 1,300 cases.
No mention of percentage of these were Chinese Website(?)based attacks. Know Why?
It wouldn't be easily perceived as a significant threat to National Security. Just like its not a significant threat to our Commerce Security at my job or yours.
This all reads 1 of 2 ways.
1. Our Government is Incompetent/UnderStaffed in the Network Admin and IT area.
2. The Chinese are the next USSR. This is the latest in a series of Anti-China Statements from low-level government officials.
Pick one or Both.
Maybe I'm cynical, but, it hardly seems appropriate for Attempted (or even Successful) Server Hack to be News. But here it is at the Washington post.
Favorite line. FTA "Even seemingly innocuous information, when pulled together from various sources, can yield useful intelligence to an adversary."
Do you know how much research it takes to find people who can work 20hrs a day for next to nothing in the U.S.? Sure anybody could do it in India or China, but in California.
Not to mention the numerous meetings to discuss this years catchphrase and logo changes. "EA Sports...It's in the Game." that's 5 million right there.
Then there was all the crack they had to buy for the NFL to give EA the exclusive deal. Plus 64 Research assistants had to scour 32 Cities to find the best priced DrugDealers. Very impressive PowerPoint Presentations that should be linked with Google Maps for the rest of us.
So please before you go banging up on them, remember they have problems too, just like you and me.
I should clarify that some of my favorite games were published by this Soulless Corp. (Undying, AM's Alice, NHL 98, Madden 2001, 2 out of 3 LOTR Movie games)
From TFA: In May, a federal judge shut down Xpress Pharmacy and appointed a receiver to take control of the business' assets. Federal authorities seized $1.8 million in luxury cars, two homes and $1.3 million in cash.
Figures, they had to wait till it was profitable.
Now what are all those HydroCodine Junkies gonna do? Head straight to Crack and Crystal Meth. Ahhh, Justice.
The indictment contains various counts of conspiracy to dispense controlled substances, wire fraud, money laundering, distributing controlled substances and introducing misbranded drugs into interstate commerce.
I'm all for prison-raping the spammers, but if they don't charge him with any spam offenses, then we're all jumping on the War on Drugs Bandwagon. Count me out.
Make it a crime to repeatedly use my computer equipment for unsolicited Advertisements. Fine them at an advertiser rates. 5 cents a email. Charge him with this crime & let the bunkmates line up.
The doctor faces what charges?
The U.S. Attorney's Office said Mach was represented by Bruce Levy of New Jersey. A call to his office was not immediately returned Wednesday.
TFA doesn't say this is "publicly available information," just that these networks are are unclassified. Just because this stuff isn't Top Secret doesn't mean we should ship off all the Pentagon's backup tapes to China with a red bow on top.
How exactly do you steal backup tapes from a website? Who the hell leaves completed backup tapes in the machine? Empty ones, Sure. (Overnight unattended backups are just asking for trouble, especially in the Military)
Agreed TFA says a whole lot of nothing. I've written DOD, asking the nature of intrusion & content of compromised data. Holding my breath now.
From TFA:With billions of dollars at stake, nerves are growing understandably frayed. Last week, John Fithian, the president of the National Association of Theatre Owners, accused Robert A. Iger , the incoming chief executive of Walt Disney, of leveling a "death threat" at theater owners for having suggested that the lesson to be drawn from the slump is that moviegoers want films to be accessible in theaters and on DVD simultaneously.
Here,Here.. Did I just agree with a Disney exec? I would only add ONLINE Distribution as well. I want the choice on day one. Go home for 20bucks & watch it from the couch or Go out with the wife on a date. Theatre goes will go, some will buy the DVD right after watching the movie. DVD buyers will buy it, some will go to watch it on the big screen. (StarWars, FireFly, Batman etc...)
We like take out, but we also like to sit down every once in a while. If you make the choice come down to: spend $20 bucks on an unknown or spend $9 buck on unknown, I might end up spending $29 by the end. Its a "good thing" for us and them.
I hope the theater owners are scared, Spend some time trying to come up with a valid reason why I ought to shell out 30-50 bucks to watch Julie Roberts cry 5ft tears with commercials.
Piracy would all but die if DVD's of NewReleases were out at the same time. I know I wouldn't waste my time and Bandwidth on a Cam version of a film I could purchase now. ( I already came to this conclusion around the time theHulk was leaked.) We spend a total of 20 bucks a paycheck on DVDs (usually used or under $10), 5 of us in the house. We've seen exactly 5 movies in the theatre since Farenheight 911. One person at each.
Hmm, So they recieve hits on UNClassified Computers (Servers?). Is it possible someone in china just wants to know about corn production and distribution to soldiers?
Nowhere does TFA describe the attacks themselves. I guess we are to assume they are malicious Attacks to gain control of DOD computers. I try to never assume anything based on vague DOD statements. So I'm going with hits on the serveer Logs. Seems like a cute way to get approval for Classifying these UNClassified Systems. This administration has been overly secretive in a whole slew of areas, add one more to the list.
I give it a week, then quietly changes will be made and this info will dissappear off the web, innaccessible to all but the DOD.
Wouldn't it be interesting to know how many "Attacks" the chinese government receives from the US.
The number of attempted intrusions from all sources identified by the Pentagon last year totaled about 79,000, defense officials said, up from about 54,000 in 2003. Of those, hackers succeeded in gaining access to a Defense Department computer in about 1,300 cases. The vast majority of these instances involved what VanPutte called "low risk" computers.
Gained access, Shit man, Raise Terror Threat Level to chartruse.
This is an ongoing, organized attempt to siphon off information from our unclassified systems."
No kidding, People are using computers to gather publicly available information. Oh.. My.. God.. Raise to level Periwinkle.....Get Dick to an undisclosed location. Get Condi on the horn.
Either you are with us or your with the Chinese Websites.
Wouldn't a better solution be to limit the amount of time per day everyone can play?
Follow me here. Online Gaming is always reduced to the guys who spend 18hrs a day sniping at newbs. Pick any game, its always reduced the same, if you didn't buy it in the first 6mos, by the time you get in you are a serf to a hundred jobless LVL32 (insert Superior Class here). To give everyone a fair shot, maybe developers should limit online time to say 6 "in world" hours a day, Extend other (Under-utilized at present) areas of gaming for the interested. Character development and customization, Economic commerce decisions, etc.. all that stuff that drags us out of the immersive feel of the game. Instead of layering "windows" and text on-top of the 3d world, move it all out of the world. Library, Hospital, Commerce, School, Chat & Socializitation, Story & Quest Info. All these would benefit from being free of 3d paradigm (except Combat school).
Seems like it would go a long way to extend the funlife of the game. The truly addicted will all be off by 6am. Take a lot of work to pull it off well.
Any Takers? SourceForge is waiting.... Think about it, we already have a captive chinese audience, what is that 1..2.. billion?.
As a parent I wouldn't mind seeing a max hrs listed on the box. As a player, hmmm the extra stuff would have to be done very well, you know with Professional Writers and Artists. What? It could happen.
26yr Olds, No PC in the bedroom. I have to lock the PC's up until chores and....
Damn, That should read: 2 16yr olds. Locking away a 26yr olds computer, that's not right./KMeany
In addition, I think this PEN thing is being applied to the wrong market. Seems more suited to an engineering/FootBall-Basketball Coach/Graphic Artist market. Thats a big market, Football Engineer Artists, two moved in next door to me. As an Input device I'm with ya. But as a toy or learning device, not so much.
"I'm a Sys Admin, I have 4 computers in my home, my child won't have his or her own computer until Highschool at best. Learning tool my ass, the only they help you learn is how to download music and pr0n."
As a sysAdmin, I know you have a dim view of users, but think of it in the terms Why not instead sit down with them and HELP them learn. to be responsible, educated users. There are responsible places your kids can download music. Open frank discussions about pornography and your ability to see every packet & who requested it are enough to curb the porn.
But more importantly, The computer with the correct software can for example, repeat spanish verbs, forever, without getting frustrated at your child. It also has the instant access (that you enjoy) to a vast collection of information, that takes experience to learn how to sift for what you want. Your children will be at a disadvantage to mine, when book reports, science fair, history homework, term papers are due.
I'm not going to lie, It takes a fair amount of police work, nothing you aren't already used to. 2 26yr Olds, No PC in the bedroom. I have to lock the PC's up until chores and homework are done. Check the Router occasionally, Bring ANY unwanted activity to their attention. If they know they are watched they are much better behaved.
I agree, unfettered access can be damaging. However the benefits far outweigh the negatives. If you wait until High School, you won't be able to "teach" them anything. The two boys didn't have PC's until maybe 10 or 12. My 8 yr old, learned to read, spell, do arithmetic and Art, all before PreSchool. It never occurs to her to go anywhere I would find questionable, Except those damn Scientolgist NeoPets (like KidCrack). She is in her 3rd yr of Gifted Student Program. She is very intelligent, but more importantly she knows how to find answers when she needs them. As a side effect she loves to READ, never was a chore, just came naturally to her because of so many hour of Reader Rabbit, Sam and MAX, Math Journey. She also loves the outdoors and sports and (shudder) Video Games.
The Computer is a teaching tool, just like textbooks, chalkboards, construction paper. How you use them determines their effectiveness.
You "can" draw pornography on the blackboard, but most kids are taught to behave in class. My kids were taught how to behave in the Virtual World as well.

Baaaaad Rancher.
I don't know if I'd trust a wiki to make purchasing decisions Hmm, On this Wiki, If it works, it will work.
(One Wiki) != (All Wiki).
I feel your pain with the printers. OfficeJet kinda works. Cannon BJ's work. Pixma's no luck. LaserJets most work. Good Luck.
Cedega is a mixed bag. Some of my Favorites play great. HalfLife 1 & 2. StarWars Jedi Academy and JK1&2, WoW, GuildWars.
Some of my favorites Don't Play at all. Prince Of Persia, HULK, Legacy of Kain:DEFIANCE...HALO
Always check the wiki before purchasing. http://digital-conquest.ath.cx/wiki/index.php/Main _Page
Good Luck to you all.
We Get it, We just can't find it.
FTA "Even seemingly innocuous information, when pulled together from various sources, can yield useful intelligence to an adversary. "
I was scared shitless until I realized I have no Laptops and only use AMD.
In May, a federal judge shut down Xpress Pharmacy and appointed a receiver to take control of the business' assets.
Oh.
Did Matthew Broderick teach us nothing?
Damn, That should read: 2 16yr olds. /KMeany
Locking away a 26yr olds computer, that's not right.
What dooes AMD have to do, Payola?
As MIS, looking to repopulate our server farm, I would be proud to secretely support such a "Marketing Strategy".
Hey it worked for SONY.
